Cynth Leeyung, daughter of prominent human politician Lord Leon Leeyung, overheard a meeting of her father's in which the mythical patria sources were discussed. Struck with inspiration and hoping to prove her worth to her family and the rest of the humans, she decided to hunt for them. Meanwhile, small-town human-passing hibri Will Fen quite literally stumbled into Lusan Croft, an alleged member of prominent rebel group the Voc, who convinced her to leave her town and become a spy. Together, they journeyed to New Earth, where Will first put on the false identity of a human. They attended a gala being hosted by Cynth's family, and had an argument in which Lusan professed his love to Will and Will laughed at him.

Following that debacle, Will followed Cynth — who had spent the time being introduced to Ryatt Chess, one of her father's governmental advisors — to Leon's office, where she found and scanned important papers regarding Tercy Cess, a prominent rana political figure who was believed to be connected to the sources. Cynth quickly caught Will, who hurriedly convinced her to include her on her quest. Satisfied with a job well done, Will retreated back to the gala and had a few too many drinks. She then fell down the stairs. Luckily, gorgeous stunning human Cybele Valloma helped her back to her hotel, and Will used this time to invite Cybele to join her and Cynth as they searched for the sources.

The next day, Cybele, who was revealed to be a patria-sympathizer, showed up at their meeting and inserted herself into the mission as well. After a further planning session at Cynth's house, the three met early in the morning at a monorail station — but on the way, Will was stopped by Dalia Ora, who had been sent from the Voc to collect Will and take her back home. Will ran away from Dalia, inadvertently chasing her straight to the monorail station, where Cynth shot and killed her. This greatly rattled both Will and Cybele. After interrogating ranae at the nearest town, the group entered a pub to interrogate an all-knowing rana named Zair. Although he gave them clues to Tercy Cess's grave, Zair also challenged Cynth, and she responded by killing him and stunning many others. The group headed for Tercy's grave, where they found a map to the rana source but also encountered a whole new group of potential enemies.

At the same time, Aidyn Munsif, runaway hibri and established member of the Voc, broke into a human governor's house with his best friend Damon Nakoa and stole a map and a lullaby. Having separated to search the house, Aidyn went downstairs to find human policemen talking about killing Damon. He killed two of the three policemen, took the papers and ran. After being told that the Voc would not be searching for the sources, Aidyn ran off alone to do it himself. With no way to read the human-language map, he got lost and wound up in a remote faber village, home to faber-rana hibri Kei Arawn and caela Ari Librarsi. After Kei agreed to help Aidyn with map-reading and dragged Ari along, the three of them journeyed on towards the grave of Tercy Cess. The trio stopped for supplies, Ari got arrested and subsequently let out and Kei temporarily lost a foot. They collected Jared Jogle as their second snake boy from the village too. While leaving the village, the four of them encountered Cynth's father Leon's human advisors: a group they didn't recognize, who chased them through the forest.

Having escaped the advisors, the jammers continued travelling and found Aidyn's old village. Aidyn left the others in the forest and went to tell Damon's mother her son was dead, except then he found out Damon was alive and waiting for him at the Almoons Festival with the Voc. With that new knowledge and some money from Mrs. Nakoa, the jammers found themselves following in the squadders' path and discovered Zair's mourning village. They compared what a rana remembered of Cynth's map with Aidyn's, and pinpointed their destination: Tercy's grave, and then the festival. They made their way to the grave, but found a group already there...

Cynth immediately began shooting at the jammers, and Aidyn responded by attempting to close-range fight her. Kei was hit by an orange shot. Before Aidyn had a chance to get to Cynth and take revenge, he was stopped by Cybele, who warned him not to get close to her because she was merciless. Aidyn and Cybele both distantly recognized one another, but neither had time to dwell on it: Aidyn ignored Cybele's advice and began to fight with Cynth for Tercy's map. During the fight, the map was ripped in two — one of the pieces going directly to Cynth, and the other being passed to Will, who was then chased by Jared. Jared knocked Will out with a rock, took the map and slithered away, leaving Will unconscious. Cybele, who had followed the two in order to ensure Will's safety, at this point discovered Will's gills and realized that she was in fact a hibri in disguise. She also spotted what appeared to be a maxi through the trees.

Meanwhile, just when Cynth was about to defeat Aidyn, her father's advisors appeared and a handful chased her through the trees. She convinced Ryatt Chess not to take her back home, and he convinced the others. At the same time, the remaining advisors attacked the jammers, but they were saved by Calix Solis, the maxi Cybele spotted earlier. Jared, immediately infatuated, convinced Calix to join their group.

Cynth returned to find Will both unconscious and concussed and Cybele aiding her, not a map to be seen. Annoyed, she led them to a hotel room, where she began comparing the part of the source she'd recovered with a modern map of Altiu. She discovered that Tercy had hidden the rana source in an area that was now the caela Monsum City, which also happened to be where the Almoons Festival was being held that year. Alarmed, Will realized if she was going to stop Cynth and the humans from getting the source, she needed to do it fast. They headed to another monorail station to get to Monsum City, and Cybele let slip a comment that made Will realize she knew her secret. On the monorail, Will confronted her in the next compartment, but when she realized Cynth was watching both of them, Cybele kissed Will for cover. There was no time for them to discuss what had happened before arriving at the Almoons Festival.

With Calix in tow, the jammers moved off further into the forest to regroup and examine the map. They also examined the grave after the gun-toting humans moved off and confirmed that the Almoons Festival was where they needed to go. While exploring in the forest (he got lost), Jared found Ryatt's spilled chess pieces lying in the ground and confirmed them all to be horses. When a lightning storm forced the jammers to move or get struck, they relocated to a different section of the forest. To kill time, Jared began to tell scary stories, but was rudely interrupted by the arrival of Voc members Dealla Sabrine and Nori Salys. The jammers followed the two back to the traveling Voc camp, where Aidyn finally reunited with Damon. After spending the night at the camp, the jammers, along with Damon, Voc member Lyla Amaranth, Dealla, and Nori, headed out to the Almoons Festival to finally search for the sources.

Immediately after entering Monsum City, Will's rana magic strengthened monumentally due to exposure to the rana source. She also spotted a wanted poster for Cynth and her two companions, over the killing of Zair and others in the rana village. The squadders spent the night outside the festival and woke up early to hunt for the source. As they searched, Will considered different ways to defeat Cynth, but ultimately did not act. They arrived at a small pond where Will sensed the source, and Cynth sent Will underwater to check. She saw a treasure chest containing the source and tried to let it stay there, but it latched onto her and she wasn't able to hide it. The source was revealed to be a pearl, and immediately entered Cynth's clutches.

The same morning, the jammers and tag-along Voc members sat down to formulate a plan, eventually splitting off into pairs to search the city as Dealla, Nori, and Lyla went back to the Voc. Calix and Jared wandered through the festival, where Jared bought a bunch of rat jerky and Calix ran into members of his old tribe. After a tense discussion with his former sparring partner, Merrick, it was revealed that Calix's death had been faked by his older sister for reasons unknown. Meanwhile, Dealla, Nori, Lyla, their Voc faction leader Ryne, and an unnamed faber went out to search for the source with the new information that it was within the festival. With Nori's rana guidance, they came across the same pond-area that Cynth was in, with the newly acquired source.

The Voc members and Cynth began to fight, and Cynth threw the source over to Cybele to keep safe. Will, drained from her fight with the source, was close-to-unconscious on the floor, and a Voc member handcuffed her. Cynth disarmed three of the Voc members as they tried to take the source from Cybele, but was ultimately overpowered by Ryne and the faber, who created a series of complex illusions with faber magic. These illusions also prevented Cybele from saving Will as she had hoped, and instead she ran with the source. Ryne used her maxi gravity manipulation to control Cynth, and both she and Will were arrested.

Meanwhile, Cybele — the only one to escape, and the person with the source — ran directly into Aidyn and Damon, another pair searching for the source. Seeing a human, Damon immediately held her at gunpoint, but Aidyn recognized her to be the girl who had tried to help him during the fight at Tercy's grave. Seeing Aidyn again, Cybele had a flashback — when she was eight, she had nearly been killed by a gang of child hibri, and Aidyn had saved her, which was the start of her realizing the hibri and patrias were just like the humans. Aidyn also remembered the event, but additionally recalled Cybele bailing him out of trouble when humans saw him with her. Collectively, the two trusted each other, and the doubtful Damon didn't shoot. After a semi-private discussion, Damon and Aidyn agreed to take Cybele to Ryne, as long as they convinced her to give up the source willingly. The three of them headed back to the temporary Voc base at the festival.

While Aidyn tried to talk Cybele into handing the source over, Damon got called in by Ryne, who told him to take the newly-captured Cynth and Will to a patria jail while she searched for any of Cynth's possible associates. Damon reluctantly agreed and set off alone with the two captives in tow. On the way, Cynth forced the attention of a passing human guard, who then arrested all three of them for a supposed escape attempt and locked them away in a human jail cell for several hours. When they were finally found by Ryne, Aidyn, and Lyla, Cynth negotiated her freedom in exchange for Damon's life. She went free, taking Will and Damon with her as she immediately sailed towards the closest continent: Altno.
