Episode 21: Soul Encounter

I decided to go get Yuko and I something to eat before heading out to search.

"Hey, you," a voice called out from behind as soon as we entered the cafeteria.

I turned around and saw the same man from before and his child.

"Kun, go join your mommy and siblings. I want to talk to this young man."

"Okay!" Kun said, grinning. "Hope that Lei and Yen haven't eaten all of the honey chips!"

I put my hands behind my head as I watched the kid run off. It was strange, but seeing him go like that made me feel as if I were watching my own son running off.

Once he was gone, I turned toward the kid's actual father.

"Young man you said? You seems pretty young yourself... Though you do look as if you've seen a lot in your short life," I said.

The man chuckled. "How did you figure?"

"Not sure," I said, shrugging. "I can just tell. So, what is it that you wish to talk about? My friend here and I are famished."

The man walked past me. "Then allow me to buy you something."

I looked around the place. The room was covered in gold and the floor was white and made of a super reflective material, giving the illusion that one is levitating slightly.

"Hey, how expensive is the food here?" I asked.

"Very. Though thankfully, I'm not one actually paying. If I were then I would be indebted for years! Lucky for me, I got my sponsor paying for me."

"Sponsor?" I asked, tilting my head. "Aren't only those up to 21 allowed to participate? You can't be 21, uh... unless if you had that kid at fourteen."

The man snickered. "You are correct. I am 24. As for my sponsor... I guess client would be a better term." He drew closer. "I was hired to provide security for the games."

"Security?"

"Yeah. I work in security. I was hired as one of the guards for Chief Kohana. He's the ruler of Wahkan, a tiny island nation toward the northwest of here. Though that man doesn't need much protection, he is a powerhouse in his own right. So instead I've taken to watching over our nation's team."

"I hope that you are more efficient than King Osamu's guards back home," I said, snickering.

The man chuckled as we lined up. "I am not sure who that is, but I am not too shabby if I say so myself."

I smiled. Maybe Ximena was right. This guy really did seem to be me. Hopefully he was stronger than this world's Serrano.

"There's so many people!" someone screamed as they lined up behind us. The person was a feminine looking black haired guy. His eyes were also blue but they were a oasis blue opposed to my counterpart's electric blue.

He was right, the line did go on for several meters.

"Serra?" Yuko asked, tilting her head at the scrawny kid.

Serra? Wait, is this kid my cousin's Xelerian counterpart?

"Huh?" the kid said, blinking. The guy seemed to be around thirteen or fourteen. "W-who is that? I-I'm Sirius, a-and for your in-information, I'm a b-boy!"

Was this kid Serra's counterpart or Dan's? Because he sure was nothing like Serra. But he sure reminded me of Dan. His close age, shaggy hair covering part of his face and eyes only increased the similarities. Wait, actually, he did resemble my cousin, back when we first met.

Though he kinda sounded like Hanketsu...

I snickered. "Serra is one too. I guess his nickname does fit a girl's."

"O-okay," he said, averting his gaze.

My laughter died down. Yup, the guy was definitely Serra alright. The face he was making was just like the one that Serra made when we met. Somehow they got a 'this guy is strange' first impression of me.

My counterpart chuckled. "Don't be afraid, Sirius. This guy is a friend."

A friend? We barely met! Though, if he is me then I guess we met before... Hmmm, this stuff is confusing.

The boy looked up at me and adjusted his glasses. "Oh. P-pardon, mister. I-I didn't mean to offend."

I waved my hand dismissively. "No worries. I know what I just said is strange."

The boy smiled in a way just like Serra used to. He tilted his head at me. "H-how strange, for a moment there, I-I felt as if I've known you from before."

I grinned. "Have you now?"

"Felt the same way when I met Feng and Eri. Even though it was my first time meeting them."

I turned my gaze back to the blond man. Was he Feng or Eri?

"I'm Feng," he said as if he had read my mind. And who knew, maybe he had. "Eri is my adopted brother-slash-foster son."

"Huh?" Sirius and I said at once. Yeah, he was Serra alright.

"That was...creepy. One would think he was your doppelganger rather than me," he said, hiding a chuckle. "Anyway, Eri is basically family to me. Even if there are no blood ties between us."

That reminded me of Serra and my mom. Serra still saw her as his aunt even though his uncle, my dad, had passed away when we were three. And my mom in turn saw him like another son.

"Lucky!" Yuko said with a bright smile.

Sirius nodded.

I felt a pang in my chest. Serra was the only family I had around, and even then, our close bond was strained. What were the others back home thinking about my situation? Had they learned about it yet?

I felt a hand on my shoulder. I glanced up and saw Feng give me a serious look. It was as if he were telling me to calm down and take it easy. In some ways, it felt as if I had my big brother in front of me.

"Thanks," I muttered.

Feng nodded silently, once again acting as if he knew what I were feeling. It sorta made me want to know what the story hidden in his eyes was. Why did it seem as if he too had experienced something big.

Come to think of it, he said that Eri was his adopted brother. Did that mean that his own parents were dead? So... even in this world, I had lost my dad... Was that the case with my other counterparts? Had they also lost at least one parent?

He turned away.

"Hey, what did you wish to talk about?" I asked. "I doubt you called me to buy me dinner."

"I wanted to get to know you better. Or rather, know myself better."

"Y-you can tell?"

Feng nodded.

I felt Sirius staring at us in confusion.

I chuckled a bit. "So, what kind of magic do you use?"

Feng held out a hand and caused azure electricity to sparkle across his palm.

"Cool!" Yuko said.

I nodded. It really was. Though I was hoping that he would have earth or shadow magic.

"I can also use wind," he said, forming a miniature twister in his right hand. "As well as control earth and sound." A rock appeared in his left hand as sound waves caused the stone to vibrate.

"Four? Amazing!" Yuko said, gasping.

Feng made his the wind, rock, and sound waves vanish. "Thanks!"

"Hey, Tetsu!" a voice called out. "The games will be starting in a bit."

It was Ximena. This time Serrano and the princess accompanied her eyes.

Feng gasped as soon as he saw Rosalba. "Harmonica?" He shook his head and looked down at Yuko and gave her a puzzled look.

"Who is Harmonica?" I asked.

"My wife."

Wait, the one Kun confused Yuko for?

Feng chuckled. "Seems we got a mystery on our hands."

"Yeah, but how do we begin solving it?" I asked, tilting my head.

Feng shrugged. "Who knows, but I'll give it a try." He placed a hand over his heart. "To figure out this mystery of our shatter souls."

What could've caused it? Part of me hoped that the cause wasn't sinister in origin. If so then that would only add to my plate of issues. Especially if whoever or whatever did so were still around and looking to finish off what it began.
