Remember
Kanan drove towards their destination. Only a few days after they had discussed it, he and Hera were on their way to somewhere nice to get out and walk, and maybe have a coffee. Hera deserved a break from living in her car and working as many shifts as possible at the grocery store.
He parked the car, and then helped Hera out. It was nice place near the coast and there were some forested areas. Hera glanced around taking in her scenery. She smiled. Kanan took that as a sign that she liked it. That made him happy. Hera deserved happiness. She also didn't deserve to be here, but until they could return, he'd try to make her time here decent.
"This is nice," Hera said smiling. She turned her attention back to Kanan. "Have you been here before?"
"Um, only once," Kanan replied. They began to walk towards the trail that went through the forest and had occasional ocean views. Kanan only came here to think once. To think about all that had been going on.
Hera nodded acknowledging his statement. They were both silent for a while as they walked. Hera took in the lovely scenery while Kanan was lost in his thoughts. Being surrounded by lots of trees and plant life made him feel even more lost. He looked at Hera to bring himself back to the current moment. Being with her always made him feel more centered.
Hera stopped walking and began to stare at something hidden in the trees. She squinted and continued to stare. "Do you see that?"
Kanan looked away from her and looked at the trees. "Uh, no. What are you seeing?"
"I don't know," Hera replied curiously. She took a step off the trail. "But I defiantly think there's something."
She stared for a few more moments and then took Kanan's hand. "Come on! Let's go see what it is!"
Kanan had no idea what she saw, but he smiled anyways as Hera lead him through the trees towards the mystery object. She was determined to find whatever she saw. She walked through the trees both carefully and quickly. After a few minutes of walking, she stopped and stared at the object in front of them. It was the Ghost. The very ship their crew called home.
Kanan stood frozen in shock. How was the Ghost here?! It wasn't too difficult to believe, after all, they were here too, but still, it was bizarre. Kanan stared at Hera to see her expression. Did she recognize the ship she was proud to call her own? He couldn't tell.
"What in the universe is this?" Hera exclaimed walking up to the Ghost. She ran her hand against the hull brushing off the leaves and fallen branches. "I've never seen anything like this before!"
So, she didn't remember. Kanan frowned. "I-"
"Maybe this is some weird project someone decided to leave behind in the woods," she said with a chuckle. Though she didn't remember her ship, she stared at the ship in awe. "Its very detailed, whatever this is."
Kanan walked up to her and stared up and the ship. "You don't remember?"
Hera turned her attention to Kanan. "Huh?"
Kanan continued to look away. "Why don't you remember?"
"Caleb, what are you talking about?" Hera said taking a step away. She lowered her hand as she now focused on Kanan's words instead of the strange ship in front of her.
Kanan looked down. He shouldn't have said anything, but he just wanted Hera to remember. He just wanted to face this strange world with her, not as strangers. He wanted to be with their crew again. He held back his tears.
Hera folded her arms and furrowed her eyebrows. "Why would I remember this, Caleb?"
"I'm sorry, just forget about it," Kanan whispered. He put his hands in his sweater pocket and began to walk away.
Hera watched him leave. She was so confused about what happened. Why would she have any reason to remember this, and why would he even ask her? He was still within her sight, and she would have to follow him eventually, after all, he drove her here. She looked back at the Ghost with uncertainty and sighed. She then went to catch up with Kanan.
When she returned next to him he was quiet and she was as well. Nothing more was said the entire trip back to the car, and the entire ride back, even though both had things they wanted to say. Hera had more than enough questions going on through her head. Should she be concerned with Kanan's behavior, or was it just a random moment? She didn't see him as a threat, but still she was a tad weirded out.
Kanan dropped Hera back off at the grocery store in time for her shift. "Bye," he said quietly.
"Bye," Hera replied. She should've thanked him for letting her feel a little normal for once, but didn't. She walked away into the grocery store.
