Develop Your Writing Contest April 2018

I've chosen to do Sci-fi, hope you enjoy!

Jay opened the door to her pod and yawned, rubbing her eyes. She checked the dial on the wall, 3 circles glowed brightly against the blueish screen.

"Damn it!" Jay whispered. She was way too early again, lately she hadn't been sleeping as well as normal, and it was bugging her. She got into the suit pod and pressed a button, filling it with much needed oxygen.

"Good morning Jay. Today you are 16 years, 360 days, 5 hours and 3 seconds old." came the automated voice of her computer companion, ARLA, or Automated Responsive Living Assistant. "Which suit would you like?" It asked, even though Jay only had three suits, one for sleeping, one for everyday and one for special occasions like being Selected.

"The usual please Arla." she yawned as her suit deflated and taken to be washed by one of Arla's many arms and a new, grey suit was shoved on to her body, this one with the symbol of a Falcon embroidered onto its chest. It inflated and the suit pod opened again as Jay stepped out and styled her long brunette curls into a bun atop her head. She smiled at herself in the mirror, ready for another day aboard the Hypernaught, another day of Team Falcon, and her green eyes sparkled.

"Have a good day, Jay." Came Arla's automated reply. Jay appreciated Arla's help but she wasn't much of a companion, all of her replies were the same, for a real companion, Jay would have to be Selected.

The Selection was a ceremony that happened once every year on the Hypernaught. Every 17 year old on the space station had their name placed into a computer generator. It would analyse its files then choose 20 pairs of teens and they would be placed in a space car and shot out from the station to the nearest planet - four pairs per planet. Then the teens would have to build their own homes and villages until they populate the entire planet. Being Selected meant having a companion for life, it was a joining of two lives into one and, the most exciting part for Jay, it meant adventure.

Jay walked down her usual ship corridors, watching other early risers going about their business. The days on the Hypernaught were all timetabled and everything was ordered and categorised so that the ship ran smoothly. Each inhabitant was issued an ARLA system for their cabins, a watch system and a tablet on which they did all of their work. Jay looked down at her Team Falcon badge and wondered what the Falcon was. She knew it was the symbol for her maintenance team on the ship but this weird creature was completely alien to Jay. It had wings, huge black eyes, a massive yellow beak with a black tip and yellow clawed feet. It glared up at her from the badge and Jay wondered why she'd never seen one before, a real one.

Then something broke her concentration, a shadow flashed across the opposite wall and disappeared around a corner. Jay quickly rushed after it, checking her watch as she walked, fast - but not too fast - so as not to draw attention to herself, 4 circles glowed from the screen on her wrist. "I got time." she thought. Then she caught sight of the shadow again and she picked up the pace, her heart racing, she had never been to this part of the ship before, she rounded a corner and then stopped.

She was in a silent, deserted corridor which had a door at the far end with a single, blinking green light above it. She walked, slowly, towards the door, listening intently for any signs of an oncoming Theta guard. Silence. Jay pressed her ear to the door but heard nothing still so gently pressed her hands to the cold steel and pushed. The door opened and what she saw shocked her more than anything else she had ever seen.
