Chapter Twenty-Nine: Dream Big, But Not Too Big
Zai's POV-
"Hey, Zai!"
Kaminari runs over to me as I approached our meeting spot, an arm behind his back. "Glad you could make it!"
"Of course! I wouldn't have missed it for the world," I reply, before tilting my head and looking around him to try and see what he's hiding. "What do you got there?"
His face turns a little pink as he pulls out a yellow rose with a blue bow messily attached to the stem. "I-I know it's not much, but I couldn't just show up empty handed.."
I giggle a bit as he hands me the rose, lifting the flower to breathe in the sweet calming scent. "You didn't have to, but I appreciate it." I reach over to kiss his cheek, and I could practically see his brain short circuit for a moment. I end up bursting into laughter as his face turns even more red.
"O-o-of course!" Kaminari starts, before looking me up and down. "You look gorgeous by the way.."
Ama chose a dark blue dress with black lace on the straps, a matching bow wrapped around my waist and the skirt ending just above my knees. A pair of black tights and blue stilettoes finish the look, and thankfully it's gotten a little warmer since this morning. Of course I carry a small black cross-body purse as well, to hold my phone and a few other things.
Kaminari is dressed in a leather jacket and a white t-shirt, along with black pants and matching boots. Not too far off from his hero outfit, now that I think about it.
"Aww, you're too sweet!" I respond with another laugh. "Compliments and flowers, it hasn't even been ten minutes!"
Kaminari gives me a soft smile before taking my free hand in his. "Well, just you wait. We've still got a whole night ahead of us."
We make idle chatter as we walk, a good portion of our conversation was about my latest concert. He was astonished to find out that I didn't actually expect that big of a crowd, though I was prepared to perform for bigger.
I'll be honest, moving to Musutafu was a bit difficult, in more ways than one. Many of my fans in Hosu were disappointed that I wouldn't have anymore local concerts there for a while, but thankfully most of them understood.
Compared to a lot of singers I really don't get a lot of hate either. The only hate comments I ever see are from people who've never seen me perform, those that have end up coming back for more. I've got a few more scheduled, and my manager is even talking about going on a small tour during break.
Maybe I'll invite Bakugo to go with me.
I blink a couple times in surprise, not expecting that kind of thought to cross my mind. He'd turn down my invitation in a heartbeat, I think to myself, letting out a light sigh.
"Hey.." Kaminari's voice jolts me out of my thoughts, giving me a look of concern. "Are you alright? I didn't say anything bad, did I?"
"Oh, n-no!" I say with my usual bright smile. "Not at all, just uh, thinking about the test we took earlier in math. I'm pretty sure I bombed it."
The blonde gives me an understanding smile before responding. "I probably did too, I got lost in the middle of it. Sorry for the sudden question, it's just that your smile is always so bright you know? Seeing it fall a little made me worried."
Kaminari squeezes my hand before leading me up the path, I didn't even notice we had stopped. The smell of bread and cinnamon rolls waft through the air, I find my smile growing wider as we enter what looks like a rustic little café.
A bell jingles as the door closes behind us, and I take the time to take in the cafe's aesthetic. Brick walls encase the little coffee shop while some upbeat pop music plays through the speakers. An old timey jukebox is set up beside a large open space, which I assume is some kind of dance floor.
The tables and chairs look like they're made of a dark mahogany, though they're most likely stained so it can get that lustrous glow. Little globes of light hang from the ceiling, the words 'Jukebox Café' written in cursive on a large chalkboard.
Kaminari leads me over to one of the many booths that line the walls of the café, one that just so happens to be next to a window. "I know you're probably used to fancy restaurants, I'm sorry I couldn't afford a more expensive place," he adds while rubbing the back of his neck. "I saved up everything I could for today though, so don't worry about paying, okay?"
I'm not sure whether to be happy that he worried I wouldn't like it, or offended that he thought I'd turn this down.
I open my mouth to answer as a waitress walks over with a couple of menus. "Are you kidding?" I ask with a light scoff. "I don't normally go out to fancy places in general. The most expensive place I'll go is maybe In N Out or the closest taco truck."
"Really? But.. you're a celebrity! Why not enjoy the benefits of the rich life?"
I let out a sigh as the waitress returns to take our order. I ask for a white chocolate mocha and Kaminari gets a salted caramel frappuccino. "I donate a lot of my proceeds to charity. I keep enough so I can live comfortably, but I don't want to flaunt it."
"No offense, but I figured you'd be the person who would."
"Fair enough, I do like to show off how amazing I am. I mean, have you SEEN me?"
We continue like that for a while, though I feel myself starting to get a little bored. His questions revolve around my work, stuff I get asked so much already by fans and the press. I'm just going through the motions again as he talks.
"Hey, why don't you go up and sing some karaoke?" Kaminari offers with a small laugh. "I'd love to see you perform again, if you're feeling up to it that is."
I shake my head no as I sip on my drink. "I'd rather not. Sure I love the spotlight, but if I go up and perform then it'll ruin our date.."
"What do you mean?" he asks with a bit of confusion.
"One, people here who do know me will take videos and probably post them online. We've been lucky enough that anyone who does know me is polite enough to leave us be. Then the press is gonna show up and ask me a ton of questions and butt in where they don't belong."
The blonde's smile falls as he nods in understanding, looking over towards the stage. I take another sip of my drink before he suddenly stands up and runs off. My eyes widen in surprise as Kaminari talks with a somewhat older male before getting up on stage.
What the heck is he doing?
I nearly choke as music begins to blare from the speakers, Kaminari winking over at me as he grabs the microphone.
Hey baby, won't you look my way?
I can be your new addiction
Hey baby, what you gotta say?
All you're giving me is fiction
I'm a sorry sucker and this happens all the time
I found out that everybody talks
Everybody talks, everybody talks
I burst into laughter as his voice carries through the café, everyone's heads swiveling to the blonde on stage. His voice isn't half bad, and I find myself dancing a little in my seat. Only a little though, any more and my injuries will start acting up.
It started with a whisper
And that was when I kissed her
And then she made my lips hurt
I could hear the chit chat
Take me to your love shack
Mama's always gotta back track
When everybody talks back
Hey honey, you could be my drug
You could be my new prescription
Too much could be an overdose
All this trash talk make me itchin'
Oh my, my shit
Everybody talks, everybody talks
Everybody talks, too much
It started with a whisper
And that was when I kissed her
And then she made my lips hurt
I could hear the chit chat
Take me to your love shack
Mama's always gotta back track
When everybody talks back
You know what the greatest thing about music is? The feeling of liberation it gives you, the joyous rush of adrenaline when you sing your first note or play your first tune. Once you begin to lose yourself in the music, all your worries start to slip away.
At least, that's how it is for me. Without music, the world would probably feel like it's painted in black and white, no color or emotions to give it personality.
Hey
Hey sugar, show me all your love
All you're giving me is friction
Hey sugar, what you gotta say?
It started with a whisper
And that was when I kissed her
And then she made my lips hurt
I could hear the chit chat
Take me to your love shack
Mama's always gotta back track
When everybody talks back
Everybody talks
Everybody talks
Everybody talks
Everybody talks
Everybody talks
Everybody talks, back
It started with a whisper
(everybody talks, everybody talks)
And that was when I kissed her
(everybody talks, everybody talks)
Everybody talks
Everybody talks, back
I can't help but think of that feeling as I watch him up there. Kaminari's smile is so bright as he gives no thought to how the rest of the customers perceive him. Even if he isn't the best singer, his smile radiates how happy he is in this moment, and that makes it so much better.
Thank you guys so much for reading, if you've gotten to this point in the story, comment how you think the sister's are going to do in the sport's festival! What might happen between Zai and Kaminari, and is there a possibility for romance for Ama and Momo? Find out next time!
Hizashi Yamada. Hero name: Present Mic, the Voice Hero. Quirk: Voice. Hizashi's Quirk allows him to increase the volume of his voice, giving him an ability that is similar to a sonic scream. The sound from Hizashi's Quirk is strong enough to cause people's ears to bleed from far away.
His quirk works slightly similarly to Zai's in a way, honestly he's one of my favorite heroes in the series.
Daily quote: "The great hero Napoleon Bonaparte once said... 'True heroism consists in being superior to the ills of life.' Plus Ultra!! Break a leg, everyone!!" - Present Mic
