Chapter Eleven: Steel Death Traps

Ty insisted on driving, even though we were taking my car. I don't know why, but he had to be in charge. I think it's something about proving himself masculine and keeping his 'bad boy' attitude after the kitchen incident. Just thinking about it sent me into a hysteric fit of laughter.

"What are you laughing about?" Ty demanded.

I smirked. "You."

Ty's lips tipped downward into a harsh pout, which only made me laugh harder. "You better not tell anyone."

"Hah," Hannah scoffed. "That's funny. Not tell anyone? You jokester you."

"I'm serious. You'll be sorry!" Ty growled. Hannah shrugged and backed off.

"We have been driving forever! How much longer?" I whined. My back ached and the car was hot and stuffy. All three of us were crammed into my car along with our suitcases. I sat in the passenger seat beside Ty, while Hannah sat in back. She was pressed against a pile of suitcases and backpacks.

"Five hours."

The car rolled to a stop in the parking lot, the headlights illuminating a maroon red sign.

"Tucker's Inn." Ty said. "Okay, well we're here. This is our stop."

We breathed a sigh of relief and hopped out of the car, stretching our legs and sore muscles. I dragged my bags out from the trunk of the car and hauled them up to the hotel. A row of lights flickered above the receptionist desk and below it was a young guy, maybe nineteen or twenty. Dark bags shadowed his green eyes and his light brown hair was tousled in a mess, like he'd just woken up.

"Hello and welcome to Tucker's Inn. My name is Benjamin. How may I be of service?" The receptionist asked. His voice was cheery and bright, which was surprising considering he looked like he hadn't slept in a week.

"We need two rooms. One room with a single bed and the other with two," I answered him, dropping my luggage by my feet. Ty came in with a trolley and loaded all of our luggage on top of it.

"Right, okay. Can I see some identification?"

I pulled my drivers license out and showed it to him. He nodded approvingly. Benjamin tapped away at his computer for a few minutes and then looked up through his black, square framed glasses with a toothy grin. The light shone on his face. A small amount of acne dotted his forehead and the slightest hint of a beard could be spotted on his chin. He was an attractive guy, with a geeky feeling about him.

"Okay, you're in room 213 and I'm assuming he will be in the other room, 214." Benjamin handed us two white key cards with a red strip across them. We thanked him before filing into the elevator. We squished into the small space along with the trolley.

My heart thumped against my ribcage. I hated elevators. Absolutely hated them. And unfortunately my fear was so strong that Ty could feel my fear. I could tell by the way he was silently staring at me, smirking to himself.

You okay over there? He asked.

I'm fine.

Are you afraid of elevators?

No! Ty gave me an accusing look. Okay maybe, but everyone has fears. Even you, so who cares.

Ty shrugged. Whatever.

"Are you guys talking again?"'Hannah accused.

"No. We aren't talking anymore," I snapped. Hannah raised an eyebrow but dropped it as the door slid open. We dragged ourselves into the carpeted hallway that smelt of coffee and chlorine. We were the first door on the right and Ty was the first on the left.

The rooms were fairly nice. A cream color coated the walls and two large paintings of a mountain landscape hung above each bed. The beds were covered in a dark brown quilt and an abundance of yellow and red pillows were piled against a wooden headboard.

I dropped my suitcases beside my bed and pulled out a pair of sweat shorts and a cream tank top before making my way to the bathroom. I slipped into the shower, the hot water soothing my aching muscles. When I finished I brushed out my long brown locks and tied my hair back in a French braid.

When I left the bathroom Hannah was sitting on the bed, her back faced to me, staring out the window. We had a beautiful view. The sun had just sunk below the mountain leaving a bright orange sky in its wake. The mountain was like something I'd never seen before, towering over everything in existence around it. It's dark silhouette stood out against the orange and red tinted sky.

Hannah was gazing out the window, her knees pulled up to her chest and arms wrapped around them. She rested her chin on her knees and as I approached I could see a single tear slipping down her cheek. I sat beside her, already feeling my own eyes well up with tears.

"I'm scared Rebecca," she whispered. "What if Matthew never comes back? What if Jack hurts him again, or files a restraining order? What if Ty dies before we can find Doctor Belford?"

I leaned forward resting my chin in my palms. "I don't know Rebecca. I'm scared too, but I can't think about the what ifs. We can't think about the what ifs. We will see Matthew again. We have to." I trailed off leaving the both of us in a comfortable silence.

I don't know how long we sat there in thought, but when I finally stood to go to bed the clock read 3:15 AM. I stumbled over to my bed and slipped underneath the covers, eagerly letting sleep overtake my tired eyes.

****

Wake up! Wake up! Wake up! Wake up! Unlock your door Ty. It's me Rebecca. Well of course it is because  who else could be talking to you in your mind. Duh. Why is he still sleeping? What is he doing? Maybe he's  taking a shower. Oh this would be weird. Seriously Ty, wake up! Are you alive? Your worse of a morning person than I am and that's saying something. Wake up!

There was a thump against the door.

Rebecca shut up! I'm coming!

After hearing a click the door swung open with Ty standing behind it wearing shorts and a white t-shirt. His dark black hair was messily strewn about every which way and his eyes were barely open.

"What?" He croaked.

"We've got to get a move on! We don't have all day." I announced, pointing to my bare wrist for emphasis.

"Actually we do," Ty countered. "By the way, don't ever wake me up like that again."

"Fine, but trust me, I'll find other ways to wake you up. Maybe I'll have to pour a bucket of ice water on your head, I could just throw you off the bed into the wall, or I could hire a marching ban-"

"Shut up!" Ty snapped. I grinned cheekily at him.

"Hey, if you want to sleep in it won't bother me. It's your life on the line here." I said, throwing my hands up in defense.

Ty's eyes narrowed and his jaw tightened. "I'm up," he grunted before slamming the door in my face. Okay then. I went back to my room and slipped into a pair of black skinny jeans and a ruby red v-neck short sleeve shirt. I pulled on black one inch heel boots that ended just below my knee, and took out my braid letting my long brown hair fall in soft waves around my face. I quickly applied a little mascara and eyeliner just before there was knock on the door.

Hannah was ready to go, sitting on the couch and watching some Nickelodeon cartoons. I answered the door and Ty stood in the doorway. He had thrown on a navy blue flannel over his white t-shirt and he wore black jeans. His hair was only slightly tamer than when I seen him earlier. He might have ran a comb through it.  He looked cleaner but his face suggested that he was still only half awake and extremely angry at me for waking him up.

"Let's get breakfast," Ty grumbled. Hannah and I happily agreed. Hannah jumped out of the chair she was sitting in and rushed out the door. My stomach twisted and grumbled loudly. It was time for waffles.

The three of us slipped back into the elevator. My heart pound and by breath was quick and choppy. I grabbed the handrail, clutching onto it for dear life. I squeezed my eyes tightly shut as the elevators automatic door slid closed. We started dropping, my stomach flopped and I felt like I was  about to throw it up, it was so close to my throat. Thankfully though, a minute later a ding that sounded heavenly signaled that we had arrived at the bottom floor.

My knuckles were white and palms were slick with sweat. I looked over to Ty and Hannah who were staring at me intently, amused expressions resting on their faces. I blushed, and silently scolded my self for being embarrassed.

"Wow, I'd hate to see you ride roller coasters," Ty chuckled.

"I'm fine with roller coasters, it's just elevators I'm afraid of," I retorted. I crossed my arms over my chest and shifted my weight to my right leg.

"Oh that makes sense. You're afraid of elevators but not roller coasters. Logical." Ty mused.

"It is logical. Elevators are steel death traps!" I rushed out into the hallway, getting away from the 'death trap.'

Hannah burst out laughing at my choice of words while Ty just stood in front of the coffee machines with a smug look.

"Whatever!" I exclaimed. "Hannah can't laugh because she's afraid of forks and I know you have a stupid fear too Ty!" I stomped of to the kitchen childishly, but not before sticking my tongue out at them.
