Chapter 70

Lina looked up from the floor as she turned towards her son, girlfriend, and Sejeong, who looked at them in confusion.

"Y/n, Wendy..." she said, a small smile forming on her face as her eyes landed on her niece, "and Sejeong too," she continued before getting up from her seat and approaching them. She sighed and crossed her arms, "It's Sang-Il..."

Sejeong's brows furrowed, "what's with him?"

Lina shook her head, "he wouldn't eat his meal no matter how many times we asked him," she explained as she looked over her shoulder at the door of Sang-Il's room. "We were hoping that you..." she looked at Sejeong again and paused briefly before clearing her throat, "we were hoping you would be able to help."

As she heard what Y/n's mom said, Sejeong looked at her father's room, crossing her arms before thinking for a while – she was hoping to be able to talk with him today, but she never expected that the opportunity would mean leaving her and her father in the hospital room alone. After a few seconds, Sejeong nodded, "I will try," she said before looking at her cousin and his girlfriend and then at her aunty.

While Sejeong entered her father's room, Y/n, Wendy, and Lina joined the former's grandparents at the seat outside the hospital room – Mr. Kim's face lit up as he saw his grandson joining them.

"What changed Sejeong's mind?" asked Mr. Kim as soon as Y/n sat beside him – the former had saw Sejeong enter the room, but he didn't get to ask since she looked determined and focused, and he didn't want to distract her or change her mood for that matter.

Y/n hummed and leaned against the steel chair, crossing his arms, "I don't know – I mean, I did asked her to give Sang-Il a visit, but that's about it. She didn't say outright that she would be coming with us," he explained while looking at his grandfather, who nodded understandingly.

"Then what about Seungwan... what brought you here today?" Mr. Kim asked with a soft smile, looking at Wendy.

Wendy, spacing out, didn't hear the question, so Y/n gently nudged her to the side. The former quickly snapped out of her thoughts and looked at her boyfriend, humming before Y/n gestured to her that his grandfather asked a question. "Huh, what was that?" asked Wendy, chuckling awkwardly as she looked at Mr Kim.

"Sorry, I wasn't paying attention..." she continued awkwardly while scratching her head, embarrassed.

Mr. Kim laughed at her answer before waving his hands slightly and shaking his head. "Don't worry – I was just wondering what brought you here?" he repeated.

Wendy smiled and nodded, "oh..." she looked at Y/n and then at his grandfather, "Y/n asked me if I wanted to come with him here," she explained. "And I said yes – I figured we should take over on watching Sejeong's father," she continued, and her boyfriend couldn't help from widening his eyes at the impromptu plan.

"Oh, is that right, Y/n?" asked Mr. Kim, looking at his grandson with a wrinkled smile.

Y/n, still flustered from the plan made by Wendy, nodded, and cleared his throat, "oh, yes – you guys should get some rest," he said before getting up from the chair, taking his phone out of his pocket before smiling sheepishly.

"I will give Manager Song a call to pick you guys up," he said before dialing the girls' manager, looking at his family with a soft smile before walking a few meters away from the others to talk privately with Manager Song.

After a few seconds, the call connected, and Y/n started to talk.

"Oh, hey, Manager Song... sorry for disturbing you..."

"It's okay, Y/n. What's wrong?"

Y/n looked over his shoulder at the others before continuing. "If you don't mind, can you come to the hospital and pick up my mom and grandparents? I figured it's time we switch places with them on watching over your girlfriend's dad."

There was a long pause before Manager Song talked again.

"I... your teasing timing really is impeccable, isn't it?" he exclaimed with a chuckle before continuing to talk, "Alright, I will be there in forty-five minutes."

"Alright, I will let them know. See you," Y/n said, bidding farewell to Manager Song before ending the call and returning to the others with a smile.

"Manager Song will be here in forty-five minutes to pick you guys up," said Y/n to them.

Mrs Kim looked up at her grandson before sighing, "we could've just take the bus, Y/n... why do you have to bother Manager Song so much?" she scolded softly – but Y/n smiled in return, used to her empathetic and kind nature.

"Don't worry, Grandma – Manager Song is more than happy to pick you up. Besides, there won't be another bus for the next hour," Y/n said before patting his grandmother's head, sitting back beside Wendy as they sat in silence.

Meanwhile, Sang-Il finally ate his meal while Sejeong sat beside him, watching the old man with pity as she sighed. Her father looked at her as he heard Sejeong sigh and looked at the messenger bag she was carrying.

"What's in your bag?" asked Sang-Il, trying to engage in a conversation with his daughter.

Sejeong looked at her bag and then at her father, while raising her eyebrows before shaking her head, "it's nothing," she said, avoiding his eyes as she looked down to the floor.

She was so confident of being able to talk and interact with her father without having the memories of her childhood getting to her head, but she was proven wrong when she realized that the memories couldn't be suppressed, added to the fact that she was alone with her father in the room made it even harder for her to find the right words to say.

Sang-Il sighed softly as he looked at his meal, "do you know..." he started while mixing his rice with the soy sauce gently, "I regretted what I did to your mother, and for neglecting you..." he continued before looking at Sejeong.

Sejeong kept her head down, not saying anything yet, as she wanted her father to continue talking for a while. Sang-Il looked at her daughter, pausing for a few seconds before continuing, "Sometimes, I wished that I could turn back time and stop myself from being a bad husband and father."

"I love your mother, Sejeong, as much as I loved you, but I...I was selfish, and I hurt you and your mom more times than I could count," Sang-Il continued while staring at his food tray, which was half-empty now. "And I wanted to apologize to you... I shouldn't have leave you...or your mother – I should've..."

That was when Sejeong couldn't hold it any longer. She lifted her face from the floor, looking at her father with teary eyes. "Now you want to apologize?" she asked shakily before shaking her head. "Why didn't you say that when mom was still with us? Why have you never once told me that you loved me, or mom when we were going through hard times? Where were you when I graduated high school? Where were you when I earned my degree? You weren't there – only Aunt Lina, and grandpa, and grandma were there. They supported me after you neglected me – they were there when I needed someone to lean on."

Sang-Il stared at his daughter, surprised but expecting an outburst from her as Sejeong continued to talk. "While my friends had their parents come to school whenever there was an event, you never once showed up," Sejeong sniffled before looking away from her father, wiping her tears with her sleeves before getting up from the chair.

"I might've been able to forgive you if you at least showed up during mom's funeral...if you apologize then," she trembled as she looked at her father, "but you didn't."

"I'm sorry..." Sang-Il said weakly, unable to meet his daughter's eyes.

Sejeong sniffled and sighed heavily, "you want to know what's inside my bag?" she asked as she pulled out the drawings she had brought with her, "here... have a look at them," she sobbed as she put them on the bed, in front of her father. They were drawings that she drew when she was in middle school – in the drawings were Sejeong, and her parents at each side, holding her hands while smiling.

"Despite what you did to Mom and me..." Sejeong shook her head, "I still loved you – I convinced myself then that one of those days, you would change, and what I envisioned in a happy family would come true," she continued before sighing again. "But I was wrong – you neglected us instead."

Sang-Il stared at the drawings as he started to cry, realizing that even after being a bad and abusive husband and father, Sejeong still had faith that he would change, but he let the chance slip away when he decided to leave them at the time, they needed him the most. "Sejeong..."

At that point, Sejeong was already at the door, her hand on the knob as she heard him calling out to her, but she ignored him and walked out of the room.

Sejeong's family, and Wendy, who were outside, looked at her in surprise as they saw the tears running down her cheeks. "Sejeong, what's wrong?" asked Y/n, looking at his cousin worriedly.

Ignoring the question, Sejeong walked away from them and towards the elevator.
