Chapter 40
Mercy's POV
I was sitting in the Great Hall next to my dad who was talking to Gobber about the visitors and stuff that was actually incredibly boring. I looked around the Great Hall and saw Cody at another table, waving for me to come over there. I looked at my dad, who was absorbed in his conversation, picked up my plate, and slowly walked to Cody.
"Hi." He said as I sat down.
"Hey."
"What were they talking about?"
"I don't know they lost me after about 5 words. So why are you sitting all by yourself?" I questioned.
"I was eating with Ethan and Agnes but I think they left to get some rest. I don't know they just said they were calling it a night."
"I think that means they're going to sleep. I've heard my dad say it a few times."
"Alright." He said and looked down at his plate.
"You okay?"
"Yeah it's just loud in here. I can barely hear you."
"Let's go outside." I said and we both stood up and walked out the large wood doors, to the quiet and peaceful village.
"You know this is actually a wonderful time of day. It's peaceful, the sun is setting, and it just feels like Valhalla." He stated and looked at the sunset from a cliff. I walked up two steps to be at his side.
"Yeah. That view just never gets old." We both stood in silence, watching the sun slowly descend on the horizon until it was almost completely gone.
"Do you ever think about the future? Like try and guess how you're going to end up?" Cody asked.
"Occasionally. But I try to focus more on the present." I began. "They say the past is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That's why they call it the present."
"I've never heard that before."
"My grandma told it to me after I got amnesia. I don't know why."
"I mean it sounds accurate but I've never heard it." He said and glanced back to the ocean. "You think anyone else on this island knows it?"
"From what grandma told me, only her and I." I started. "And Gothi, but she doesn't talk." I finished.
"Don't forget about me."
"Well duh." I said and tapped his arm with my elbow, only to have him tap my arm with his elbow. This went on for about a minute, until we both just ended up bursting into laughter.
/~time skip~\
"Ok you have to catch it." I said with a cheerful tone.
"I'll try my best." He replied. I held the blueberry with my index finger and thumb. I tossed the blueberry slightly and he leaned up and caught it in his mouth.
"YES!" We both shouted at the same time, causing us to laugh.
"Your turn." He stated and grabbed a blueberry from the bowl.
"Wait I'm not good at this." I said.
"Too late I'm tossing the blueberry." He replied and tossed it lightly towards me. I opened my mouth and caught it in between my top and bottom teeth. "What did you mean you aren't good at this it took me like 5 minutes!"
"I honestly thought I wasn't going to catch that." I said with a smile. I heard a familiar grumble come from behind me. I turned my head and saw Toothless's head behind my shoulder. He sat up and nodded in the direction of my house. "And that's the sign my parents want me home." I said and stood up. "Meet me at the docks tomorrow I have to be down there to meet the visitors."
"Okay see you then!" He said with a dorky smile and waved as I walked off with Toothless. Well I have to admit, today was actually one of the best days I've had in a while.
/~next morning~\
"Mercy get up we have to go down to the docks!!" Mom shouted from downstairs. I groaned and lifted an eye lid.
"5 more minutes mom!" I shouted and turned over. I heard footsteps come towards my room.
"Come on, time to wake up." Dad said from my doorway, before picking me up and carrying me out the door and downstairs.
"Oh Thor dad! I'm in my pajamas!"
"I have some clothes ready for you in the bathroom. Go clean yourself up you've got 10 minutes." Mom stated.
"I swear to Odin mom if you put a skirt in those clothes I'm wearing my pajamas." I grumbled and walked in the room, seeing a neatly stacked pile of a brown vest, a dark red long tunic, black pants and a pair of brown boots. Well I'll admit, the outfit isn't bad. I quickly changed and washed my face, then walked back out.
"Alright let's go. Your father is already down there." Mom said and we walked to the docks.
/~at the docks~\
We stood at the edge of the dock for about 10 minutes until a ship came into view.
"Alright guys smiled on." Gobber said and I plastered a fake smile on my face. I would rather sleep then do this. The ship was now pulling in and people were stepping off.
"Welcome to Berk!" Dad greeted. Two families stepped off the ship. There was a big man with a dark brown beard and a helmet with short horns. A woman stood beside him with light brown hair and brown eyes, a smile was painted across her face. A girl stood next to the woman. She looked about 17 years old and had a facial expression saying 'I don't want to be here'. She had brown eyes like her mom but black hair like her dad.
"Thank you." The man spoke. He had a deep voice, but it sounded friendly. "I'm Chief David of the Akuran Tribe. Otherwise known as Shoreline Island. This is my wife Isabelle and our daughter Marlene." He explained and gestured to the women as he told is their names.
"Nice to meet you all. I'm Cheif Hiccup of Berk, of course, this is my wife Astrid and our daughter Mercy." I waved with a small smile.
"I see you have another on the way." Isabelle stated and gestured to mom.
"Yeah. Pretty soon actually." Mom answered.
"Congratulations." Isabelle stated with a smile.
"So do you talk or-?" Marlene whispered to me.
"She's been through a lot." my dad butted in. "She keeps to herself. Why don't we have Gobber escort you to where you're staying."
"Glad to. Follow me." Gobber waved his hand and they followed him like ducks. The other family began stepping off the boat, handing baskets to others on the docks.
"Wow." A little boy said in awe while looking around the island from the boat.
"Come on Jake you can't stay on the boat forever." A girl said to the boy, who's name was Jake apparently. The girl and Jake stood next to a man and a woman.
"Welcome to Berk I'm glad you could come." My dad greeted in the same cheerful tone as before. "I'm Hiccup, the chief. This is my wife Astrid and our daughter Mercy."
"Nice to meet you all. That's my wife Abby, our daughter Jade and our son Jake. I'm Tommy. Chief of Catalina Island." (You know that's actually a real place off the coast of LA. It's about an hour and a half west I think). The man introduced.
"Pleasure to meet you, and welcome to Berk. We'll lead you to the home you'll be staying in." My dad stated and began walking off with the rest of the people on the docks. I stayed behind and looked out at the sea.
"So I heard your ten." Jade said as she walked up behind me. She had long, pure black hair that reached the top of her waist. It was all down, so it flowed in the wind like a flag on the top of a mountain. Her eyes were bright green and she was small, like me.
"Yeah."I answered simply.
"You okay?"
"Yeah I'm fine." I hesitated. "I've just been through a lot."
"You know, they say yesterday is history, and tomorrow is a mystery. But today is a gift." She stated.
"That's why they call it the present." We said at the same time.
"You know that phrase?" I questioned.
"Yeah. My mom always told that to Jake when he got his night terrors. It always calmed him down. And when I was left to take care of him, that was basically all I was saying." She began. "Hey. How about you give me a tour around Berk?"
"Sure. We'll need Toothless for protection. My dad likes it when I'm guarded." I whistled twice and the happy Night Fury bounded towards us, then stopped a few feet in front.
"Wow. So this is a Night Fury." Jade said, astonished. "Can I pet him?"
"Oh of course. Let him sniff you first though." I answered. She stuck out her hand, triggering Toothless to sniff. He took a few small whiffs, then buried his head in her hand, making Jade laugh.
"How could this thing be violent? My dad always told me to kill a Night Fury if I ever had the chance but this little guy is just a big sweetheart."
"They're capable of a lot of things. But most of them, are just self defense." We began walking up the hill with Toothless by our side.
/~time skip~\
"And finally, the Great Hall. Where we eat and have celebrations for Snoggletog, visitors, my father coming home from long meetings or his little journeys, and families can use it to celebrate a birthday." I explained.
"Wow. You guys do a lot more with your Great Hall then us. We use it like some sort of camp dining hall. It's only open during breakfast, lunch and dinner times."
"Why?"
"On Catalina my dad has a strict list of jobs for people to do or else 'the island wouldn't function properly' is what he says. But I think it's all wrong. I think the island would run much smoother if we weren't assigned jobs and if we didn't fight amongst each other like animals because they agree or disagree with the chief."
"That sounds awful." I stated.
"You guys seem to have it easy." She stated and turned her back to the Great Hall doors, where laughter of Vikings erupted like a chorus. "Hey, who's that?" She asked and pointed to the statue.
"Stoick the Vast. The previous chief of Berk. One of the best chiefs in the history of the island." I explained. "He was the toughest, the bravest, and most feared leader. None of the other islands dared to mess with him." Jade looks intruiged.
"How long ago was he chief?"
"He's actually my grandpa."
"No way! You're telling me that this guy," she said and gestured to the statue. "Is the father of your dad?"
"Well yeah. That's how it works."
"But your dad and him are so, different. They're basically two different sizes."
"Yeah, my dad is small. But they weren't all that different after all."
"That's incredible." She stared at the statue intently.
"Hey I know just what to do!" I shouted. She looked at me with a puzzled look. I stood next to Toothless with my hand on the saddle. "Wanna really see Berk?"
"Can we do that?"
"Of course. My dad let's me fly with him all the time." I climbed up and held my hand down to help her up. "Come on. It'll be great."
"Okay..." She said and grabbed my hand, then hoisted herself up. "What do I hold onto?"
"The saddle or me." I stated and we glided slowly into the air. "Hold tight."
Hiccup's POV
"Oh you wouldn't believe the size of it! That thing was bigger then any dragon I've ever seen." I shouted.
"We're you afraid?" Isabelle questioned.
"Well of course but that didn't stop me." I stated.
"Seriously you will never be able to stop this kid from doing anything." Astrid sated with a few chuckles. I glanced over at her. She shrugged her shoulders and smiled.
"I wouldn't say anything, but I do get determined."
"Way too easily." Allysa said as she appeared out of nowhere with her elbow on my shoulder.
"Oh this is my sister Allysa." I introduced. She waved and smiled.
R"Well you two look nothing alike." Tommy stated.
"We aren't related but I treat him like a brother. We helped each other escape from being imprisoned."
"Wait, you're familiar." David started with a mysterious tone. "Too familiar. Marlene get over here and tell me if she's familiar." David said and waved his daughter over. She reluctantly walked over and examined Allysa.
"Yeah she is. I think I've seen you on the island." Marlene stated blandly.
"Does she bring up some bad feeling to you?" David asked her.
"Dad I think you're crazy. She's not stirring up any bad feelings." Marlene told her father.
"Where are you from?" David asked her in a low tone. Allysa backed her face away from David's curious expression.
"Oh for the love of Odin dad stop!" Marlene shouted.
"I don't think so Marlene. Because I know this girl." He said and turned back to Allysa. "Oh gods." He said in shock. "She's one of them."
"Wait of who?" Astrid asked, stepping in between them. I gently guided her aside and took her place.
"David what are you talking about?" Isabelle questioned.
"This girl. Is a Bludvist. I see it in her eyes." He said in a disgusted tone.
"That's outrageous!" Abby shouted.
"David!" Tommy shouted. "I was there when the Bludvist's attacked you. This girl didn't do anything to you." He added. "From what I remember she tried to stop Drago." That name sent shivers up my spine, giving me goosebumps all over my arms.
"She didn't do good enough!" David shouted. "Because of your father I lost both of my parents."
"What do you want me to do about it?!" Allysa snapped. "I can't change the fact that he's my father. And I can't change what he did. Do you know how badly I'm haunted by the things I saw my father do?! The people I saw him kill?! I wish everyday to go back and change it, but I can't. I'm sorry about your parents but blaming me for what he did is completely insane!" David was taken back. His body relaxed and he stepped back to his wife.
"Allysa, go find Mercy and Jade and tell them dinner is soon." I whispered. She nodded and walked away.
Jade's POV
"Oh wait you want to see something cool Jade?" Mercy shouted.
"Define cool."
"You'll see." She said and scooted off to the side of the saddle. "Now hold those and just let Toothless do what he does. He knows exactly what to do."
"Okay!" I shouted and grabbed the handle. She slid down the side of the dragon. "What?! Are you-?! Are you crazy?!" I shouted and looked over the side to look for her, when she pops out in front of the dragon. "Yep. You're crazy."
"Crazy is just the beginning of it!" She shouted and landed behind me on the dragons back. "But on Berk, you have to be crazy."
"Hey you two!" A woman shouted from a dragon next to us. It looked like another Night Fury!
"Yeah?" Mercy shouted.
"Hiccup wants you back at the Great Hall! He says dinner is soon!" The woman shouted.
"Okay thanks Allysa!" Mercy shouted and we started going down towards the land.
