Chapter Eighteen: So Angry It Hurts
I heard later that day that Iida became class president in Midoriya's place. I didn't wake up for a good while thanks to Recovery Girl's quirk, the school day was almost over by the time I came to. I was surprised to find Ojiro by my bedside, napping quietly in the chair with his tail over his shoulder.
Recovery girl filled me in on what I missed while I was asleep. Apparently Ojiro and her talked a lot as he waited, so she was able to give me a basic run down.
The tailed man's eyes began to flutter open, widening as he notices that I'm no longer asleep. "Z-Zai!" He says in surprise, giving me a soft smile. "You're finally awake. Aizawa sent me to check on you, though I'm not really sure why..."
That helicopter dad probably thinks I snuck out or something, I think to myself, rolling my eyes as I sit up a bit. "Is everyone still in class then?" I ask, stretching my sore muscles a bit and swinging my legs over the side of the bed.
"Yeah, though everyone is pretty worried about you. Your sister went on a rampage, and Aizawa had to restrain her with his scarf to keep her from running out the door."
"Why am I not surprised?"
"I mean, she is your sister. You're kind of the only one who ISN'T surprised."
I let out a small laugh as I comb through my hair with my fingers. "You've got a point there. I don't want to worry the others though, so we should probably head back before the day is over."
"Are you sure you're feeling good enough to?" Ojiro asks with a worried expression. "I know you have your fight with Bakugo after school, so you should take it easy."
"Don't you worry about me, fluff boy," I say with a smile, finding my stilettos beside the bed. Someone must have taken them off for me. "I can handle a decent punch from All Might, so this little accident isn't going to faze me."
Ojiro merely lets out a small sigh as I put on my shoes, standing up and holding the door open for me. I resist the urge to reach over and pet his tail as I wave goodbye to Recovery Girl, who's typing away at her computer. The sweet lady gives me a smile and a wave back as we make our exit.
The entire walk was silent, save for my slight humming as we headed to the classroom. I never did like the silence, I think it would drive me crazy if I had to live like that. But Ojiro doesn't seem like the talkative type, it's not like I could get a ruse out of him either like I can with Bakugo.
The bell rang just as we made it to the hallway our classroom is located in, and students began to pour out the doors. The first person to notice us was Hagakure, and the only reason I knew that was because of her shrill voice and the floating clothes rushing towards us.
"Ojiroooo!!" She calls, her skirt swaying behind her as she skips over to us. "And Zai! I'm happy to see you're doing better. What time is your fight today?"
"It'll be at the beach in a few hours," I respond with a smile, rubbing the back of my neck. "I'm probably going to head home to drop off some things and relax before then."
"Alright girl, we'll be rooting for you!" she says with a slight giggle. "Though I think Kirishima is going to be torn between who he wants to win."
I roll my eyes before I hear the giant door slam open. It's so loud that all of the students stop in their tracks, their eyes shifting to the person in the doorway.
Ama.
Her gaze zeroes in on me, and pure rage fills those golden eyes of hers. "ZAAAAAAAAAAAAAI! I'M GOING TO MURDER YOU FOR SCARING ME TO DEATH!" She cries, marching her way through the crowd.
"W-whaaaaa?" I stutter with a nervous laugh, taking a step back as I prepare myself to run. I'm not necessarily terrified of my sister, but she can throw a mean right hook. "I'm perfectly fine though, see? Nothing to worry about-"
"DON'T MAKE ME GET THE BAT!"
"OH GOD NO NO NO NO-"
"I'M GETTING THE BAT!"
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAooprettybirdHOLYSHITAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!"
I scream as my younger sister chases me down the hall, creating a bat out of light in her hands. My heart keeps a steady pace as I weave in between students, sprinting as if my life depends on it. I only got distracted for a moment, as a pretty bird flew by the window. But then I remembered I was about to be murdered, so that didn't last long.
Ama's POV-
"You're such a fucking idiot."
Zai gives me a bright smile, wincing as she holds her now bruised arm. "Hey, this is domestic abuse!" she protests, gesturing to her 'battle scars' as she likes to call them. "It wasn't my fault anyhow, plus I had Bakugo to help me. Don't tell anyone I said that though."
I wiggle my eyebrows at her with a smirk. "If I didn't know any better, I'd say you two are getting pretty close," I reply, nudging her side with my arm.
"First he drags you over to his table on the first day, then saves you from being trampled today. It's like some twisted love story in a romance drama novel."
Zai raises a brow at me in return, shifting her bag on her shoulder. "You forget who you're talking to."
"That's fair," I sigh. "You've never been one for dating after the incident back in middle school."
A couple years ago, Zai dated someone by the name of Jackson Stone. Such a cliché name, but he can't help the choice his parents made I guess. He was a foreigner from the United States, his quirk allowed him to control, well, stones and shit. It was a family trait of theirs.
Zai doesn't easily get interested in boys, despite her flirtatious nature. But Jackson caught her interest, it was the talk of the school since she was basically student royalty. They were together for almost a year, until Zai caught him cheating on her with another girl behind her back.
My sister didn't even have the strength to cry then.
Dad threatened to go over to the guy's house and kick his ass, while Mom was trying to get through to Zai as my older sister practically checked out of existence. It was her first break up, and she had fallen so deep in love with him that she was in shock for a good few weeks.
I dated a couple times before Zai broke up with Jackson, but after seeing what happened to her I figured it might be better to try and distance myself from people as much as possible. I know friends can break your heart like that too, and I won't make the same mistake that Zai did.
"That said, are you ready for your fight?" I ask, shaking my head a little to rid the thoughts from my mind. "You know Bakugo is pretty ruthless when it comes to combat."
"Don't worry sis, I got this!" Zai says with a bright smile as we make our way to the beach. That was the decided location of this sanctioned battle, the shores had recently been wiped clean of any litter or garbage that had plagued the golden sands. "I have the high ground now, young Padawan!"
"You and your references," I respond, rolling my eyes. "But that's true. Bakugo doesn't know what your quirk does yet, you've only shown it off in training. Since it's sound based, it makes sense that he couldn't tell what you were doing because no one in the monitor room could hear what was going on."
"Exaaaaaaaactly, and that's going to be his downfall."
The rest of our class was already waiting for us, I went to join them on the slopes while Zai met up with Bakugo, Iida and Aizawa on the shore.
Thankfully it's a sanctioned fight, so we don't have to worry about getting in trouble. Aizawa will be there to stop either of them from killing each other or destroying the scenery.
"Mind if I sit here?"
I look up to see Todoroki standing beside me, hands stuffed in his pockets. The rest of our classmates are a bit further down, but I chose to sit away to relax before things got real.
"Not at all," I reply as I pat the grass beside me. The bi-colored boy gives me a light smile before shifting to take a seat.
"I'm glad I was able to make it," he says in his usual calm manner. One thing I've noticed about Todoroki is that he's normally very soft spoken, even coming across as monotonous sometimes. "My siblings were giving me a headache."
"You too?" I ask as I watch my sister, who's wrapped up in a conversation with Iida. The stern boy's hands fly sporadically as he speaks, so he's probably drilling the importance of safety into her head.
"Yeah, especially my brother," he sighs, leaning back on his hands. "Mind if I ask you something?"
I merely shrug, and the two toned boy continues. "I heard about your parents on the news.." Todoroki starts, his voice just a tad softer. "Forgive me if I'm crossing any lines here, but how are you two holding up after all of that...?"
I blink a couple times in surprise at his question. It's only been a few weeks since they passed, but not once had anyone asked how we were doing. Well, no one asked me anyways. I can't speak for Zai, so I wouldn't know.
"We both cope in our own way," I admit, seeing my sister laugh and poke fun at Iida's antics.
"Her and I are so very different. It took me a bit to process everything when it happened, but I was a crying mess when Zai told me. I wanted to believe that she was lying, that it wasn't true, but Zai would never lie to me about anything."
Todoroki is silent as I talk, and I can't help but smile a little because of it.
"At the funeral.. Zai was there to keep me grounded. She showed no emotion as we watched our parents get buried. At first, I was even angry with her. I mean, they were her parents too, you know?"
I bite my tongue to keep from revealing our living situation, pulling my knees up to my chest. "Actually.. I'm still angry. I don't understand how she doesn't feel upset or even angry at the villain that took them away from us."
"She always has that smile on her face, sometimes it hurts to see how happy she is."
Zai isn't afraid of anything, but she isn't stupid enough to stick around when Ama gets the bat xD
Toru Hagakure- Quirk: Invisibility. I don't think I need to explain this one.
