Chapter Thirteen: Mysterious Messages

"K-kayak?" Ty raised his eyebrows.

Anton grinned. "Yup, kayak!"

Ty gulped, "Couldn't we take a boat or a road?"

"Nope." Anton shook his head. "We don't have a boat and there isn't a road. You have to kayak down the river to get to where my uncles place is."

"Why is your uncles place so hidden?" I asked him.

"Well, my uncle is in hiding so we figured he'd need a place that's hidden," Anton replied with a 'duh' tone.

I narrowed my eyes at him. "Why is he in hiding?"

"He will explain everything to you once we get there."

I sighed but didn't press the matter. Anton announced that he was going to make lunch and Hannah had agreed to help him. I plopped down on the old couch and Ty sat beside me on the other cushion.

I don't trust Anton. I heard Ty's voice in my head.

Why not?

I just don't.

Well that's a good reason.

I don't need a reason.

Whatever. I sighed.

A few minutes later Anton and Hannah came back, each holding two plates. I grabbed one from Hannah helping her to set them down. The two of them had made club sandwiches and chocolate milk. My stomach growled at the sight, greedily wanting the food.

Anton told us he was going to grab some chairs before disappearing into the closed off room. A minute later he came back through the door, hauling a beanbag and folding chair along with him. Ty just stared at him, a confident smirk resting on his usual stone cold face.

I rolled my eyes at him. He was probably enjoying watching Anton struggle with the chairs because he knew he could easily lift the both of them.

Go help him you jerk!

I've been called worse. Ty shrugged.

Yeah, well I happen to be a nice person so I'll stick with jerk. Seriously though, go help him!

Why?

I shot Ty a death glare and he sighed in surrender. He stood and took the chair from Anton, setting it down for Hannah. Once we'd all sat down around a small coffee table I dug into my food.

"This is so good," I mumbled through a mouthful of ham.

Anton and Hannah grinned in response. Ty just ate without a word, being the usual idiot he is. He seemed particularly off today, but how was I to know. I'd known the guy for a week. That being said, I could feel a certain amount of anger radiating off of him. I suppose it wasn't actually radiating but I could feel his anger and tension. I think Hannah knew too, even though she couldn't actually feel his emotions.

"So when do we start this trip to your uncles?" Hannah finally asked, breaking the forever long silence between the four of us.

"Tomorrow morning. It's a long trip so we will start early." Anton said. "You guys can stay here and in a camper I have parked in back."

"Sounds good," I chirped.

****

Hannah and I claimed the bed in the cabin while Anton and Ty slept out back in the camper. We had packed small backpacks full with the necessities for the trip to Dr. Belford's. All three of us were leaving our suitcases at the cabin until we got back. I had made sure to bring my journal and picture, tucking them in a water proof pocket. Hannah lay beside me on her back, her eyes staring at the white ceiling.

"What is it like?" She whispered into the silent night air surrounding us.

"What do you mean?"

"What's it like to have a photographic memory, to be able to see through walls, to communicate with Ty and Anton?"

I sighed. "It's great in ways. I get great grades in school. I can have secret conversations. I would be the worlds best spy. But, it has its cons too."

"Like what?" Hannah inquired.

"I have the clear picture of Jack screaming at Matthew and throwing that vase at him. It's burned into my mind, and I can never forget that memory. I will remember the conversation that night Matthew left. I know it word for word, and I always will. I can't ever escape into my own mind because it's penetrated by thoughts of other people. It's like a never ending movie of my past, that constantly runs through my mind," I said truthfully.

Hannah was silent for a while before saying, "You don't have any other special  abilities you haven't told me about do you?" She joked.

"Actually, my senses have been super weird lately."

"Senses?"

I nodded. "Yeah. I can pick out every single sound and smell. I can see for miles, and I can see in the dark, but only for a short period of time off and on. It comes and goes."

"That's so strange," Hannah said. "I wish I had a chip."

"Why?"

"I can't remember Matthew like you. His image isn't picture perfect. He's a blur of memories that can't be pin pointed. I don't know. I mean, I'm the odd one out. You and Ty sit and have secret conversations while I'm just left out. And now Anton has a chip too!" She admitted.

"Hannah, your my sister. You're my best friend. You won't be left out of anything. I promise you'll be the first to know everything. No one else knows about my sense, but you do. And Ty and I don't have conversations, we have arguments. You don't miss out on anything, trust me! Besides, I think Anton has a crush on you so you sure won't be left out in that area!"

"He does not!" Hannah gasped and I laughed at her.

"Yes, he does!"

Hannah crossed her arms over her chest. "Well, I think Ty has a crush on you!"

"Now your just making things up!" I accused.

"I am not!" Hannah defended her self.

"Whatever," I sighed. "Goodnight Hannah."

I heard her mumble something under her breath and huff in defeat but soon I fell asleep.

****
I woke to Anton banging two pots above my head. I slapped him.

"Ow! What was that for?"

"Being and idiot," I deadpanned.

Anton rubbed his red cheek and dropped the pans on the ground. I grabbed my phone off the table and checked the messages. There was one knew message.

Unknown Number

Chains hold him, he fights for you. He's held back, but by who?

A shiver slithered down my spine. The message was so weird. It was cryptic, like the person sending the messages was playing a sick game. They wanted me to figure out the riddle.

"What is it?" Hannah asked, rubbing her tired silver eyes. I showed her the message and her eyebrows furrowed in confusion.

"What going on?" Anton question, coming to stand by me.

"Someone has been sending Hannah and I strange messages, but we don't know who."

"Have you tried tracking the number?" Anton asked.

"I don't know how," I answered truthfully.

"Rebecca, we have a connection to electronics. Dr. Belford has taught me how to get into electronics with my mind and track things. I can try with your message if you'd like." I nodded and handed him my phone.

Anton placed his hand around the entire phone making sure his pinky was covering the openings. He closed he eyes and for a few minutes was silent, but he looked like he was in deep thought. Finally, he opened his eyes and dropped the phone to his side.

"What did you find?" I asked him eagerly.

Anton shook his head and closed his eyes again. We waited for a few more minutes before Anton tossed my phone on the bed and plopped down in a chair, a frustrated expression resting in his usual lighthearted features.

"What's wrong?" Hannah and I both asked.

"I don't know, I've never had this happen before. I can't hack into the system and trace the message. Whoever sent them knows what they're doing," Anton admitted.

My heart dropped. Well, there is just another mystery to add to the long list of unexplainable things happening in my life.
