Chapter Thirty One: Midnight Meeting

Bang. Bang. Bang.

I tossed and turned in bed, the covers tangling around my bare legs. There was another loud bang, this one causing me to bury my head underneath the pillow I was using. It was two in the morning. Who was making all this noise? Was I dreaming?

Bang. Bang. Bang.

"Rebecca open up! It's Hannah. We might have figured out where Matthew is being held!"

My eyes shot open, any trace of weariness gone. I shot up scrambling out of bed but the covers were tightly wound around my legs. I rolled off my bed falling on my face.

"Owe," I muttered to myself, but then shouted, "I'm coming!"

After unwrapping the white sheets from my legs I stood, straightening out my pajama short and gray t-shirt. I slipped my feet into a pair of fluffy slippers and scuffled across the wood floors.

I swung open the door. Hannah, Bert, and Whitney stood in front of the doorway. Under the circumstances, it probably was inappropriate to laugh, but I couldn't help myself. Hannah's blond hair was tangled around a hairband, dark circles shadowed her eyes and she was wearing an Olaf onesie.

Bert's gray colored hair was sticking out in every direction. He was in a pair of boxer shorts and a t-shirt. It was strange seeing him in something besides a lab coat or dress pants. Whitney was put together as usual. Her blond hair was slicked back into a ponytail and she wore a tan pencil skirt and green blouse. In fact, it looked like she had never gone to sleep.

Hannah gave be a weird look, rolling her eyes. "Took you long enough," she muttered.

"Where's Ty?" I asked, ignoring Hannah's statement.

Bert grinned slightly. "Yeah, we don't want to die early so we thought we'd give you the honor of waking up Ty."

I rolled my eyes at them but nodded. "Meet you in the conference room in five?"

"Sure." The three turned, walking down the hall together. I knocked on the door to Ty's room.

Ty wake up. It's important.

From inside the room I heard a muffled groan and footsteps. Soon after the door clicked open and Ty stepped out. His own dark hair was messy, but when was it not? He was wearing a pair of blue jeans and a tight fitting black shirt.

Ty grinned down at me, pulling me into a hug. "What's so important?" He asked, his voice still scruffy and groggy.

"We may have found Matthew. The others are in the conference room."

"Even Anton?"

I shook my head. "No, I haven't seen him since dinner the other night. You?"

He shook his head and took my hand in his. We started towards the conference room, which was only a few minutes away.  Bert, Whitney, and Hannah were all sitting down discussing something.

"Does she just wake up looking like the president of the United States, or what?" Ty muttered to himself. I laughed loudly causing three heads to turn in our direction. Ty and I looked back at them sheepishly, taking our seats on the left side of the room.

"Where is Kyran?" I asked.

Hannah shrugged in response. "We couldn't find him, but that's not important right now."

"When Bert told me about the silo I realized who kidnapped Matthew and has Anton under her control," Whitney blurted out, her voice slightly strained.

"Her?"

Whitney nodded. She took in a deep breath and rubbed her eyes with the palms of her hands. "We haven't been completely honest with you guys."

"Figures," Ty muttered. I punched him in the shoulder but he didn't seem to be affected by it. Whitney dismissed Ty with a sigh.

"We didn't want to lie to you guys, but at the time we didn't think this information was important. When I was in high school I was best friends with Bert's sister. We were practically inseparable. She loved science just as much as Bert and I, and together we worked on experiments. Our biggest experiment was of course you and the chips."

"But in college Natalie and I started to like the same guy. It drove this wedge between us and when the guy asked me to marry him, our friendship just shattered. She was devastated and depressed, but I married the guy and we had Kyran."

"Bert and I continued our research without Natalie and that just made everything worse because she had been such a big part of the experiment before everything happened. A couple years later Natalie got pregnant with Anton, and the father wanted nothing to do with her and Anton. That sent Natalie over the edge and she had a complete mental breakdown."

"She gave up Anton to Bert, and just disappeared. That was around the same time you and Ty were born and Bert and I began dating. Bert and I got married, and raised Anton," Whitney finished her story.

"So what does this have to do with Matthew? Or the silo?" I asked.

"When Bert, Natalie, and I were in high school we didn't have a fancy building or lab, so we used an abandoned old silo for our experiments and research. Natalie is the only other person who knows about you, Ty, and Anton. And, she is the only person who knows about the silo."

I blinked a few times, all the information processing in my mind. It was a lot to take in. Ty was the first to speak up.

"Where is the silo?" He asked.

"Back in California, just outside of Redding," Bert replied.

"Well then what are we waiting for? Let's go." I stood up, heading towards the door. Bert chuckled at my ambition but stopped me.

"I'm way ahead of you there Reb. First thing in the morning we will ride the ATVs out a mile where I have two helicopters waiting for us. They'll take us straight to Redding," he explained. "But before that, we all need to get a little more sleep."

I reluctantly agreed after a little persuasion from Hannah. We were all about to leave the room when Kyran stumbled in gasping for breath, clutching his stomach. My breath hitched in my throat as I took in Kyran's appearance.

A gash just a half an inch above his left eyebrow was bleeding and his left eye was already bruising. His lip was busted open and he looked like he was having a difficult time breathing.

"Kyran!" I shouted, running over to him and pulling him over to one of the chairs. Hannah nearly gagged, running out of the room at the sight of blood. Ty came to my side and helped Kyran settle in the chair.

Whitney looked stunned, just staring at her beaten son. "Whitney," I yelled. She snapped out of her daze and launched into action, scooping a first aid kit out of a drawer.

"Honey, what's your name?" She asked her son, most likely looking for any sign of a major concussion.

"Kyran."

Whitney nodded. "Good," she said in a soothing voice. "What happened Kyran?"

"I-I don't know. Anton he c—came at me and I tried to defend myself but he—he injected me with something and I woke up like this in the pool room."

"It's okay Ky, it's okay," Whitney soothed. She rubbed her hand gently up and down his arm until he hissed in pain. Whitney lifted the sleeve of Kyran's shirt, revealing a large deep purple bruise.

"What hurts the most Kyran?" I asked. His brown eyes flickered around the room until he place the voice as mine.

"Rebecca," he breathed, holding his arms out for a hug. I wrapped my arm around him gently. I felt him wince but he hugged me back. Out of the corner of my eye I noticed Ty eyeing us carefully, slightly tense.

"Answer my question Kyran," I demanded as I let go of him.

"My jaw and side."

Whitney nodded, getting to work on cleaning up his forehead and lip. She then inspected his ribs and wrapped them. "I don't think anything is broken. You might have a couple cracked ribs but nothing major. You have a minor concussion, but nothing to be worried about. Just take it easy hun," she announced.

We all blew out a sigh of relief, knowing that Kyran was okay. Bert cleared his throat, standing a few feet away from me. "Alright everybody, we have a big day tomorrow. Let's get some rest."

All six of us nodded in agreement, parting ways for the time being. Now the challenge was going to be getting to sleep.
