Chapter 13- Get Up
It's been 1 week since Stephen woke up. 1 week, all by myself. I know before I met Stephen, I lived alone, but ever since he came to live we me, and ever since we started dating, I hate being by myself. I'm currently sat in front of the TV flicking through the channels, trying to find something to watch. At 9pm last night, Stephen, with the help of Newt and Matt, kicked me out and sent me home. Mat dropped me off and stayed with me until 10pm, when I apparently crashed out on the sofa. I woke up at 5am and found a note from Matt on the kitchen counter. It read;
Kat, I left at around 10 ish. Hope you had a good night's sleep, when I left you had crashed out on the sofa. I'll by round in the morning, around 9 ish, so be ready outside.
- Matt
It's now 08:30, and I'm basically bouncing off the walls. I went for a run before having a shower. Since then I've had 3 cups of coffee. I'm desperate to see Stephen. He's getting better. He's off most of the machines now and is get better and better every day. Newt says, once he's up and about, he can be discharged. So, that's the plan for today. Between having a shower and now, I've tidied the whole apartment, I want everything to be perfect for when Stephen comes home.
I guess I kind of zoned out because the next thing I know, I jump at the sound of the door knocking. I take a second to compose myself before opening the door. There stands Matt, holding two cups of fresh coffee.
"Morning" I say, grabbing my things and taking the coffee of Matt.
"Thanks" I say taking a sip. He just shakes it off.
"And how are you today?" He asks, as we reach the truck (ARC car).
"I'm okay. I just really want to see Stephen." I say, looking at Matt. He smiles at my before nodding his head and climbing in the truck. I throw my bag on the back seat before climbing into the passenger seat. Matt pulls out and we start the 20 or so minute drive to the ARC.
The drive is silent, the only sound coming from the radio that is playing softly in the background. I stare out of the window and look at all the passing cars and buildings. Before I know it we're pulling into the carpark at the ARC. I hop out the truck before Matt even has the chance to open his door. I chuckle as I grab my bag from the back seat. I meet Matt by the door that leads to the stairs. I thank him as he holds the door open for me. We slowly make our ways up the stairs.
"You know, Stephen doesn't like the fact that you aren't working. Why don't you come back to work, just until he gets discharged? I mean, I know you'll be off with him for the first few days at least once he's at home." I shake my head, not sure how I feel about this.
"Well...I, I mean I really want to, especially if Stephen wants me to. But Newt says there's a chance he might be able to go home today if he can get up and about okay." I say, as we reach the door to the main level.
"Okay, well find out what's happening with Stephen, and let me know" He says, patting my shoulder.
"Will do." We spilt up and head in different directions. Before Matt turns the corner, I shout to him.
"Hey Matt! Thank You" He just nods his head and continues on. I drop my things off in my office and grab my laptop off my desk.
I make my way to the infirmary. I wave to all the nurses I pass, before pushing the door to Stephen's room open.
"Hey guys" I say, smiling at Connor before quickly kissing Stephen.
"Heard anything new?" I ask, wondering if Newt has said anything.
"Nope, Newt said hello when he came in at 7, but I haven't seen him since. Connor's been here for around 30 minutes. I nod my head and sit down next to Stephens bed. I load up my laptop and start to organise and respond to all my emails. It's been awhile since I last checked them. I leave the boys to chat. I only really pay attention when Connor leaves.
"What you up to?" Stephen asks, looking at my laptop.
"Nothing really. I was just checking my emails. It's been awhile" I say, putting my laptop down. I move and sit down on the bed with Stephen.
"Emm, I missed you" I say, snuggling into him.
"I'm sorry" Stephen blurts out. I look up at him.
"For what?" I ask, looking into his eyes.
"For this. If I had been more careful, or If I had moved faster than none of this wouldn't have happened." He says, close to tears. I sit up and turn to face him. I put my hands on his cheeks and turn his head to look at me. He tries to look away.
"Hey, Hey, Look at me." I say. He looks at me and sighs.
"None of this was your fault. It was just a freak accident. Yes, this has been hard on us, hell everyone. But, we got through the worst together, and we're going to get through the rest together because that's what we are Stephen. A team. We'll get through this and anything anyone throws at us in the future because we were made for each other. We belong together." By the end of the sentence I have tears pouring down my face as does Stephen. I kiss him and we just stay sitting like this until the door opens.
Newt walks in and looks at us.
"Everything okay? I am interrupting something...because I can leave you know it no prob..." He says, rambling on. Before he can finish I cut him off.
"No. Everything's perfect. What's up doc?" I ask, making everyone laugh. Not only is that from the looney toons but it's also the catchphrase I always say to him.
"Well everything here checks out...so if you feel up to it and you can get up and about okay then I'll discharge you." Newt says, looking between us and the chart.
"Great." Stephen says. I help him stand up and he walks around the room.
"How'd you feel? No dizziness or pain?" Newt asks, watching him like a hawk.
"Nope. Everything is good" He says, standing to talk to Newt.
"Okay then. I'll go get the papers and your meds." Newt says, leaving the rooms. I help pack up all his things.
"Right, I'll be back in a bit. I'm going to go let everyone know. I need to talk to Matt about work and I'm going to go get keys to one of the trucks so we can go home." I say, hugging Stephen.
"Okay, but don't be long. I want out of here as soon as possible." He says, giving me a kiss before sitting down. I nod before leaving the room. I head to hub, hoping to get keys to one of the trucks and find Matt. I find Matt and we go into Lester's office to talk about work.
"Good news is Stephen's doing much better and is being discharge right now. Bad news is I won't be back to work for at last another couple of days." I say, looking between Matt and Lester.
"Okay, take all the time you need. Look after Stephen." Matt says. I thank them and we go to leave Lester's office.
"Kat, a word, in private" Lester says, right as I go to walk out the door.
"What's up?" I ask, sitting down in front of my Uncle.
"How are you Kat? Really..." He asks. I can see the concern across his face.
"I'm good. Great in fact now that Stephen is going home." I say, reassuring him I'm okay.
"Okay good. Now I know you took this time off as holiday, but I cleared you on medical leave. So, keep your holiday days and go take Stephen home" Lester says, getting up and hugging me.
"Oh, and anything. And I mean anything you need at all, call me." Lester says, opening the door for me.
"Thank you" I say, leaving his office. I walk over to Jess.
"Hey Jess. Can I have the keys to one of the trucks so I can take Stephen home?" I say, smiling.
"Sure. Here you go, take care and give him my best" She says, before getting back to work.
"Thanks Jess, will do. I'll see you in a few days" I say, walking back to the infirmary.
"Hey ready to go?" I say, grabbing his bag.
"Yeah, let's go" He says, picking up his meds and papers.
We walk to the truck, hand in hand. I put the bag in the back and get into the driver's seat. Stephen takes my hand;
"Let's go home" He says smiling. Home. Sounds perfect to me. I finally have the person I love at home with me. He's not 100% yet, but he'll get there and I'll be by his side every step of the way.
