Chapter Twenty Four: Our Ability
"Listen up kids, you've got to learn how to control your abilities but before you can do that you need to learn about them," Mike said, flipping on the screen behind him. "We know you've already figured out how to communicate with each other, and that you have a photographic memory but you can do so much more than that."
My gaze flickered to Ty who didn't seem to be paying attention to the lesson at all. I rolled my eyes even though he couldn't see me. Turning my attention back to Mike, something caught my eye.
Anton had his arm draped over Hannah's shoulder pulling her closer into him. I shuddered in disgust. I hated the feeling of being trapped. I wanted to save Hannah from Anton. She'd only get hurt because of him and I knew that. But, it didn't matter what I knew, I couldn't say anything about it.
Mike continued with the lesson. "Your minds, along with the chips, are very advanced and intricate. We would not have put so much time, money, and effort into the experiment if all we were working towards was a photographic memory. One of the first things your chip was designed to do was connect to other electronic devices."
"Because of this, you're able to connect to a computer, television, or phone and gather data and information from them. You're also able to have the Internet in your head which gives you access to an infinite amount of information. If we went to a government facility, you three would be a huge threat to their secrets."
That made sense. It was one of the reasons the government would want us captured. We were the only humans on the planet who could break in and steel classified information easily.
"Also, I'm sure you have been noticing the progressive change in your sight and hearing. The chip is working to give you that ability. Soon, you'll be able to see thing hundreds of feet away as clearly as something right in front of you. You will also, in time, be able to see body heat and have x-Ray vision. Your hearing should slowly be improving. When it's completely finished, you'll be able to hear things from large distances away."
"One of the most impressive abilities you have is the ability to download data into your mind. If you downloaded a complete guide on how to play the piano, you'd instantly know how to," Mike explained.
"Wait," Ty interjected, his mouth hanging open. "You're telling me that if I downloaded how to speak Spanish right now I'd instantly know how to speak the language?"
Mike grinned and nodded. "That is exactly what I am saying."
"Wow, that's amazing. I wish I had that kind of brain." Hannah joked.
"We are working towards being able to implant chips in adults, but we've found that the chip doesn't function properly unless it develops along with the person as they grow up," Mike informed.
"So has Anton learned to control all of his abilities?" Ty asked an edge of bitterness to his voice although I wasn't sure why.
"Um, no. Not even close," Mike scoffed which earned him a glare from Anton. "Anton has just recently began learning how to communicate with you guys mentally."
I nodded in understanding but what Mike had said didn't add up.
"Mike are we able to read each other's minds even when the other person doesn't allow them to?" I asked.
Mike raised an eyebrow in question as he sat down behind the desk. He ran a hand over his shiny head. "No, you can not. Because your chips are connected we made it possible for you to turn the connection off and on so to speak. Basically, you can control who is hearing your thoughts."
Anton turned his head shooting a glare at me with his swampy green eyes. My eyebrows knit together in confusion. Anton had known what I was thinking on several occasions, and I hadn't allowed him to.
"Alright guys, class dismissed. See you tomorrow morning." Mike said. "We will be learning how to control some of the abilities we talked about today."
I almost jumped out of my seat. I was so happy to get out of the classroom. My stomach was growling at me, begging for food. We filed out of the room and into the lobby. Ty sidled up next to me, Hannah falling into step at my other side.
"So do you guys want to get lunch at the restaurant?" Hannah suggested.
"Sure. Where is Anton?" I asked hesitantly. I didn't want to raise suspicion, but I obviously didn't trust him and didn't feel comfortable not knowing where he was.
Hannah shrugged. "He said he wasn't feeling great and that he had some chores to do so he went up to his room." I nodded, feeling a little less anxious.
"So Ty are you coming?" Hannah asked. Ty glanced my way and shook his head.
"No, I'm going to take a nap." He snapped, turning away from us and storming down the hallway into his bedroom.
A part of me was begging to explain what had happened with Kyran yesterday. But, another part of me was furious. How could Ty have so little trust in me? He had just immediately assumed the worse in what I was doing. And honestly, I didn't feel the need to apologize.
Hannah nudged me with her shoulder. "What's up with Ty? He's grumpy—er than usual."
I chuckled at Hannah. She was right though, Ty was in a way worse mood today than usual. "We got into an argument."
"What about?"
I sighed, suddenly feeling extremely tired. "He saw me sitting and talking with Kyran and then we were sort of cuddling when he found us. I was crying and Kyran was just trying to cheer me up as a friend but Ty didn't see it that way."
Hannah gave me a quizzical look. "Why weren't you talking to Ty or I about it?"
"It's complicated. I never actually told Kyran what was wrong, I just told him something was wrong."
Hannah nodded, still looking puzzled but not pressing the matter. I was thankful for that. We climbed the stairs up to the restaurant. A few dining tables were scattered about the room. Hannah and I took one table in the back corner where it was quiet.
A woman in an apron came out with two sets of silver wear rolled in red napkins. She set them on the table along with two glasses of water.
"Hey, my name is Tina. You must be Rebecca and Hannah?" She chirped.
"Yup, that's us!" Hannah smiled up at the waitress.
"Alright what can I get for you?"
"Do you have chicken noodle soup?" I asked. Tina nodded and then turned to face Hannah.
"I'll have a cheeseburger with everything on it," she said.
Tina nodded again before shooting us a bright smile and scurrying back into the kitchen. Just a few minutes later she came back with a tray holding our food. We thanked her before digging into the amazing meals.
When Hannah was finished she leaned back in her seat, tucking a blond strand behind her ear. "Wow! That was the best burger I've ever had."
I grinned, slurping the last of the soup from the bowl. "They have a good—" I was cut off. Ty's voice filled my ears.
I'm having an episode. In my room. Come please.
"What? What's wrong?" Hannah sensed the worry in me.
"Ty is having an episode. We have to go!" I exclaimed.
Hannah and I jumped up from our seats and rushed out of the room and down the hallway. Ty's room door was wide open, Bert, Whitney, and Anton inside hovering over Ty. I rushed inside, Hannah right behind me.
Ty lay on the floor writhing in pain. His whole body shook and thrashed around. Bert knelt down and cut open Ty's shirt. He attached a few stickers to his chest and temples while holding a computer in his hand. Ty's vitals popped up on the screen along with some other pictures and numbers I didn't understand.
I'm here Ty, I'm here. What's wrong? How bad is this one?
Ty didn't respond for a few seconds.
Ty answer me please.
It's worse, Rebecca. So much worse. Please tell them, to make it stop.
"Bert, Ty said this one was way worse. Can you fix it? Can you stop it?"
Bert was staring down at the bright screen his face contorted in confusion and shock. "Uh, yes I can fix it. His chip, it got h-hacked!"
"What? How? We have those chips protected so well that not even the government trained hackers and coders could get into them," Whitney said.
Bert shook his head. "I know that. I don't know who could do this but I'll figure out. For now I'll give Ty a sedative to pull him out of the episode, but it will knock him out for a few hours."
We all nodded in agreement. My eyes flickered up to Anton who was acting like he was worried about Ty, but now, I could see the sadistic pleasure in his eyes. It took everything in me to hold back from exposing Anton.
Did he hack Ty's chip? Could he?
