Chapter Sixteen: Beth and Robin

My eyes felt heavy, like they were glued shut but I forced myself to open them and quickly realized I was staring down at the dirt ground. Rubbing my eyes with the palms of my hands, I rolled on to my back and tried sitting up but I was held down by a heavy weight across my stomach.

I raised my eyebrows and looked down at my waist noticing a tan muscular arm draped across my torso. Following the arm I realized it belonged to a snoring Ty. I groaned and attempted to sit up again but Ty's grip tightened, pulling me closer to his chest. I sighed in annoyance and picked his arm up, placing it to the side of me.

Someone chuckled, startling me. I whipped my head around and was met with a mop of fiery red hair and bright green eyes. Anton grinned at me. He was sitting on a rock with a water bottle in his hand.

"Oh it's just you," I said in relief.

Anton frowned, placing a hand over his chest. "Just me. Wow, that hurts." I rolled my eyes at him and stood, brushing off the dirt from my shorts. I looked beside me, realizing Hannah's sleeping bag had been rolled up and stuffed back into her backpack.

"Where's Hannah?" I asked.

"I'm right here!" Hannah's chirpy voice said behind me. I turned to see my sister coming towards me, a pile of wood in her hands. Her blond hair was tied up in a messy bun on the top of her head. She smiled at me brightly. I was glad she was feeling better. Lately she hadn't been herself, but that was understandable due to circumstances. It was felt good to hear the enthusiasm in her voice again.

"It's chilly this morning. I thought we could use a fire." I nodded in agreement with Hannah.

"I'll go start the fire." Anton took the wood from Hannah's arms.

"Great! Hannah, do you want to take a walk with me?" I asked. Hannah nodded and walked beside me.

"So, you and Anton?"

Hannah smiled sheepishly which made me grin. "What about us?"

"You know exactly what I mean. What's going on between you two?" I asked.

"I don't know. Last night we had a really long conversation and then right before we headed back to the camp sight he told me he liked me. He said that he thought I was beautiful and had an amazing personality. Somehow we ended up holding hands on the way back," Hannah admitted.

"I do believe someone told you he liked you."

Hannah gave me a mock glare that said shut up. "I know! I know! You were right, I was—less right."

I chuckled. "So, do you like him too?"

Hannah nodded in response. "Are you guys a couple?" I asked.

"No. I just met him three days ago. I guess we clicked really well and he is so easy to talk to, but for now we will just wait it out," Hannah answered as we came back to the camp sight. We were only twenty feet away from the guys when Anton ran towards us.

"Guys! Guys! Thank goodness you're back!" He exclaimed, eyes wide in horror.

"Why? What's wrong?" Hannah and I asked.

"It's Ty. Something is wrong!" Anton pointed towards Ty who was leaned up against the trunk of a tree, clutching his side and emptying his stomach of the little food that he'd had yesterday.

I ran over to him, kneeling down. Beads of sweat were dripping down his face and he was gasping for breath.

Ty what's wrong? I asked him mentally. I received no response.

"Please! Please! Please go away! Beth, please don't make me go with him!" Ty cried out. I gripped Ty's shoulder and shook him which only made things worse. He lashed out at me, thrashing around and trying to get away.

"No! Robin get away from me! Please don't! Let go of me! Let me go!" Ty screamed out. I shook his shoulders gently.

Ty look at me. This is Rebecca. Look at me and tell me what's wrong. Ty look me in the eyes.

Ty's deep blue eyes flickered over to my face, his face full of confusion. I felt his shoulders relax and he stopped thrashing around. The flailing had been replaced my shaking and shivering. I handed him a bottle of water and forced him to drink it even though he stubbornly refused it at first. After a few minutes he'd calmed down a little.

H-he was here. He was going to take me and she was going to let him! He found me. Rebecca please don't let him take me. I don't ever want to go back there.

Ty, who was here?

Robin! Robin was going to take me!

I sighed in exasperation and placed my hand on his forehead.

"Ty! You're burning up! Crap!" I exclaimed. Ty seemed genuinely confused about the situation, but didn't ask anything. Instead he began to close his eyes but I gently slapped his cheek and his eyes shot open again.

"I've got to check your stomach, okay?"  I lifted Ty's shirt and knew immediately it was infected. I touched the skin around his wound and it was unusually warm with puss seeping out. A few of his stitches had tore and he was bleeding again but it was nothing a bandage couldn't temporarily fix.

"Rebecca what's wrong?" Hannah asked cautiously.

I ran a hand through my wavy brown hair and sighed. "The gash in his stomach is infected. He has a high fever which must be causing him to hallucinate."

Anton mumbled something under his breath. "What do we do?"

Ty's eyes were slowly closing again. I tapped his cheek and his eyes opened, glinting in confusion. I gave him a reassuring smile. "We need to get his wound cleaned up and bandaged so bring me the first aid kit. We really need to get his fever down. Hannah could you grab a bucket and fill it with cold water from the creek?"

Hannah quickly nodded before scurrying off with a small bucket. Anton returned with the first aid kit. I opened it and found a antibiotic cream, bandages, and a package of small disinfectant wipes.

"Ty how are you?" I asked, waiting to see if he was mentally aware of his surroundings now.

He blinked at me mumbling incoherently under his breath. I sighed but didn't ask again knowing it wouldn't get me anywhere.

"Ty your cut is infected so I have to clean it. It is going to hurt okay?" Ty nodded sleepily at me, giving me permission to clean his wound. I took one of the disinfectant wipes and cleaned the dirt and blood away from the cut being careful to not hurt Ty anymore. Every once in a while he'd wince but it would pass. I then poured water across his stomach, washing the skin and wound and gently rubbed antibiotic cream on the wound. He tried to pull away while I did that, groaning in pain. When I finished that I wrapped a wide section of bandage around his abdomen, securing it tightly.

"I'm done!" I announced, helping Ty sit up against the tree.

"Um, I'm going to go help Hannah bring the water back!" Anton headed into the woods in the same direction as Hannah had a few minutes before. I scooted up against the tree and sat beside Ty. He was sitting, one hand holding his stomach while his eyes rested on the sky in deep thought.

We sat in silence for a few minutes until Ty spoke. "He was here Rebecca. Robin was here. He found me again!"

I turned my head to look at Ty. I could feel his fear and anger. "Who is Robin?"

"A disgusting man. A man I hope to never see again," Ty said bluntly.

"I know a guy like that," I answered softly. "But Robin wasn't really here Ty. It was just a hallucination. You're safe."

Ty scoffed bitterly. "I'm not safe. I've never been safe. I'm dying Rebecca, you and I both know that."

"You are not going to dye. We will find a cure."

He didn't press the matter, instead he leaned back and closed his eyes. Anton and Hannah were headed back. Anton held a bucket of water while the two of them talked, each wearing shy smiles on their faces. I grinned at them as they approached from a hundred feet away.

"I don't trust that guy. He's bad news. He is just going to hurt Hannah," Ty mumbled.

"You don't trust anyone. Anton is a nice guy." I scolded Ty who just shook his head in response.

Anton and Hannah approached us and set down the bucket of water. I thanked them before grabbing a cloth from the bag and wetting it down. I draped the wet white rag over Ty's forehead and told him to get a few hours of sleep before we left for rock climbing. Ty happily complied, laying back down in his sleeping bag.

When Ty was asleep Hannah asked me, "Will Ty be okay?"

"Uh yeah. If we can get his fever down and keep his wound clean. But, he needs proper medical attention soon. If we can get him to Dr. Belford he should be fine."

Hannah nodded before we sat down around the fire and pulled out a few granola bars for breakfast. Hannah was telling me about the creek but I couldn't focus on her. My thoughts all occupied on Ty.
