Chapter Five: Prove Yourself!
Ama's POV-
My older sister's smile hasn't left her face through the past few events, even though she only did decently well in one of them. I don't think Aizawa would really expel anyone here, but if he does then I already know who he'd get rid of first.
Don't get me wrong, Aizawa does care for both of us. It's just that Zai is basically the problem child out of us two, and he can't act as our caretaker but as our teacher while we are at this school.
Zai knows he doesn't think she's cut out for the hero life, but she's still going through with it because being a hero is her dream.
I watch as Ururaka throws the ball next, and it just keeps floating and floating upwards. "So her quirk is like anti-gravity?" I ask Zai, who nods without taking her eyes off of the girl.
"Seems like it." She says as Aizawa shows us the infinity symbol that popped up on his device. Well no shit, if she can remove the gravity from an object then it's never going to land, I think to myself while other classmates gasp in awe and surprise.
Next up is that green haired boy, I think his name was Midoriya? His body is shaking as he makes his way to the circle, I already feel bad for the boy. He doesn't really look like the hero type, but from what I heard he did some pretty amazing things at the exam.
"Midoriya isn't doing so well," Iida says from beside me, and he's not wrong. Midoriya hasn't been any sort of exceptional during these tests, though I can't say my sister is doing much better.
Bakugo pipes up then from his spot beside Zai. "Well duh, he's a quirkless runt!"
"Quirkless? So you haven't heard about his feats during the entrance exam?"
"Huh?"
I narrow my eyes at the two before turning my attention back to the green haired boy before us. I wonder why Bakugo would call him that, because someone who is quirkless would definitely have failed the entrance exam. He obviously didn't get in on recommendation, but Bakugo talks as if he knows Midoriya well enough to say this.
Both my sister and I watch him intensely as he winds up his arm, and for a moment I could have sworn I saw his arm glow a little. But just as he throws the ball the glow disappears, and the ball doesn't go very far at all.
"Forty-six meters." Aizawa says, and I notice his hair is floating upwards. He must be using his quirk, I remember seeing him use it on Zai whenever her music got on his nerves. His scarf is floating around him as well, revealing his signature golden goggles that rested underneath.
Aizawa makes his way over to Midoriya, realization filling his eyes. "Wait.. You're the erasure hero, EraserHead!" The green haired boy says, practically shaking in his boots.
"Eraser.. I've never heard of him."
"I think I've heard his name before, he's an angler type hero!"
I roll my eyes as my classmates are all gathered together to gossip about our teacher. Aizawa isn't one of those heroes that likes the spotlight, so he's not particularly well known compared to other heroes. However, he is the scariest hero I've ever met in my life. Granted I haven't known many, but still.
"Hey Ama, you and Zai are sisters right?" Momo asks, jolting me out of my slight daze. My heart begins to race as I meet her gaze, and I find myself resting my palm on my chest to hopefully relax myself. What the hell is this?
"Uh, yeah.." I merely respond, looking around for my sister. Zai stands not too far away from us, but her brow is furrowed in concentration as she watches Aizawa talk to Midoriya. I didn't even notice her walk away, I think to myself, but my older sister still has a slight smile on her face.
It's kind of creeping me out.
"Well, I just wanted to ask what her quirk was," Momo says, rubbing the back of her neck. "I hadn't seen her use a quirk at all today, and when I saw yours I thought your quirk must be different than hers. I'm worried she might end up at the bottom along with Midoriya at this rate."
I scowl a little as I turn my attention back to the black haired girl. "I suggest worrying about yourself, my sister is doing just fine. As for her quirk, it's her choice to tell you or not. If she chooses not to, then I suggest simply attending one of her concerts. You'll see it then."
Momo flinches a bit at my tone, but I can't help it. They're already looking down on my sister and she hasn't done anything wrong. "You don't need to be rude.." the girl says in a soft tone, slowly backing away from me. "I'll leave you be."
As she walks away I let out a light sigh, but my heart still hasn't stopped pounding in my chest. My face feels like it's on fire, so I gently tap my cheeks to bring myself back down to earth. What is going on with me today?
Aizawa returns to the side, and I watch Midoriya look at the softball in his hands. His face tells me our teacher didn't give him any words of encouragement, though I'm not particularly surprised.
My eyes widen as the kid winds up his arm to throw the ball once more, but I could see that his finger was glowing instead of his arm this time. A determined expression was on his face now, and he launched the ball with about as much explosive power as Bakugo's.
However, I noticed that his finger is now a bright purple, and I have no doubt in my mind that he broke it.
"Sensei.." I turn my attention from the ball currently still soaring in the air to the green haired boy before us. "I.. can still move!"
"His finger seems to be swollen. Thinking back to the entrance exam... what a strange quirk," Iida says, his eyes still on the ball as it flies through the air. The stern boy has a point, his quirk may be powerful but it looks like it hurts him in the process. It's like his body can't handle the sheer amount of power he has. How did he even get this far?
The device in Aizawa's hand reads 705.3 meters. I look over at the explosive boy not too far from me, who looks like he actually is about to burst into flames. I see my sister's gaze on Bakugo as well, and her eyes widen as he launches himself forward towards his classmate.
"What the hell?! Explain yourself Deku!!!" He cries as he rushes towards Midoriya. Is Deku a nickname of some kind? I wonder as Midoriya screams in fear from his classmate's anger. A moment later, Bakugo is wrapped up in Aizawa's signature scarf, holding the angry boy back.
"What the.. what is this damn thing made of?" Bakugo says with a scowl, and I notice that Aizawa's hair is floating once more.
"It's a capture weapon made of carbon fibers and a special alloy wire. Now stop using your quirk already, it's giving me serious dry eye." Our homeroom teacher glares at Bakugo, who merely narrows his eyes but otherwise lets his hands fall to his sides.
Aizawa removes the scarf and leans up to put some eye drops in his eyes before continuing. "What a waste of time. Prepare for the next event."
We all gathered around Aizawa as the final event was wrapped up and pulled to a close. I look up at Zai who has the biggest smile on her face, but I know she bombed the rest of the events save for the seated toe touch. She's always been pretty flexible, so she did really well on that one too.
On the other hand, I didn't have much issue with the rest of the events myself. I have no doubt I'll have a higher ranking than my sister, but I am worried that she may end up at the bottom. Then again, Midoriya didn't do well on any of the other tests either.
Maybe there is hope for Zai after all.
"Moving along, time for the results," Aizawa says, glancing over all of us with the same blank expression. "Your total scores simply reflect your performance in each of the events. Explaining the process would be pointless and a waste of time, so all you'll receive are the final rankings."
Aizawa pulls up the scoreboard as a hologram, and we all turn our attention to the rankings. Just as I suspected, I placed pretty high on the board. Sixth place... not bad, I think to myself before searching for my sister's name.
21st place: Benzaiten Nobuyuki
22nd place: Izuku Midoriya
I look over to see my sister smiling brightly as usual, as if her score didn't affect her at all. "Wow Ama, you did really well!" Zai says, running over and wrapping me up in a hug. "I'm so proud of you!"
"Aren't you upset about your score though?" I ask, furrowing my brow a little from worry as my sister shakes her head.
"Nah, I just did my best and that's the result! Looks like I've got a lot more training to do!" Zai ruffles up my hair a bit as Aizawa pulls the hologram back down.
Our homeroom teacher gets a sly grin on his face as he puts the device in his pocket. "Also, I was lying about expelling someone."
Oh dear god, the reactions on our classmates' faces are pure gold. All of them literally looked like the surprised Pikachu meme, and I see Zai covering her mouth with her hand to stifle a laugh. "That was just a rational deception, meant to bring out the best in all of you."
Most of our class screams in surprise and betrayal, though I see Momo and that half and half boy merely shrug as if they also figured it out. "Anyway, we're done here. Your books and everything you will need for this course is back at the classroom, so I suggest to give them a look." Aizawa finishes, and the rest of the class breaks off into groups of their own.
After a few moments of silence, I feel my sister nudge my arm. "You know... why don't you go try talking with Momo?" Zai says, causing me to roll my eyes. "I saw you chatting with her earlier."
"Well, she was putting you down and I kind of told her off, so I'd prefer just to get our stuff and go home," I respond with a pout, before squeaking as Zai pushes me right in the black haired girl's direction.
"Then go apologize!" Zai demands with a bright smile on her face.
"What? Why should I have to apologize?" I ask, somehow managing to stop the woman from pushing me all the way over there.
Zai raises a brow before resting a hand on her hip. "People are going to say nasty things about me all the time. What exactly did she say to you for you to tell her off?"
After I explain our conversation, my sister bursts into laughter which causes me to frown in response. "Sis, she was just being concerned for her classmate," Zai says, patting my head a little. "I love you, but you need to calm yourself a little in those situations. I appreciate you backing me up, but when you think about her words, were they really antagonistic?"
Looking back on our conversation, I guess my sister is right. "I think if you went to apologize, Momo might even want to be your friend," Zai teases, poking me in the side gently.
I feel my face heat up at her comment, and I tap my face again to shake it off. "I don't need friends, Zai. When I graduate I'll work solo to stop drug trafficking or something. As long as I have you.. you're all I need in my life."
Zai lets out a small sigh before speaking. "Ama, you can't get through life on your own, and I won't be around forever. We may end up in different agencies, or working in two different cities. Hero work is dangerous, we can't guarantee that either of us would even survive to have grandchildren. As sad as that is, it's reality."
I look down towards my feet as my sister rests a hand on my shoulder. "But the bonds you make with people will last a lifetime, however long that may be. If you need help and I'm not around, these are the people you'll call upon to aid you. It's best to make friends where and when you can, you never know if you'll need them someday."
I feel my heart sink even more, and I know my sister picked up on it as she leans down to be eye level with me. "I'm not asking you to be all buddy buddy, I know how hard it is for you to make friends. All I'm asking, is that you try."
"That's all I could ever ask of you, little sister."
Ahhh I love writing this already, the sisters are so precious~
Izuku Midoriya- Quirk: One for All. A secret quirk that was inherited from a certain well known hero. Essentially a stockpile quirk that grew stronger as it passed down from wielder to wielder.
However it is very difficult to control, especially seeing as Izuku was originally born quirkless. He had to train for months just for his body to accept this power, but the backlash at the moment is that he breaks his bones when he uses it. Hopefully that will change in due time.
