Chapter 10 - Blood Brothers part 3

On the surface – No-ones p.o.v:
"We any closer to getting those guys out?"  Chin asks.
"Thanks to Catherine, we know where they are, but, uh, still trying to find a way down." Lou says. He turns to Catherine.
"How you holding up?"
"I'm, uh I'm just trying to stay positive." She says, just then Max arrives, carrying a folder.
"This is a lot worse than I imagined." He says, looking at the building, well what's left of it.
"You got something, Max?" Lou asks.
"Surgical records for every gall bladder and kidney operation performed in the last three months. John Doe's description." Max says, handing the file to Catherine.
"Okay, good."
"I'll run the list through DMV and see if I can put together a photo array." Chin says, about to walk away. away.
"I don't think that's gonna be necessary. Take a look at this name. Marcus Dekker." Catherine says, pointing to the file.
"So our victim is JC Dekker's brother. He's 25 years old. He had his gall bladder removed last month, and warfarin was prescribed to him to treat his post-op clotting issues." She says, reading the information from the folder.
"Marcus just graduated from UCLA Law four months ago. He just moved home and was studying for the bar. Guess who bankrolled his education." Chin says, reading over Catherine's shoulder.
"His big brother?" Steve ask, still on the call.
"That's right."
"So how did their relationship go from that to this? Unless Dekker didn't put him down here."
"What are you thinking, Steve?" Catherine asks.
"Dekker's been working with ATF for months now, right? What if somebody he helped to put away found that out and used it against him?" Steve says.
"Right, so Dekker gets a fake tip about a gun deal, he passes it on. They know he's gonna pass it on. So, bomb goes off, few cops get killed, and, uh, Dekker takes the fall. And as added insult, they throw his brother down there to send a message." Steve says, with
"It's a cold way to get revenge." Lou says.

Back to Steve & Danny – (Steve's p.o.v:)
"Here." I say, handing Danny a jar of water.
"I'd prefer not to drink toilet water." He says, looking at the water in disgust.
"It isn't toilet water. It's not from a fresh mountain spring, okay, but it's not sewage. It's drinkable, Danny." I say sighing.
"Take it. Don't look at it. It's over 100 degrees down here. If you want to live, drink the water." I say, making Danny take the water and have a sip.
"Ah, it's awesome." He says, sarcasm obvious in his voice.

Back on the surface – No-ones p.o.v:
"We've looked at every possible extraction point. None are stable enough to bring in the equipment we need to get down there." Hank, the chief of fire and rescue says, pointing down to the map.
"Hey, how are we supposed to get them out?" Lou asks, concerned.
"We can't." Hank says, sighing.
"At least not from where they are. We got to get them moving. Now, there's a mechanical room If they can somehow make their way over there 30 yards or so, we may be able to pull them up through the ventilation shaft." Hank says, moving his finger across the map.
"May as well be 30 miles." Frustrated.
"Well, I didn't say it was gonna be easy. They're gonna have to navigate some tight spaces, move heavy debris with little to no light." Hank says.
"Well, they'll never make it. Danny's injured." Lou said, as they all waited for a reply from Steve and Danny.
"Hank, just tell me one thing. Is this our only option?" Steve asked, considering all options. "If we do nothing, they'll run out of oxygen." Hank replies.
"Oh, good. The, uh escape-through-the-vent trick. That's-that's the big plan? That's what we're gonna do? That's great." Danny says, agitated from being in such a small place for so long.
"It's our best shot." Steve says, trying to convince him.
"Okay, well, what about the part where we're not supposed to touch anything; if we do, the whole thing could cave in on us?" Danny says, sighing.
"That's still true, so please be careful." Lou says. Steve and Danny start to move.

Back to Steve & Danny – (Steve's p.o.v:)
"I-I can't, uh I can't just enjoy happiness like regular people, you know?" Danny says, having just broken up with his girlfriend a few days ago. (A/N if you've watched the show you can see a few things have changed, to make it my own version)
"You don't think you're being a little hard on yourself?" I ask, moving more rocks out of the way.
"No, I don't." Danny says, drop dead serious.
"When I was a kid, my parents would go out to eat dinner. If they were late coming home, I used to imagine that they died in a car wreck, just 'cause they were 15 minutes late. And I used to talk to God and beg him. I said, please just take my dad, not my mom, 'Cause I couldn't live without my mom. I mean, every time something good happens in my life, I-I just I think of when it's gonna end. That's all I can think about." He says, as we move through the rubble.
"You for real?" I asked, shocked.
"Yeah." He says, nodding his head.
"That's not normal." I say, laughing a little.
"I know it's not normal. Listen to this. On my wedding day, I'm looking at Rachel, just about to say I do, and all I can see is the day she's gonna serve me with divorce papers. No joke. And I, I don't know, man. The only sustained happiness I ever felt in my life so far is Grace." He says, smiling at the last past.
"And, you know, it's just a matter of time before she turns 18, and then she's out the door and she marries some schmuck. I don't know." He says once again sighing.
"You got to change, man." I say, patting his shoulder.
"You can't live like that." I say, continuing to move.
"Well, I'd like very much to change. It's just not so simple, you know?

Back on the surface – No-ones p.o.v:
"Oh, oh! What the hell was that?" Lou asks. "Damn it. I can't get a hold of them." Catherine says panicked.
"All nonessential personnel, fall back now! Move, move, move! That includes you two." Hank says, walking over to Catherine and Lou.
"We're not going anywhere." Lou says, very sternly.

Back to Steve & Danny – (Steve's p.o.v:)
"What's doing?" Danny asks, as we arrive at the vent, only to find a thick block of rubble blocking it.
"It's too heavy." I say, after trying to shift it.
"You know, I'm trying, uh, really hard to stay positive here. What are you looking for?" Danny says, as I look around.
"I'm looking for that." I say, pointing to the bar above Danny's head.
"You see that piece of pipe hanging over you, Danny? Break it off and seal off one end for me." I ask. He does that and hands me the pipe.
"What are you gonna do with it?" He asks, wondering why I want the pipe.
"This slab of concrete-- I'm gonna blow it up." Danny gets a very shocked expression on his face.
"You're gonna what? How does this not end with both of us dying? You're gonna blow something up?" He asks, clearly panicked. "Called a directional charge. Sends the explosive energy in one direction. Anything that's behind it, theoretically, is reasonably safe." I say, looking at him as I set up the explosive.
"It's, what, reasonably Nothing of what you just said sounds reasonable, okay?" Danny says, grabbing my arm.
"It's the best I could do." I say, putting the pipe in place.
"This gonna work?" Danny asks seriously.
"I don't know. Back up. Get up in there." I say, making him move behind a beam for safety.
"Hold on. Before we do this, I just want you to know one thing." He says, sincerely.
"What?" I asked, curious what he has to say.
"Whatever happens, I really, really from the bottom of my heart, hate you so much." He says, making us both chuckle.
"I love you, too, pal." I say, smiling.
"I guess there's a lot worse people to die under a big pile of concrete with, huh?" He says, sitting back down.
"You want to do the honours?" I ask him.
"No, no. It's your stupid idea-- you do it." He says, as I move next to him.

Back on the surface – No- Ones p.o.v:
"Hold the work! Nobody move! What is that? We got to move out." Hank shouts, after the explosion happens.
"Move, move, move! Give me a light." He says, rushing towards the newly made whole, leading down to under the rubble.
"Let's go." The Five-0 team says, moving towards Hank.
"Pull back." He orders everyone else.
"Hank, you see anything down there? Hank!" Lou says, looking at Hank.
"We got movement." Hank shouts, as more rescue workers run towards the hole.
"Bring up the line now! Go! Bring up the line!" Hanks shouts, as they bring up the line, holding Danny.
"Danny, come on. Come on. Here you go, here you go. I got you. I got you." Chin says, helping Danny away from the hole."
"Steve. You got to get Steve. He's still down there." Danny shouts."
"Let's get that line down there." Hank shouts.
"Hurry up!" Danny screams.
"Let's get that looked at, huh?" Chin as Danny, looking down to the injury site.
"It's coming, Steve. It's coming." Danny shouts again.
"Oh, yeah, come on. This way, this way, this way. Thank God. It's good to see you topside, Commander." Lou says, smiling.
"I never worried, never worried." Chin says.
"I don't doubt it." Steve says chuckling.
"It's good to see you, boss." Kono says, patting his shoulder."
"Guys, thank you." Danny says, happy to be "
"Danno!"
"Uncle Steve!"
Danny and Steve look around and see Grace and Tia running towards them. They move off of the rubble.
"I'm okay, monkey." Danny says, pulling Grace in for an awkward side hug.
"All right. I'm okay. I'm all right." He says, comforting Grace.
Tia runs straight to her Uncle as he wraps his arms around you.
"I'm so glad you're okay. I was so worried." Tia says, wiping away a stray tear.
"I know, I'm sorry, but we're okay." Steve says, rubbing Tia's back. Tia and Grace swap. Tia hugs Danny and Grace hugs Steve.
"Hey monkey, can you stay here with Tia for a minute? I just need to speak to Uncle Steve okay?" Danny asks Grace. She nods her head and waits with Tia. Both girls smile as Steve and Danny step away.
"When we were in there, you said, uh you know, before you did the thing with the bomb, you said what you said." Danny said, trying to explain himself.
"I want you to know, I, I feel the same way." He tries to continue."
"How is that exactly?" Steve says, already knowing what Danny is trying to say, but wanting to hear it himself.
"Gonna make me say it? Come here. I love you." Danny says, hugging his best friend, Steve.
"I love you, buddy." Steve says back, truly meaning every word of it.
"I-I, uh, got to go get this properly stitched up" Danny says, pointing to his injury.
"Yeah, you should." Steve says, chuckling.
"And I'm not coming in to work tomorrow. Or for the rest of the week. I'm going to spend it with Grace"
"Good. Rest up" Steve says, patting Danny's shoulder.
"All right? Call me, if you need anything okay?" Steve asks, giving his best friend another hug, before he walk off towards his daughter and the waiting ambulance.

Steve walks over to Tia, who is with Catherine and slings his arms over their shoulders.
"Let's go home" he says, walking over to his truck. The girls nod before getting into the truck, Steve and Catherine share a kiss before climbing into the front of the truck. The pull away, waving to the rest of the team, heading home. They send the rest of the evening sat eating take-out pizza and snacks on the couch, watching fast and furious 7, before going to bed. It's been a really long day, but luckily no-body died. Tomorrow's a new day. New cases, new events, new decisions.
