Not So Together Again
"So, tell me Sabine, how did you meet this Ezra?" Hera asked as she turned on the car blinker. This was certainly a part of town she wasn't familiar with, but with her life right now, this is where she might as well end up.
"Oh, it was before I came to you, but I was painting in his neighborhood. Then we started talking," Sabine explained.
Hera raised an eyebrow. "But that doesn't explain how he knows where you live."
"You remember those two guys standing outside the other day?"
"Yeah."
"Ezra was that younger one. He must've recognized me-" Sabine's voice trailed off as she caught a glimpse of a hill far off in the distance. That's where her home was. Home. She almost began to feel sad, but she was sure they didn't care about her back at home.
Hera had no response to that comment other than "Hmm". She wasn't sure about this, but she had to trust Sabine.
"Is that the place?" Hera asked parking the car.
Sabine took off her seatbelt. "Yup! Come on."
Hera glanced around. It was wrong off her to be as cautious as she was. Just because it was a very run-down neighborhood, didn't meant that kind good-hearted people didn't live here.
Sabine knocked on the door. A few moments later Mira Bridger opened the door with a wide smile on her face. "Come in! You must be Sabine and?"
Hera smiled and shook Mira's hand. "I'm Hera, Hera Syndulla. Sabine lives at my home for orphans, fosters and runaways."
Mira welcomed them in. "Well that is very kind of you. Ezra should be out in a moment, and dinner should be done shortly."
Hera and Sabine sat down on the old floral couch and glanced around the room. Despite the family's circumstances, Mira honestly did her absolute best to make it feel like home. There were old family pictures than hung here and there on the wall. Many them had Ephraim Bridger in them. That was Ezra's father, who was no longer with them.
Ezra came out from his room holding a basket of laundry. "Oh, hey Sabine! You're here!"
Sabine smiled and stood up. "Hi. I just wanted to say thank you for inviting me. It means a lot to me."
Ezra shrugged as if it was no big deal. "You're welcome. Hey, I need to hang these clothes outside to dry. I'll be back." Ezra smiled and went to the door. "Oh, Mom! I'm going to invite Caleb over for dinner too. Is that okay?"
Mira furrowed her eyebrows as she placed plates and bowls on the table. "Um, I don't see why not. It would be a way of saying thank you after he watched you the other day while I was at work."
Ezra nodded and headed outside. Mira put a few more bowls down along with a few spoons.
Hera cleared her throat and broke the science. "So, Mira, what do you for work?" That was a horribly boring question.
"Oh, I work at a news station. I'm not a reporter or anything," she explained with a shake of her head. "I just work front desk, even though there are other things I would much rather do. How about you?"
Sabine sighed. She didn't like boring grown-up talk. She got up and looked at the pictures on the wall.
Hera took a sip of water then went on explain her own career. "Like I mentioned earlier, I run a home for orphans and runways. Occasionally I get children in the foster care system."
"That's wonderful. Kids need people like you," Mira said warmly.
"Well, it won't last much longer."
"Why's that?"
Hera let out a heavy sigh. "The bills kept stacking up, and now I'm in a lot of debt. I only have a week to pay it or the home gets shut down."
Mira gasped. "Oh, I'm so sorry! I wish I could do something to help but-"
"Thank you," Hera said. "But there's no way out of this. I thought for a moment there was, but all I can say is don't vote for Palpatine."
Mira tilted her head a little and turned off the stove. "I have heard he's not the best guy."
Ezra walked back inside with Caleb at his side. "Is dinner done, Mom?"
"Yes it is. You all can take a seat and eat as much as you'd like," Mira replied.
Dinner was awfully quiet. Nobody talked much and just ate. Hera however felt like Caleb kept staring at her. Which made this uncomfortable. When everyone finished their meal Ezra took everyone's plates and did the dishes.
"Hey, Ezra," Sabine said questioningly. "When you're done with that do you want to help me with my painting?"
"You mean it?" Ezra was beaming.
"Yeah! Why not?" Sabine smiled.
Ezra hurried up with the dishes then headed outside with Sabine.
Mira smiled as she watched her son leave. "Thank you for bringing Sabine over. Ezra needs friends."
Hera smiled. "No problem. I'd be happy to bring her over again. You two could even come over if you'd like."
"Ezra would like that," Mira said taking her apron off. "Excuse me for a moment. I'll be right back." Mira tossed her apron onto the table and went to her room.
Hera took a sip of her freshly brewed coffee feeling a little awkward with only her and Caleb in this room. He looked like wanted to say something but then decided not to.
"I'm sorry," he said at last.
Hera placed her coffee down. "What now?"
"I'm sorry about what happened. I overheard it when I was outside with Ezra," Caleb said quietly.
"I appreciate the support, but there's nothing anybody can do," Hera frowned. "We haven't been properly introduced, have we?"
"No, we haven't," Caleb said standing up and sat next to Hera. "I'm Caleb Dume. Ezra's neighbor."
"I'm Hera, and I guess you already know my situation." She picked her coffee back up and took another sip.
Caleb moved closer to her. There was so much he wanted to say. He wanted to hold her and and tell her how much he missed her. How confused he was about everything, but he was glad she was here with him. He didn't realize it, but as he got so lost in his thoughts he sat even closer to Hera and she looked extremely uncomfortable.
"Hera, there's so much I want to tell you-" He cringed immediately. Why did he say that?
Hera stood up taking her coffee with her. "Look, I don't know what you're trying to do, but please stop! You're creeping me out!"
Caleb looked down ashamed. "I'm sorry. . ."
Hera looked down as well not sure what to think of what happened. "I'm going to check on Ezra and Sabine."
Caleb watched Hera walk outside and shut the door behind her. He sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. He didn't know how much longer he could take this. There had to be someone else who remembered.
