Twenty

"We're screwed. Completely and utterly screwed. Fucked six ways from Sunday and all that other shit." I started pacing, contemplating jumping off the roof and saving myself from whatever fucking bullshit was awaiting us in the near future.

"Shut up!" Kelly yelled, pressing her fingers to her forehead. I couldn't help it. I didn't want to go to gaol. I'm too innocent for that shit. I'll be eaten alive. Instead of saying any of this, I bit my lip and sat down beside her, my knee immediately bouncing up and down without warning.

"-someone left the keys in her car... but there's no point namin' names at this point, it's done now. So the probation worker is drivin' around with the stiffs in the boot of 'er car. Just thought you'd want to know. Anyway, call me." Nathan pulled the phone away from his ear and dropped the smile from his face. "I left a message," he explained, coming to sit down beside me.

"Well, I guess thats it then," Nathan sighed. "We're goin' to prison."

"Thats where my careers teacher said I'd end up," Kelly said softly, clasping her hands in her lap. "She'll be givin' it all this," she mimed talking with her hand.

"Yeah, well, you'll be alright in prison," I said, turning my head to look at her. "No one in their right mind would fuck with you."

"Yeah, she's right, you're well butch, you know, with the whole bald thing," Nathan added, pointing at her wig. She reached around me and punched him.

"Ow! Ow!" He exclaimed, grabbing at his arm. "Why do you keep hittin' me?!"

"Because you're a dick," she answered angrily. I groaned and stood up, nervousness evident in the way I started pacing... again. You know, maybe she wouldn't find out? No, thats ridiculous. She'll find out, then she'll know it was us and then she'll call the police and then we'll all end up getting gang-raped in the showers or something else like that. Really, whichever way you sliced it, we were screwed.

"I'm not built for prison. I won't last five minutes. I'll be walking into the place and the next thing you know, bam! I'm someones bitch," I cried out. "Don't think you're not included in this either," I said to Nathan, who's smirk was wiped from his face once I made eye contact with him. "We're in the same boat, you and I."

"Maybe Sally won't look in the boot," Simon suggested hopefully.

"Oh, fingers crossed, eh?" Nathan responded sarcastically. Kelly itched at her scalp aggressively before smoothing the hair down.

"Look, its possible, but I doubt it," I sighed, acknowledging Simon with a grim smile. "Look guys, there probably isn't much we can do right now. Sally could be anywhere. We should just go home and see what happens in the morning, yeah?"

"Yeah, alrigh'," Kelly agreed, standing up and shoving her hands into her pockets.

"I guess I'll see you all tomorrow then," I sighed, making my way to the door to the stairs.

"Bye," Simon called out softly. I smiled at him before disappearing down the steps.

I felt nervous on the walk home. I felt guilty, I felt scared, I felt... lonely. You know, I really should have guessed that something would happen. Of course we weren't going to get away with this shit. We were idiots if we thought even for a second that we would. With these nervous thoughts running through my head on a constant reel, I made my way home as quickly as possible.

"Nathan, would you stop fucking pacing," I hissed, whipping my hand out to grip his to stop him from walking back and forth any more. I yanked against his hand and pulled him down to sit beside me.

"Sorry, love. I can't help it," he answered, breathing out deeply. I sighed and dropped his hand. I hadn't realised I was still gripping it.

So, nothing happened that night. No one came knocking at the door to take me away. No one called. Nothing happened at all. In some ways, that was relieving but in others, it just made me more nervous. When morning came, I got up and slowly got dressed, not really wanting to go do my service for the day.

Nathan was already up when I got to the centre, pacing and muttering under his breath. Simon arrived about ten minutes later without a word and just stood by the window. Half an hour later and he was still there.

"Did you get any sleep last night?" I asked Nathan, watching Simon stare out the window.

"No, did you?"

"No."

We waited about another five minutes in silence, nervously jumping every time we heard a noise.

Suddenly there was a loud knocking on the doors and I whipped my head over to see Kelly, Curtis and Alisha outside the doors, waiting for someone to open them. It's about time the fuckers showed up. Maybe if Alisha and Curtis hadn't bailed on us, maybe we wouldn't be in this position right now.

Nathan and I jumped up and he walked swiftly over to let them in. The four of them came to meet Simon and I in the middle of the room. Each of them were wearing similar worried expressions.

"We would have been arrested by now if they found the bodies," Alisha said, breaking the nervous silence. I nodded. That was reasonable. If they knew that there were a group of killers walking around, they wouldn't exactly be likely to let them do so, right?

"Maybe they're waiting until we're all together," Simon said conspiratorially. My mouth dropped.

"What the fuck, Simon?!"

"Yeah, now why would you go and say somethin' like that?" Nathan shrieked, eyebrows furrowed at the strange kid. Simon shut his mouth self-consciously.

"What time does she usually get 'ere?" Kelly asked, looking pointedly at Simon for the answer. Surprisingly, Nathan answered her. "About eight o'clock," he grunted, whipping his phone out of his pocket and checking the time. "She'll be here any minute," he said, looking up at us with wide eyes.

"Lets go then. We'll hide behind the bins, yeah?" I suggested, already walking towards the doors. Everyone followed me.

Three minutes later, the six of us were crouching behind the bins and peering around them to look at the road every couple of minutes.

"Come on, come on," I tapped my foot on the ground nervously. Nathan peered around the bin the two of us were behind and let out an unmanly shriek.

"She's here. Everybody get down!"

I knelt down as quickly as I could and grabbed Nathan's shoulders for balance. I assumed everyone else was out of sight and I crept forward so I could see just over Nathan's mop of curls.

"I can't believe it! She didn't look in the boot!" I whispered to Nathan excitedly.

"It's goin' to be okay! We're not goin' to prison!" Nathan whispered back with a grin, yanking me toward him by my hips and pressing himself to me tightly. I kissed his cheek excitedly without thinking about it. I ignored the look Kelly gave me and looked back to the road, Nathan's arms still around me.

Sally's car pulled up quickly and the engine cut off. I could see her in the window of the car. My joy was short-lived as I saw her sniffing suspiciously. Oh shit! No, no, no!

There was a loud gasping to my left and I glanced over to see Curtis looking wide-eyed at us with his mouth open. That could only mean one thing...

"She's going to get out of the car and look in the boot! She's going to find the bodies," he hissed, motioning for Simon and Alisha to pay attention.

"How do you know?" Nathan accused.

"It's already happened once, hasn't it?" I asked, fear creeping into my skin. He nodded, looking to the carpark again. Sally was getting out of the car and looking around, still sniffing.

Shit, shit, shit!

Nathan then yanked my arms away from him and ignored my alarmed gaze as he picked up a chunk of cement and went around the bins to stand in front of the car. What is he doing? Does he want his service extended?!

"Get the bodies!" He hissed as an afterthought.

I heard the shattering sound of glass being smashed by something and I watched as Nathan grinned at his work. Sally's car's windscreen was smashed, a spiderweb-like pattern engraved in it.

"What the hell are you doing?!" Sally screeched, eyes wide.

"It's just..." he paused, looking for the right words. "Pure, mindless vandalism," he chuckled, waving his arms around. Sally was livid. If this were a cartoon, she'd have steam coming out of her ears and nose.

"What is the matter with you? Are you mentally deficient?!" Sally pointed her car keys at him accusatorially.

"If I was mentally deficient, I'd have missed," Nathan gestured to the car. "Check that out. Bullseye."

"My office. Now!" She hissed angrily. Nathan's smile fell a little.

"Now!" She screamed louder when he didn't move. Nathan jumped a little and started walking towards the centre, throwing a glance back at us before he disappeared around the corner with our probation worker hot on his heels.

I looked at the others and let out a relieved chuckle.

"Well, that was fuckin' intense," I said with a sigh. The others agreed.

"Alright, you guys get the bodies and I'll grab some shovels, yeah?" I suggested. They nodded and we separated to go and do our assignments.

I rushed through the doors to the centre and checked to make sure no one was watching me as I walked into the store room and grabbed five shovels. I had a feeling that Nathan wasn't going to be able to help us much. Sally was going to rip him a new one. I could hear her screaming from outside the centre as I hurried back to the others.

~~~~
"So it's done then?" I checked.
"I fuckin' hope so," Kelly hissed. I chuckled, watching as the cement poured into the foundations.
"You know, I really didn't think we'd get away with it," I said after a moment of silence. No one replied but I knew they agreed with me.
"We probably look suspicious just standin' here, you know?" Curtis speculated. I chuckled but nodded.
"Alright, lets go back. We've got clothes to ship," I said, taking the lead and leading the others back towards the centre.
"That fuckin' storm, mate," Kelly groaned as we started walking away. I chuckled.
"That fucking storm," I agreed.
