Eighteen

To ease any suspicion we may have caused during our tight little meeting earlier, after we had finished our community service for the day, we all went home and waited until the sun went down to come back and move the bodies.

Once we were all there, we started to pack some of the things we would need. Shovels, blankets, rope and other stuff like that.

"So what do we do with them once we dig 'em up?" Alisha asked, closing the boot of her dads car.

"We..." Curtis thought for a moment. "Weigh 'em down and toss them in the lake."

"We do that and you know what the council decides to do next week? 'Oh, lets drag the river!' No, its too predictable."

"Yeah, so we bury them somewhere else," I said, shrugging my shoulders and getting into the car.

"Enough with the diggin' and the burryin' already," Nathan groaned.

"What else are we supposed to do with them then?"

"How about," he licked his lips and raised his hands out wide. "We boil them in a bath of sulphuric acid, serial-killer style," he grinned, raising his eyebrows as though we would all jump on board with that plan immediately.

"We could store them in the Community Centre until we decide what to do with them," Simon suggested.

"Oh, yeah, because storing two dead bodies where you are required to be five days out of seven is a good idea," I said, rolling my eyes.

"She's right. I mean, its not like they have a special store room for storing rotting corpses," Curtis agreed, getting into the car and slamming the door.

Kelly sat in between the both of us and Simon had to sit on my lap, much to my annoyance.

"Buy me a drink first," I joked, shifting slightly so I was a little more comfortable.

"There's a disused store room upstairs, I've got a key," Nathan said from his seat in the front. Wait, why did he have a key? Surely Sally wouldn't trust someone like Nathan with a key to anything.

"Why've you got a key?" I asked, leaning around Simon to look at him. He bit his lip slightly before answering.

"I nicked 'em because I'm livin' in the Community Centre," he snapped, whipping around to look at us. "Happy? Big secret revealed. Yeah," he waved his hands. I frowned. How long has this been going on. Surely he must have somewhere to stay. Like, at his parents' or something. Unless they kicked him out. That would make sense, he is a twat. Everyone chuckled, as though someone being homeless is something to laugh at.

"You wouldn't be laughing if that was you," I said, sufficiently shutting them up. Yeah, thats what I thought.

"Hey, this is a sweet ride," Nathan said, smiling at Alisha. She said nothing, and just merely started the car.

The smell was unbearable.

"You know, I'm really getting tired of all this digging and burying of bodies. Next time y'all can do it by yourselves," I huffed, sinking the shovel into the ground. I coughed, having smelt a particularly bad whiff of corpse. Jesus, we must be close.

I stopped digging again and puffed, wiping my forehead from the sweat accumulating there.

"Why am I the only girl doing the hard work, huh?"

"Because you picked up a shovel and no one stopped you," Alisha answered, bringing over some blankets. Right, that makes sense.

"Oh, man, it stinks," Curtis whined, pressing his hand to his nose.

"Yeah, that happens when you dig up a rotting body!" I hissed, glaring at him.

Nathan collapsed onto his knees, dry-heaving and gagging from the smell. Oh my god, they were all such pansies. He swallowed thickly and stood up again.

"I'm fine, no one do anything too dramatic," he said, giving a small tired smirk.

"Prick," Curtis hissed, pushing his own shovel into the ground. This whole killing people thing and digging their graves up better be a one time thing, I swear.

Nathan picked up his shovel and all but threw it into the ground. It made a disgusting squelching noise and I grimaced at the new onslaught of smell.

"I got somethin'," Nathan said, scraping the ground with his shovel. We all crowded around to see. A hand appeared, coming loose from its place. I retched, seeing the light film of filth on it.

"Oops," Nathan gasped.

"Oh, man, thats disgustin'," Curtis moaned.

We dug up the rest of the bodies and let Simon tie them up in the rope and blankets. I watched from a distance, having done all I really could stomach for the night. God, I needed a shower.

"Forgetting something, are we?" Nathan asked as the others finally got the bodies into the back of Alisha's fathers car. Yeah, she's never getting the smell out of there. Nathan held up the hand and grinned. Curtis stepped away from the boot, allowing him to chuck it in. Nathan threw it but it ended up landing on the front of the car, startling the others. He ran around and picked it up, waving it at them through the window as he apologised.

"Twat," I whispered as I got into the car. This time it was me on Simon's lap and I could tell that neither of us were entirely happy about this. Or maybe he was, and he was just nervous or something. I don't know.

The drive back was awkward, and smelly. The stench from the back of the car seemed to seep through. The fact that we'd all been touching them and whatnot didn't help either. We all probably smelt like corpses.

Getting both bodies to the upstairs unused storeroom proved to be quite difficult. They seemed to get heavier with each minute that we held them. Tony, the probation worker was the worst. If I never have to move a body again, thats fine with me. Of course, I knew that wouldn't be the case. We still had to move them out of the centre. We couldn't exactly leave them here.

"Fuck me, this bastard's heavy," I groaned, yanking the body up higher so I could get a better grip.

"That can be arranged, love," Nathan said. I could hear the smirk in his voice.

"Twat."

We made it to the storeroom and Nathan let go of the body and let it fall to the ground without warning. I groaned, trying to help carry the extra weight I was now burdened with. He got the key out of his jacket pocket and put it in the lock, opening it and shoving the door open.

We started to move forward, dragging the body inside.

"Hey, I like your cap," Nathan said, grabbing it from Kelly's head. Except, her hair came with it.

"No!"

She looked at us with a horrified expression plastered on her face. We looked on with confusion. Then she turned and ran back down the hallway without another word, not even stopping to yank her cap and wig from Nathan's hand.

"Did you know she was bald?" Simon asked timidly.

"No!... twat," he answered, looking at the objects in his hand.

"She looked like an alien," Alisha observed with a low chuckle.

"Ah, don't be mean!" Nathan replied. He was silent for a moment before he couldn't not laugh any more. Everyone but Simon and I started giggling. Simon did however give a small smile.

"You know, you don't find anything funny," Alisha said, turning to me.

"Not when its at another's expense, no," I answered. She glared at me before looking to Curtis.

"Well, I better go find her," Nathan said awkwardly. "You know, to give these back," he waved the cap and wig before walking down the hallway.

I watched as Curtis and Alisha sent each other some awkward glances and I realised they wanted to talk. Or, at least, Alisha did.

"Come on, Simon," I said, trying to give them what they wanted. Simon looked at me confusedly but followed me down the hall.

"What is it?" He asked after we were in another room.

"They wanted to talk," I answered.

"Oh." He looked disappointed, sad even.

"We haven't really had a good chance to talk, have we?" I asked, smiling a little at him. He shook his head.

"We should hang out sometime," I said, patting his shoulder.

"Yes, we can go for a drink... or, or, something," Simon stuttered, not wanting to seem too eager. I grinned and nodded.

"That sounds like fun."

I nodded and sighed.

"I'm beat. I think I'm going to go home and have a shower," I said after a moment of silence. He nodded and gave me a hesitant smile.

"Night," I said, walking towards the door.

"Goodnight," he answered softly.
