Eight

Getting changed the following Monday felt weird. Granted, it was only our third day of community service and we hadn't exactly known each other very long but our horrific shared experience made it a little awkward at first.

I was waiting in the main area of the building. I had arrived pretty early and was ready by the time anyone else had shown up. I had my phone on. I was texting Natalie. She had asked where I had gone so early and I told her I wanted to go for a walk before my service.

"You're here early," Nathan commented, followed by Curtis and Simon. I shrugged, playing with the string on the jumpsuit.

"You alright?" He asked me, walking over to the vending machine. I nodded hesitantly. Not really, no. I'm not okay. We murdered our probation worker. Why would I be okay?

Another half and hour and Kelly and Alisha showed up, got changed and joined us. We sat around and talked for a while, joking and teasing each other. I stayed quiet.

"Excuse me, may I have a word with you guys?" A female voice asked. I looked up to see a woman in her early thirties standing in front of us. She was fiddling with her hands and she looked upset.

"Sure," Curtis said.

We got up and waited for her to start talking.

"Gary and my colleague Tony have both been reported missing," she started. I felt my blood run cold. Oh no.

"Their families are very worried about them," she added after a moment.

"Have you seen anything unusual? Anything at all?" She stressed, looking at each of us individually. I averted my eyes, not trusting myself.

"You saw something?" She asked hopefully. I looked up in alarm. Nathan had his hand raised and he nodded.

"A few days ago..." he started, rubbing his nose once. "I go into the toilets and Gary and Tony are in there, butt naked."

For fucks sake, Nathan. Now isn't the time for your insensitive jokes.

"Tony has Gary by his hair, like this," he grips the back of his head with one hand. "And he's just doin' him, doggy style," he continues, bobbing a little, imitating what he says they were doing. I sighed and shook my head.

"And Tony's like, "oh, who's your daddy? I'm your daddy, I'm Big Daddy."" Nathan brings his hand thats not gripping Gary's imaginary hips and thrusts his hand back and forth. ""Oh, you like that? Oh, yeah, oh, yeah, oh, yeah, oh, I'm Daddy Cool," he makes one last loud groan and looks seriously at the woman. "So, I think they've ran away to continue their illicit homosexual affair," he looks thoughtfully at the ceiling and then glances at the woman again. She does not look impressed.

"And I ask you, in this world of intolerance and prejudice, who are we, who are we, to condemn them?!"

The woman looks like she's about to cry as she walks off, back to her office most likely. The rest of us look at Nathan.

"That was uncalled for," I said.

"It worked, didn't it? She's not askin' us any more questions, is she?"

"You could have just said no," I said, glaring at him.

"Yeah, well, bit late for that now."

At the end of the day, all six of us stood on the roof of the centre, looking out at the lake. Nathan was smoking. He offered me a drag but I declined. I was never one for smoking.

Downstairs, the woman from earlier walked out to the bannister, also looking out at the lake. Then, a moment later, she walked away towards the carpark, sending us a glare as she went.

"I think we got away with it," Nathan took a drag of his cigarette.

"Do you actually believe that or are you just really stupid?" Curtis asked, giving him a look.

"I actually believe that," he answered, smirking.

"I mean, I was there, I should have one of these bullshit powers," Nathan whined, puffing out a large cloud of smoke.

"You can have mine. You want to hear what people are thinking about you?" Kelly asked, glaring at him.

"Not really, no. I want something good. Something off the A-List," he said, smoke blowing from his mouth with every word.

"Maybe you can fly," Simon suggested helpfully.

"Yeah, yeah, theres always someone who can fly!" Nathan exclaimed. I shook my head.

"You're not going to be able to fly," I yelled to him as he handed me his cigarette and walked over to a chair a couple meters behind us. I chuckled as he stood on it.

"Check this out," he said. I shook my head as he jumped off and landed a little crookedly on his feet. He limped back over to us and took his cigarette back.

"Nope, its not that," Nathan grunted, taking a drag.

"So what happens now? Is this it?" Curtis asked. "Are we going to be like this forever?"

"What if we're meant to be, like, superheroes?" Simon asked, taking a sip of whatever he was drinking. Beer, I think it is.

"You lot, superheroes?" Nathan chuckled. "No offence but in what kind of fucked-up world would that be allowed to happen?"

I did not sign up for that," Alisha said.

"Superheroes. I love this guy. You prick," Nathan turned on Simon.

"What if there are loads of people like us all over town?" Kelly asked, looking over the lake to the large buildings beyond.

"No, that kind of thing only happens in America," Nathan said, puffing more smoke. "This time next week, it'll be back to the same old boring shit."
