Chapter 9 - Blood Brothers part 2
Back to Steve & Danny – (Steve's p.o.v:)
"Bonilla's playing right field. Bret Saberhag, Bret, Bret Saberhagen's on the mound. Where the hell you been? I moved on to the '92 roster. It's a tough year." Danny says agitated when I arrive back to him. Carrying a flashlight and metal pole.
"I found a flashlight. We're gonna need that." I say, placing the flashlight by his head.
"Okay. You got to get this thing off me." Danny says, desperate to be anywhere but stuck here.
"Okay." I say, moving the pole underneath the beam/concrete.
"When I lift this, you feel the weight come off your leg, I need you to roll out, slide your leg out, okay? But you got to do it quick. I don't know how long I can hold this." I say, making sure he knows the game plan and what he has to do.
"That's very encouraging. I'm not even sure I can move." Danny says, shifting a bit.
"You can. You can. You can, all right?"
"Uh-huh." He says, gritting his teeth.
"All right, you ready? One, two, three." I say, lifting the pole up with my shoulder.
"Roll, roll, roll!" I say. I put the pole down when I see he's free.
"Oh, that's no good." Danny says, pointing to the piece of metal in his side.
"Okay. You stay still. I got to look at this. Come on." I say, moving his shirt, making him groan loudly.
"Oh, what is that?" Danny says, after I push his hands away.
"Okay, it's a piece of rebar. It's missed your vitals, but I got to take it out. The trick's gonna be to stop the bleeding." I say, thinking of how I should do this.
"Maybe don't take it out. Maybe we just leave it in for a minute." Danny says, groaning in pain.
"Leaving it in is not an option. This gets infected, sepsis sets in, then we got real trouble. You understand me?" I say, standing up again.
"I'm gonna be right back." I say, looking through some of the rubble until I find the two things I'm looking for.
"Okay. All right, this has got peroxide in it. I can disinfect this wound. I'm not gonna lie to you; this is gonna hurt a lot. The really bad pain only lasts a couple of seconds. You got to stay conscious. I'm right here." I say, looking seriously at Danny. He nods, fear and pain, washed over his face.
"All right? Ready? Two. Three." I say, pulling out the rebar and pouring on some of the liquid.
"Oh! God! All right, all right." Danny screams, on the brink of passing out.
"Stay with me, Danny. Stay with me." I say, ripping part of my top and soaking it with the liquid before putting over the wound.
"Hey, who played left? '86 Mets, left field-- who was it?" I ask, putting duct tape over the piece of top.
"George Foster, and he was replaced by Mookie Wilson after two seasons." Danny says, groaning again.
"Midseason, rig? That's my boy. Keep the pressure. Keep the pressure, Danny. Stay with me." I say, finally finishing cleaning up and stabilising the wound.
"How we looking? Is it good?" Danny asks, putting his hand over the duct tape, and sitting up.
"It's good. Pretty good." I say, helping him up.
Back on the surface – Tia's p.o.v:
I woke up and got showered and dressed. I went wondering around the house, going to make some food, only to find a note on the side. It's from Uncle Steve.
Work called. Call if you need me, I'll see you later x – Uncle Steve 5am
I look at the time now, almost 1pm. WOW! Guess I really was tired. All the sleepless nights recently finally getting to me.
I make some breakfast – well lunch and sit down in front of the TV, sipping on my coffee and munching on my sandwich. I turn on the news and instantly start to panic. I see the building collapse and how two members of five-0 are still trapped. I'm pulled back into reality by my phone ringing.
"Hello?" I say, having not checked the caller ID.
"Tia, it's Catherine. Have- "I cut her off.
"I've seen the news. Is Uncle Steve okay? Is anyone hurt?" I say, listing off question after question.
"Hey! Tia, listen to me. Steve and Danny are trapped in the rubble, that's all we know at the minute. Everyone else is okay." Catherine says, gaining me attention. My heart sinks, I can't lose any more family, they're all I have left.
"Oh god. Okay, I'm coming down now. I'll be there soon" I say, hurry around the house, grabbing my shoes and keys.
"Okay, be careful I'll see you soon" Catherine says, then hangs up. I go into the kitchen and over to the fridge. Since I came to live with him, Uncle Steve keeps some money in a tin above the fridge, in case of emergencies. I think this counts as one. I take the money and leave the house, locking the door on my way out. I call a taxi. Once it arrives I give the driver the address and tell him to hurry. He drives off towards the site. He stops around the corner, due to the road block. I get out and pay him, before running the rest of the way. When I get there, an officer stops me.
"No! Let me in. My Uncle is Steve McGarrett!" I shout, gaining the attention of the team. Kono rushes over and the officer lets me in.
"Tia come take a seat. We're trying to get the out now okay." She says, hugging me. I nod and sit down on the hood of Uncle Steve's truck, which is parked outside.
Back to Steve & Danny (Steve's p.o.v)
A phone starts ringing. Danny looks at me.
"Is that you? Huh?" He asks.
"It's me. It's Catherine. It's Catherine." I say, swiping to answer the call.
"Catherine." I say glad to hear her and the others.
"Steve! Thank God. Are you guys all right?" "Yeah, Danny's a little banged up, but we're okay. Everybody else get out?" I asked, concerned for my team.
"All accounted for except you two stragglers. We got the whole cavalry up here working to get you guys out." Lou says, obviously we're on speaker phone.
"Great." Danny and I say together.
"We got an ETA on that? I'm literally being held together by duct tape." Danny says.
"Yeah, we're working on it. We need to know your exact location." Lou says.
"We're in the maintenance room, south side of the garage." I say, looking around us.
"Got it. Get over here." Lou says, probably talking to the fire and rescue team.
"Steve, how's the oxygen?" Catherine asks.
"It's running low. Is there anything we can do from this end to speed things up?" I ask, wanting to get out, but mainly wanting to get Danny out and to the medics.
"Just hang tight. Listen, the entire area is unstable. You go moving something you're not supposed to, the whole damn thing'll come crashing down." Lou says, the seriousness in his tone.
"Ah, that's encouraging." Danny groans.
"Steve, what happened? You were right behind us." Catherine asks."
"Listen, you think you can establish a video call? I want to show you something." I ask, just then I have a skype incoming call.
"Hi-ya." I say.
"It's not as bad as it looks." Danny says, smiling, trying to lighten the mood.
"Thanks for trying to make me feel better. You say you wanted to show us something." Catherine says, smiling then becoming serious.
"Yeah, take a look at this." I say, showing her the body of the dead guy.
"Cath, can you capture that?"
"Got it. I'll run these photos through the database and see if I can get an I.D." She says, typing away.
"Look for any connection to JC Dekker and his crew, all right? I want to know how this guy got down here." I say, wanting answers as the why this all happened.
"Roger that."
"Those pills you found on your victim are warfarin-- It is an anticoagulant commonly used to treat patients with heart conditions." Max says, I didn't even know he was there as well.
"Well, how common is it, Max? Catherine couldn't I.D, this guy; that's our only lead." I say.
"Well, it's the most widely prescribed blood thinner out there. Can you open his shirt?" Max asks, as Danny starts to undo the man's shirt.
"Max, what are you looking for?" I ask, just as Danny gets the shirt open.
"Well, his current state of death aside, your victim is young and appears to be in good physical condition, which leads me to suspect that the victim was prescribed this drug post-op-- not to treat a chronic heart condition."
"Yeah, Max, good call. He's got a surgical scar right here. Gall bladder. Maybe kidneys." I say, pointing the camera at the man's body, so the others can see as well.
"From the look of the scar, it appears that he went under the knife in the last three months." Max says.
"All right, Max, listen, contact all area hospitals. Get a list of patients who have had similar surgeries. Cross-reference them against our vic's description, okay?" I say to Max, he nods.
"Right away, Commander." He then walks away.
Kono steps forward.
"Ermm, Steve, there's probably someone here that want to see you." She says, then it clicks. Tia!
"Yeah, can you put her on?" I ask, wanting her to see we're okay.
A minute or so later, everyone moves away from the camera, and Tia appears. She's been crying, but she smiles when she sees us.
"Hey."
"Hey" She says, sniffling.
"Are you guys alright?" She asks, concern in her tone of voice.
"Yeah, considering." I say, looking at Danny.
"Look Tia, Grace gets out of school soon. I need you to go get her and bring her here okay? Her mum and Stan are out of town" Danny says, calmly, wanting to know his daughter will be okay.
"Okay, I'll go get her. I'll see you soon, yeah?" She asks, weary of leaving. We both nod, and with that she leaves.
