Chapter 5
Hiccup's POV
It's been a week since our battle with Drago. I've been consumed with the responsibilities of being chief of Berk. Now I see why dad was always so tired after he got home everyday. It was sunset now, so it was time for me to go home. I walked through the town square. I looked over at my fathers statue. I faced it for about a minute, then walked to Toothless. Everyday he sits at the feet of the statue for 5 minutes.
"Come on Toothless it's time to go home." He gave a grumble and walked towards the house.
I know how he feels though. If I hadn't tried to reason with Drago my father would still be here. I walked back towards the house and opened the front door.
"Welcome home Hiccup. Nice to see you made it back before dark." Astrid teased as soon as I plopped into my chair.
"Haha very funny. I don't know how dad handled all this. First I had to stop the twins from yak tipping in Sven's farm, then I had to help Bucket and Mulch with a dragon problem, bring in fishing boats and load the fish into the storage house, and then catch sheep that escaped from the barn." I said as I drank the glass of water Astrid brought me.
"Sounds tough. You gonna be able to handle it?"
"If I'm anything like my father then yes."
"By the way Gobber wanted to see you about something. He didn't tell me what though."
"Great I'll add it to the list of things to of tomorrow."
"He said as soon as you get home. He said meet at the forge." I sighed and walked to the forge. Ugh my foot hurts from walking so much. I got to the forge and it was completely dark. I lit the fire just so I could see where I'm going. I tuned around and ran right into Gobber.
"Wow no need to be sneaky Gobber." I said as I picked myself up from the floor.
"Sorry Hiccup. But I had to give you something." He said and pulled out a large book. "It's the history of all the chiefs of nearby islands. Since you'll be going to your first meeting next week you should know who to trust and who to not trust."
"Wait I have a meeting next week?" I asked and grabbed the book. "When were you going to tell me about this?"
"Today. You'll have to leave on Tuesday of next week it's a 1 day boat trip."
"Gobber we have dragons." I reminded.
"Right sorry. I already told everybody about Toothless and they're okay with him being there. Still you should leave on Tuesday though."
"Alright. Wait what day is it today?"
"It's the end of Saturday."
"Alright I'll get mom to run Berk while I'm gone."
"Hey what about me?"
"Last time you tried chiefing you fixed a ship with iron and it sank, gave Bucket and Mulch bludgeons to solve a sheep payment issue, and named a baby girl Magnus."
"She looked like a Magnus Hiccup." I laughed and walked back home.
Once I got home I noticed everyone was asleep. I checked on Mercy first and saw her sleeping peacefully in her cradle, snuggling with her favorite stuffed dragon. I tiptoed in and kissed her forehead. I then shut the door quietly and checked on Astrid. She was spread out over both sides of the bed, her head on her pillow but her body on my side. I put the book on my bedside table and scooted her body over to her side.
"What did Gobber want?" She asked with her eyes still closed.
"I'll tell you about it in the morning. Right now let's just go to sleep." I kissed her cheek and climbed into bed.
-lé morning-
I woke up before Astrid and decided to make breakfast. I checked to see if Mercy was awake, and she was. She giggled when I walked in.
"Look who's awake!" I said and grabbed her for breakfast.
I carried her downstairs and put her in her chair. I went to the kitchen and grabbed her special food that Astrid makes. She makes days worth of food in advance then keeps it in the cabinets. I fed her with her favorite spoon. After she was about halfway done, Astrid came downstairs, rubbing her eyes.
"Good morning Milady." I greeted.
"Morning Hiccup." She said and kissed my cheek. She went to the kitchen and started cooking. "Nice to actually wake up to you being at home."
"Yeah it's nice to get to spend time with my two favorite girls." I said and gave Mercy another spoonful of food. "By the way I'm leaving on Tuesday I'll be back on Thursday."
"For what?"
"My very first chief meeting." I said and picked up the empty food dish.
"Oh ok. So what's that book you brought home last night?"
"The history on all the chiefs of nearby islands that will be at the meeting. I need to know who to trust and who to avoid."
"Well you better get reading mister I'll take Mercy."
"I'll read tomorrow today is family day." I picked up Mercy out of her chair.
"I appreciate the thought of family day but you still have chiefing to do."
"Then how about you come with me. It would be nice having some company other than Toothless." Toothless growled playfully. "No offense bud." He turned back to his fish.
"Sure why not I didn't have anything planned for today. Just let me get dressed." Astrid said and went upstairs. She came back down after about 5 minutes in her normal outfit. "Oh wait I'm gonna grab a blanket for Mercy it's freezing today." She went back upstairs and came back with a her favorite wool blanket. "Much better."
We walked outside and saw everybody preparing decorations on their house for Snoggletog next week. It was a little saddening that dad wasn't here to spend it with us, but as he once said, when you miss someone you love this time of year, and they can't be here for the holiday, we celebrate them. And I imagine that's exactly what he would want me to do. I let out a small sigh and continued walking.
"You okay Hiccup?" Astrid asked and placed a hand on my shoulder.
"I'll be fine."
"Hiccup glad I caught you there's a dragon fight at Bucket and Mulch's farm." A villager said.
"Thanks for telling me. I'll be right back Astrid. How about you help Gobber with some decorations and I'll meet you back here?" She nodded and I flew off.
I flew over Bucket and Mulch's farm and saw a Nadder and a Nightmare fighting. I landed and got in front of the Nadder while Toothless got in front of the Nightmare. I herded the Nadder back while Toothless did the same to the Nightmare.
"Ah thanks Hiccup. Usually I can get those two separated but today was just not my lucky day." Mulch said.
"It's no problem Mulch. Where's Bucket?"
"He's milking the yak. Or at least I think he is. He could be trying to milk the chicken again."
"Well I would find him before we have milk from chickens and eggs from yaks." I hopped on toothless and flew back the square where I saw Astrid decorating the giant tree with Gobber.
"How was the dragon fight?"
"Eh just your average dragon fight. It's taken care of now though. How's decorations going?"
"Going great actually. How's it look?" I looked up at the tree which was covered in decorative shields. "We saved the crest for you." I grabbed the decorative crest from her hand. It was just a medium-sized piece of wood that was shaped like the Berk crest and painted black.
"Let's do something different this year."
"Oh here you go breaking traditions again. Are you trying to set a record or something?"
"Nothing wrong with a little change." I ran to the forge and grabbed my special project. This year the top of the tree will have a metal Strike Class symbol, which is a Night Fury. But I modified it so the left tail din was red. I came back and flew to the top of the tree, and placed it on top.
"Hiccup you know lightening is attracted to metal. If that thing gets struck it will burn down the whole tree." Astrid pointed out.
"I don't think we'll be getting any storms soon. And if we do I'll just temporarily take it off the tree. Easy as that." I said.
"What's next on your chief duties list?"
"Actually I don't think there is anything. Besides put the decorations on our house." I looked at Toothless's saddle clock and noticed it was already 4. "Oh man where did the time go?"
"I don't know. Come on let's head back home. I'm making Yak Nog for the holidays!" Astrid said and trotted back towards the house. My stomach gave a low grumble.
"Did I just hear that Astrid is making Yak Nog again?" Tuffnut asked as the whole gang walked up to me.
"Yeah. I'll try and fix it as much as I can but if she offers you a mug, spit it out when she isn't looking." I said and looked at Snotlout. "What's wrong with you?"
"The sound of drinking that's stuff again makes my stomach sick." He said and lightly hugged his stomach.
"Just don't swallow it and you should be fine. It might leave a bad taste in your mouth but you won't get sick this time. I promise." I said and walked back home. I really hope I can fix that stuff, she made half the villagers sick.
I got home and noticed her in the kitchen making her drink. I went upstairs and grabbed the book on the history of the chiefs of neighboring islands. I sat down at the table and began to read. This book contained information on the last 2 chiefs of all the islands plus their current chiefs. There was an island called Skye Island, and apparently they haven't been to war in over 70 years. Their chief was Neil the Negotiator. Well now I see why they haven't been to war in a while. Then there was Spout Island, known for it's many waterfalls and water spouts. Their chief was Timothy the Terrible. Apparently he was a really harsh chief and went to war almost every year. So stay away from him.
"Finally studying huh?" Astrid asked.
"Yeah. Might as well get a head start." We were interrupted by a knock on the door. I turned back to my book while Astrid answered it.
"Hiccup your mother is here to see you." She said. I lifted my face from the book. Mom stepped in and sat down. Astrid went upstairs to put Mercy in her cradle and give us time to chat.
"What's up mom?"
"I'm just here to get the things I need for chiefing for two days."
"Oh I premade the lists for you already hang on they're upstairs." I went upstairs and grabbed the papers off of my desk. "Here you go. Shouldn't be too much." She looked them over.
"Oh these are simple. I could have them all done by Wednesday."
"Well those aren't including the surprise tasks that like to show up. You'll do fine."
"Thank you Hiccup!" She said and walked out.
"What was that about?" Astrid asked as she came downstairs.
"Just giving mom the stuff she needs for chiefing. Come on let's go to bed." I said and went upstairs.
