Moving In

Sabine set her small box down and looked around the living room. Though she had only been here, what was it, one time? It immediately felt like home. The fireplace was on and she could swear she smelled cookies baking in the oven. This is exactly what she always imagined a home should be. Even if was small and run down, this was a home.

"Thank you again for everything Mrs. Bridger," Sabine said. She sat on the couch and stared at the fireplace. She smiled warmly.

"You're welcome Sabine!" Mira replied. She stared down at Sabine's box. "So, this is all you have?"

Sabine looked at the box. "Yeah. That's it."

Mira sat in the armchair and set the dish cloth she was holding down. "So, where exactly were you living before this? After the home shutdown I mean."

"Well, I asked an old friend of mine if I could live with her, and she said yes, but she was trouble," Sabine answered. She thought about how this friend, Ketsu Onyo was always looking for trouble. She stole things day after day after day. "It got to the point where I came there every other day and spent more time on the streets."

Mira frowned. "I'm so sorry you had to go through that! Well, you're here now, and you're welcome to stay as long as you'd like."

"Thank you," Sabine said with a smile.

"Ezra's cleaning the spare room out for you. I hope it will work out for you," Mira said standing up. She went to check on the cookies.

"Trust me, whatever it is, it's better then the streets. Don't worry about it," Sabine replied. She paused for a minute and then changed the subject. "Ezra told me that Hera has asked about me. Does she come here often?"

"No, not often, but she will be here on Thanksgiving," Mira answered. She did pulled the cookies out and turned the oven off. "She has asked about you though. I think she's worried about what happened to you. To all of you who were there."

"Whatever happened to her?" Sabine asked.

"I'm not sure, I didn't really ask," Mira replied. She sat back down in the armchair.

Sabine had no response. She stared back at the fireplace and watched the flames wave back and forth. She wondered what her parents were doing now. Did they care that she was gone? Did they ever make an effort to find her? Maybe they didn't care. Maybe they did. She had no idea.

Ezra walked into the room. "The room is ready for you," he announced.

Sabine stood up and picked up her box and then followed Ezra to her room. It was small and had a view of the backyard. Against the wall there was a small bed already covered in blankets and pillows. It wasn't amazing, but it would work, and as long as Mrs. Bridger allowed her to put her own flair on it, it would be perfect.

Ezra left the room and Sabine sat on her bed and began to unpack.
