Newcomers

Robin sat chatting with Peter. The school year was about to begin. Ned would be in homeroom after he unpacked. Robin couldn't wait to see Acelia again. She would be one of the two new students to the sophomore class.

"I can't wait for you and Ned to meet Acelia. She's so sweet!" Robin says. Peter smiles. Robin looks out the window for the 16th time in the last minute. "She's here!" Pulling Peter to the window, she points. "There she is!"

A dark-haired girl was walking toward the school, a sea green backpack on her shoulders. She wore an orange hoodie and dark pants. Blue converse were laced on her feet, her hair tied in a ponytail. Despite her hair being pulled back, Peter still couldn't see her face.

"I'll shoot her a text." Robin quickly sends a text. Peter watches as the girl below pulls out her phone. When she looks up, Peter felt as if the world stopped entirely.

Ace looks up at the window where Robin was at. She could see the girl waving furiously, a large grin spread across her face. Ace could see that someone was with her, but she couldn't see his face. Ace waves back with a smile before running inside.

Robin watches Ace disappear through the entrance. She turns to Peter, who was frozen still, mouth opened.

"Looks like someone loves the new girl." She snickers, closing Peter's mouth. Ned walks up, noticing Peter.

"Is Pete alright?" The boy asks.

"Think he just saw his true love." Robin jokes.

"Who?" Ned says confused. Robin laughs.

"She'll be here soon." She explains. Just then, Ace walks in. "Acelia!" Robin runs to the girl. Ned follows, leaving Peter still staring out the window. Peter spots a new face while sitting there. The boy was about Peter's height, with brown eyes and dark hair. He wore a light shirt with a leather jacket and jeans.

"He must be the other new student." Peter thinks before going to meet Acelia.

Acelia walks in the door only to be bombarded. She gets tackled into a hug.

"You came!" Robin exclaims.

"Well, yeah. I couldn't leave you on read." Ace laughs.

"Oh, this is Ned. Ned, this is Ace." Acelia shakes the hand of the boy.

"Nice to meet you." Ned says.

"Same here." Ace smiles.

"And this..." Peter pulls another boy over. Acelia feels her heart skip a beat when she examines his face. Brown eyes glitter with something Ace couldn't describe. "...is Peter." Robin finishes. "He and Ned grew up with me."

"Hi. I'm Acelia." She says.

"Yeah. P-Peter. Robin's said a lot about you." The boy stutters, which Ace finds cute. She feels her cheeks heating up and quickly looks away to examine the room, hiding her hands in case she turned by accident. Robin notices this action, knowing of Acelia's other identity. You see, Acelia had the power to shift into any animal. Sometimes, her emotions, if strong enough, caused her to shift on accident. The first time it happened was at her old school. The bully had ripped up her only picture of her parents. Acelia had become fuming. Next thing she knew, she was outside in a dog form. Steve found her sitting under a tree, not able to shift back. It had been her first transformation. Over the years, Steve helped her learn how to use her powers. Now, it had to be a truly strong emotion for her to shift accidentally. Robin doesn't get a change to ask Ace before another boy walks in.

"Shawn!" Ace practically knocks the boy over, who catches her mid-air. "You made it!"

"Acelia. I missed you too." The boy laughs. Ignoring the churning in her stomach, Robin walks over.

"You know him?" Robin asks Acelia.

"Of course! Shawn and I grew up together in Canada." Ace explains.

"I thought you were born in the States." Robin says.

"I was. My dad got a job just outside of Toronto. We moved when I was 3." Ace corrects.

"Acelia and I were really close. We met in kindergarten." Shawn says with a smile. Robin feels her heart skip. Just then, the teacher walks in.

"Students, take your seats, please." He says. "I have an announcement. We have 2 new students: Shawn Mendes and Acelia Rogers. I expect you all to welcome them." The mention of Ace's last name caused an undercurrent. Ace knew what they were thinking.

'Was she the daughter of Captain America?'  In truth, he was only her legal guardian, but Steve was like a father to her anyway. Still, she hated the way some of them looked at her, like she was a new specimen from the museum. Ace ignores them and starts doodling in her notebook as the day begins.
