Lunch Date

Mrs. Jeon's POV-

I arrived twenty minutes ago.

I am sat at a table within view of the counter. I made sure to choose one where it wouldn't be too unbelievable for Taehyung to spot me while they order.

I have a nice view out the front window of the busy city street which is perfect for people watching as I sip on my Diet Coke and pick at my pastry.

I glance down at my watch, seeing it is six minutes past twelve. I shake my head at Taehyung's punctuality blunder, but I am sure it is her error and not his.

Just as I move my eyes back to the sidewalk outside I see someone who looks to be a blue haired Taehyung with a small bouncing blonde girl next to him.

As they make their way inside and up to the counter I see him nodding along, laughing with the girl about something, being completely oblivious to the people and things around him.

Always quite the actor that Kim Taehyung.

As he gets to the counter he moves his head in an exaggerated way as if he is so overwhelmed by the menu that he isn't sure where to look first, that's when he notices me.

I see his smile widen a smidge before he returns to scanning the menu above.

My goodness, I hardly recognize him as the high schooler that moved away all those years ago. What a looker he is. Whoever ends up with this gem of a human being better realize just how lucky they are.

I see the girl point something out on the menu and he follows her finger to where she is pointing before nodding happily. They share giddy smiles before she turns to the cashier to place the order.

After their order is placed and they have their iced drinks in hand, I watch as he begins looking around for an empty seat while making slow steps towards my side of the café.

The girl comes to stand next to him while he continues to unnoticeably nudge her softly so she is scanning my side of the room while he is looking back towards the other.

She extends her elbow out to tap his side to get his attention, nodding to a table just a few over from mine that has been freshly cleaned.

Now she is the one that has picked where they sit. So far she has made all of the notable decisions today that have lead to me.

Brilliant.

As they walk towards me the girl catches my eye. We share polite smiles as she turns to the table.

Taehyung completely ignores that I am there, fumbling with his receipt in one hand while juggling his pink blended drink in the other as he sits across from the girl.

Almost as soon as he takes a seat he starts an enthusiastic conversation with her about how nice it smells and how he never noticed this place before even though he lives so close by.

As he's talking I peak around to get a better view of his face as if trying to verify if he is who I think he is before standing up slowly and making my way to their table.

The girl sees me stand and watches me the entire time as I walk to them. I give her an apologetic smile before I move my attention to Taehyung.

As I get closer I give a hesitant smile before speaking.

"Kim Taehyung? Is that you?"

I say this just as he has taken a drink of his drink. Not intentionally, but the way he begins to cough as he looks up at me, seemingly shocked at my appearance at their table could not have been played out better.

A little dramatic, but I can appreciate that. Again, is sales the realism.

As soon as he catches his breath he says, "M-Mrs Jeon? What are going doing here?!"

He stands up before throwing his arms around me in a big hug, lifting me off the ground.

As he sets me back on my feet I place my hands on his cheeks, "Sweet boy, I haven't seen you in so long! How are you? How are your parents?"

"They are doing great! Probably glad to have me out of the house in all honesty." He says with a teasing giggle.

Suddenly we hear a small cough to my left. Taehyung's eyes widen as he takes a short step back.

"Oh my, how rude of me! Mrs. Jeon this is my friend Yeri!" He smiles, gesturing to the girl.

I turn to her with a smile as I reach my hand out for her to shake, "Yeri, what a beautiful name! It's very nice to meet you."

She takes it lightly in hers as she looks at me closely. "Mrs. Jeon?"

"Yeri this is Jungkook's Amma." He says before turning to me with a confused face. "Are you here visiting him? Is he here with you?" He asks as he turns to look around us.

"Unfortunately it's just me. He had a friend he had plans with today. I was taking a walk around the campus, saw this place and decided to stop in for a quick lunch. He didn't tell you I was coming?"

He shakes his head with an unhappy chuckle. "He didn't, but he probably just forgot..."

"I see." I say as I rock on my heels uncomfortably, "Well, I didn't mean to interrupt you both. I was just excited to see you! It's been so long. I'll let you get back to your date with this beautiful young lady." I smile at Yeri.

I am turned away from then, on my back to my table when she calls out.

"Wait. Would you like to join us?"

I turn back to them, meeting the glimmering eyes of Yeri as she smiles softly at me.

"This isn't a date, so you wouldn't be interrupting. We would love you to join us!" She says as she pulls out the chair next to her.

I smile at her again before looking at Taehyung with a hesitant expression. "If you're sure. I really don't want to intrude..."

"Of course not! The table is plenty big enough for the three of us. I'll help you bring your things over." Yeri smiles as she stands to walk with me to my table.

What a sweet girl. It's a shame she's helping that woman.

We return to the table with what's left of my pastry and drink, setting the dishes down as I take a seat, with Yeri on my left and Taehyung across from me.

"It's so good to see you Mrs Jeon. How long will you be visiting for?" Taehyung asks.

"I am planning on leaving in the morning. I was hoping to leave this afternoon, but I don't think I'd make it home before dark." I turn to Yeri as I add, "I have terrible eyesight. It's better for my safety as well as everyone else's if I only drive during the day."

"You said you were going to have that eye surgery Mrs. Jeon! Have you still not done that?!"

I'm genuinely surprised he remembers me saying that so long ago. So much so that it causes me to let out a genuine laugh.

"You still remember when I was researching that?!" I giggle. "No, I haven't gotten it. I just couldn't bring myself to go through with it. I made the mistake of watching a video of the procedure and it was..." I shudder. "I couldn't go through with it." I chuckle, still amused that he remembered my mentioning entertaining the idea of having the procedure done.

Then Yeri speaks up from beside me. "Will you be going back to Busan?"

My smile slips just a bit at this. So they know we are in Busan.

"My next stop is Daejeon. I have arranged a visit with an old friend." I smile.

"How fun!" She smiles politely. "So Mrs. Jeon, you know, Jungkook was one of the first people I met when I moved here to Seoul. He is very sweet."

"He can be when he wants to be." I chuckle, shaking my head. "He can be rather introverted as well. Not very talkative. I'm glad he seems to be coming out of his shell."

She leans back in her seat a little as her face turns a bit serious. I can see she is chewing the inside of her cheek as she observes me.

"He seems like a very strong person. Mentally and physically."

"Thank you. He is definitely a sweetheart," I smile softly before taking a sip of my Diet Coke.

"He is very disciplined as well. It makes sense now that I'm meeting you. I figured he must have been raised by strong people in order to be so amazing and it seems I was right!"

She's laughing but the amusement doesn't quite reach her eyes.

"He's a good boy. Strong willed too. Not easily pushed around," I smile just as tensely.

"Strong willed indeed..." he tilts her head curiously. "Were you or his father high ranking in the military?"

The question is abrupt. Completely unexpected as well.

Hearing it causes me to stop mid-sip.

I fight the urge to narrow my eyes, demanding she tell that bitch friend of hers to stop snooping around in our lives if she knows what's good for her, but instead I return a syrupy sweet smile to my face.

I will admit, I'm a bit jumbled in my own thoughts as I try to sort exactly how to answer her question.

"I only ask because-"

Suddenly Taehyung exclaims from my side, "Yeri, the movie! We are going to be late if we don't leave like, right now!" He says as he stares at his phone screen with widened eyes.

"You're right! We'd better get going." She turns to me. "I'll go see if they can just wrap our sandwiches to go so you two can say goodbye. It was really nice to meet you Mrs. Jeon!"

She smiles brightly before waking off towards the register.

Without moving my eyes from her retreating frame I ask, "Is that the first time she's mentioned the military?"

"That's the first I've heard of it. I will bring it up and try to see where she got that from and let you know."

I'm sat, feeling speechless with my lips pressed tightly together.

Irene has some very capable people on her payroll of their investigating got so far as placing us with the military.

She has no idea what she's possibly done...

My eyebrows draw together in worry as I look over to Taehyung, reaching across the table to take his hands in mine.

"Taehyung, I need you to tell me everything you find out. Please. I understand that you're helping Yoongi and his friend but please, tell them whatever you find out but leave out anything that has to do with the military." I plead, looking deeply into his eyes. "Can you do that for me?"

"Please don't be worried. I won't tell them anything. I promise." He says gently as he squeezes my hand in his.

"Thank you sweetie. Thank you so much."

I stand up from the table and he does the same before he pulls me into another hug. Once he releases me I look up at him.

"I-I won't be able to make it to dinner... I'm- I need to leave sooner than I had planned. I'll let the others know. Thank you so much Taehyung," I pat his shoulder.

"It was nice to see you too Mrs. Jeon. I'll be in touch." He smiles.

"Thank you Taehyungie."

Just then I see Yeri over his shoulder walking back to the two of us, walks up next to us with a paper bag in hand.

"I wish we saw each other more often, Taehyungie. I miss our visits, dear," I voice loudly enough for her to hear.

I turn to her once she's stood beside Taehyung.

"And thank you for letting me crash your lunch Miss Yeri. It was lovely meeting you. I hope the two of you have fun at your movie." I smile cheerfully.

I give a small bow to both of them before walking past to make my way to the exit.

Once outside I can finally let my expression fall as the worry crashes over me.

"How did they find out? We've been so careful with our trail..." I mumble to myself as I step out onto the sidewalk.

My emotions quickly turn from worry to anger as I think about the consequences if Irene keeps sticking her nose where it doesn't belong.

This is much bigger than wanting revenge on your ex. She's putting mine and my son's lives in danger.

As I make it to my car and climb inside I take out the small flip phone from my glove compartment, dialing the only number saved on the device.

*RING* *RING*

"Security code?" A monotone voice drawls.

"01091997" I recite.

"I'll connect you now."

After a few moments of silence a familiar voice comes through the speaker.

"General Kim speaking."

"Something's happened."

"Are you in trouble?" He asks quickly, unable to keep the worry from his voice.

I bring my thumb to my lips, nibbling on my nail nervously.

"Not if we nip the problem in the bud now," I saw finally. "I'm- we," I correct, "are going to need your help."

"Let me make a call. Stand-by."

After that the line cuts off.

Tears threaten to fall as my throat tightens.

This isn't good. Isn't good at all.
