Thirteen
The following afternoon, after we had done our daily duty of walking around picking up people's trash, we were forced to go to yet another function for elderly people. I'd noticed that Nathan had been a bit off but every time I tried to talk to him about it, he shut me down. Eventually I gave up.
We were currently dancing with some of the older people. We were laughing, having fun. All of us except Nathan, anyway. He was sitting off to the side chewing on his thumb, his foot bouncing up and down.
I looked at the other members of our group affectionately. Over the last few weeks we had grown much closer. We had all become friends. Even Simon was starting to come out of his shell a little. And the funny thing was, I doubted would be like this if it hadn't been for Tony and The Storm.
I grinned at the man I was dancing with and told him I was going to go sit down. He smiled back, nodded and continued to dance with someone else. I watched for a moment before walking away.
I dragged a chair over beside Nathan and sat down. We were silent for a moment.
"Are you okay?"
"Peachy," he replied, immediately sticking his thumb back in his mouth after he was finished speaking.
"I don't believe you."
"Thats a nice thought, really, but I'm fine," he urged me, eyebrows furrowing nicely. I couldn't help but admire him, looks-wise anyway. He really was a good-looking guy. Usually the whole big and curly hair thing doesn't work on guys but Nathan manages to pull it off.
"Are you sure? Because I'm here if you want to talk. Here, do you want my number?" I asked, getting a napkin and a pen. I wrote down the digits that formed my number and I handed it to him with a little smile.
"Thanks, but I don't do booty calls," he attempted a lame joke. He didn't give it back though. He put it in his pocket and looked away. There was something really wrong with him but I just couldn't figure it out. This would be one of the only reasons that Kelly's power would come in handy.
"Have you had any more ideas on what your power is?" I asked after a moment of silence. He shook his head. I nodded even though he wasn't looking at me.
I looked up to see an old woman slowly making her way towards us with a warm smile plastered on her face. I smiled at her. She seemed nice.
Nathan however, obviously didn't share my opinion. He jumped up and shrieked, speeding away as fast as his legs could carry him. I watched him leave, a gobsmacked expression making its way across my face. What the fuck?! I looked at the old woman to see her smile gone and a heartbroken look in her eye. Where they related or something?
I smiled at her before getting to my feet as well. I followed the way Nathan had gone and started to look for him.
I found him about twenty minutes later under the fly-over. He was smoking, puffing out the grey clouds nervously.
"Hey," I called nervously, walking over to him and sitting down against the beam that he was resting against as well.
"Hey..."
"Look, I realise that you obviously don't really want to talk about it, but I'm worried about you. You've barely been yourself today," I said with a small smile, nudging his shoulder. A hint of a smile graced his features and mine widened.
"Gimme that," I said, gesturing to the cigarette. He looked from it to me for a moment before handing it over. He watched as I took a drag, breathing out the smoke slowly.
"Would y'ah look at that," he grinned. "Good girl no more, ey?"
I chuckled, taking another drag before handing it back to him.
"Its your fault, you know," I said, looking over at him. "Natalie is not going to be pleased," I added, thinking about my sister.
"Who's Natalie?" He asked, offering me the cigarette. I took it.
"My sister," I responded.
"I didn't know you had a sister. Hey, you should set me 'n her up, yeah?" He joked. I felt a pang in my heart and my thought process faltered. What did that mean?
"Why?"
"You gotta know that 'er man will treat her right, don't you," he said. "And you know me, so there, problem solved," he chuckled, taking the cigarette.
"I'm pretty sure her current boyfriend might have an issue with that," I answered. He smiled.
"Only if he doesn't know."
We sat in silence, Nathan smoking his cigarette and occasionally offering me a drag, which I took gratefully. We didn't say much. We didn't need to. Nathan didn't want to and I didn't mind the silence. It was nice. He was still jumpy and nervous.
"Hey, what happened to you?" I heard a voice ask. I looked over and saw the rest of our rag-tag group walking toward us. They were all wearing their jumpsuits and had trash-grabbers.
"I will not be in a room where that song is playin'," Nathan said. "Line in the sand, my friend."
"Some old woman was lookin' for you," Kelly said, looking him up and down. Nathan looked up at her for a second and then bit his thumb. What was going on?
"You shagged 'er?!" Kelly exclaimed in horror. My face contorted into confusion and I looked at Nathan. That old woman, he what?!
"Yeah, good one, I gave her a right good seein' too," he replied, giving her a nervous smile and bouncing slightly on the ground, imitating his... actions. My mouth fell open.
"Oh..." She groaned in disgust. The others watched them closely, also making disgusted faces.
"You totally screwed her," Alisha accused. I grimaced. God, thats disgusting.
"No," Nathan tried to protest, standing up.
"Are you into that?" Curtis asked, face screwing up.
"No!"
I watched them all interact. I stood up after a second, back bumping into the beam on the way.
"Did you enjoy it?" Simon asked, small grin on his lips. Nathan glared.
"I think he enjoyed it," he said, looking at the rest of the group. It was a strange day when Simon was the one picking on Nathan and not the other way around. The rest of them laughed.
"No! Look, she didn't look like that when we started, okay?! It was the storm. It made her young again," he paused. "Remember that bird Ruth? From Tuesday? Beautiful," he continued, moving his hands to imitate her curves. "That wrinkly old bint, thats her!"
I bit my lip, feeling awful for him. This wasn't fair. I mean, I don't think it is. He is constantly teasing us so I'm not sure who's side I'm on in this.
"Please," Alisha grinned. "Please tell me you didn't," she brought her hand up to her mouth, making a 'V' with one of her fingers and moving her tongue between them. Nathan winced and that said it all. Everyone but him and I began to laugh.
"He did! Gods sake!" Alisha cried out in laughter. Nathan's face fell and he shook his head, taking a drag of his cigarette and walking off.
"You can all just fuck off then," he hissed. I watched him walk down the hill. Kelly followed.
She stopped him and they had a quick conversation before he started walking away again.
"Granny Fucker!" She screamed at him before making her way back toward us. I winced, watching his retreating figure. He threw the cigarette away and stormed off out of sight.
"Geez, I hope he's alright," I said quietly.
"He's fine," Kelly chuckled. I didn't think so though. I've never seen anything upset him before. Not like this. If you say something offensive to him, he just bounces back off it. It's like he's impervious to ridicule. Not today though. What the others said to him today upset him and that was a side I've never seen in him before. It worried me a little bit.
