the proposition

Cliff grabbed Bobby's hand in his.

"Hey man, that hurts."

Cliff squeezed harder.

"Don't ever touch me again."

Bobby grimaced in pain.

"You're crushing my hand man."

Cliff smiled.

"No, Bobby."

He squeezed even harder.

"This is crushing."

Bobby yelled, as the sound of bones breaking, could be heard.

"You broke my fingers."

Cliff let go of his hand and patted Bobby on the back.

"Man up, Bobby."

He turned to Colin.

Colin put up his hands.

"Hey man. I just want out of this crazy house."

"Sit, Colin," Gwen ordered.

Colin slid down the wall and sat on the floor.

Bonnie bounced to her uncle and aunt.

"This was fun. But I have to go to school in the morning."

She kissed them both on the cheek.

"Have a good night, sweetie," Gwen smiled, behind her, as she left.

The smile left, as she turned back to Bobby.

"You have really disappointed us, Bobby."

Tears were falling down Bobby's cheek.

"I'm sorry, Gwen. Really, I am."

He sounded sincere.

"I tell you what. Let's call this a freebie and I will start work right away on next months quota."

Cliff turned and walked away.

"I don't know, Bobby."

He walked past Arnold, who was sitting quietly in the chair.

"Would you like a drink, Arnie?"

Arnold swallowed hard, slightly nodding his head.

Cliff pointed to the bar.

"Help yourself, Arnie."

He walked to the window and looked outside.

"Nice ride there Bobby."

"Thanks," Bobby moaned.

"A little flashy though, isn't it?

Is that a Porsche?"

Bobby nodded.

"A Macan turbo."

Cliff nodded as he turned from the window.

"Nice ride."

He held out his hand.

"The keys."

"What?"

"The keys Bobby."

Bobby hesitated.

"Give me the fucking keys," Cliff yelled.

Bobby struggled with the keys, as his right hand was mangled.

Gwen turned to her husband.

"No need to yell, hun. We don't want to wake the kids.

They have had such a trying night, already."

"Sorry sweetie."

Cliff walked to Bobby and took the keys from his pocket.

"Is the registration and such in the car?"

Bobby nodded.

"In the glovebox."

Cliff tossed the keys to Arnold.

"Will you go out to the car and get the registration."

Arnold walked to Cliff, shaking slightly.

Cliff put his arm around Arnold.

"You're doing great, Arnie.

Just don't try and run away."

Arnold shook his head furiously.

"I will be right back."

He stopped in the entranceway.

"Go on," Gwen assured him.

"The door is unlocked."

Arnold nodded and hurried off.

Cliff pushed Bobby toward the chair, where Stanley had been sitting.

"Have a seat, Bobby."

Bobby sat quickly in the chair, which was facing the room again.

Cliff turned to Colin.

"You over there, where I can see both of you."

Colin crawled across the floor and sat against the side of the chair.

He looked up at Bobby.

"What the fuck have you gotten me into?"

Cliff walked to the bar.

"Yes, Bobby.

What ... have ... you gotten poor Colin into?"

"Sorry man," Bobby apologized.

"They made me do it."

"We didn't make you do anything, Bobby," Gwen reminded him.

"You begged us to spare your life.

If memory serves me well, you were on your hands and knees, crying."

"You tore ..."

Cliff put up his hand as he heard the front door close.

"Not now. Annie is back."

"What the fuck do I care about that fat fuck," Bobby snapped.

Stanley suddenly appeared in front of Bobby.

"I like Arnold," Stanley smirked.

"I find him amusing."

He bent over, so his face was mere inches from Bobby's.

"But I never did like you."

Stanley jabbed Bobby in the face.

Bobby's head snapped back and blood began pouring from his nose.

"You broke my fucking nose."

Stanley smiled.

"That was for calling Arnold, a fat fuck."

"Stanley?"

"Sorry, Mommy."

Arnold was standing in the doorway.

"I have the registration."

"Excellent," Cliff chirped, as he came around the bar, drinks in hand.

He passed one to Gwen and one to Arnold.

As he took the papers from Arnold, he raised his glass.

"To a new partnership."

Gwen and Cliff clinked glasses.

They both looked at Arnold.

"You too, Arnie," Cliff told him.

Arnold clinked their glasses.

"Cheers?"

"Cheers," Gwen and Cliff said in unison.

"I need a towel," Bobby cried.

"Oh for fuck sake," Gwen groaned.

"Stanley, will you get the baby a towel or something."

Stanley took off his t-shirt and threw it in Bobby's face.

"Honey? Not another of your good shirts."

Stanley turned to his mother.

"Not to worry, Mommy.

Its Peaches' shirt," he smiled.

"I heard that," came Peaches' voice from upstairs.

Stanley laughed slightly, as he put his arm around Arnold.

"You are cool, Arnie. Gonna like having you around."

He waved to his parents.

"Night."

And with that, he was gone.

Arnold finished his drink.

"Would you like another one, Arnie?" Cliff offered.

"Am I gonna die?" Arnold wondered.

Cliff took his glass, laughing.

"I hope not, Arnie, but I guess that kinda depends on you."

He walked to the bar and poured two more drinks. He put one on the bar and patted the top of the bar.

"Come here to the bar, Arnie."

Arnold walked slowly to the bar.

"So, you are married?"

Arnold nodded.

"What's your wife's name?"

"Teresa," Arnold whispered.

"Speak up, Arnie," Gwen asked, as she walked to the bar.

He gulped his drink.

"Teresa.

Her name is Teresa."

"Pretty name," Gwen smiled.

"How long have you been married?"

"Ten years," Arnold stammered.

"And you have a child?"

Arnold nodded.

"Dani. She is eight years old."

Gwen smiled.

"Such a wonderful age.

Do you have a picture?"

"She's probably a fat fuck, like him," Colin muttered.

Cliff glared at Colin.

"What did you just say?"

"Nothing."

Arnold took out his wallet and showed a picture of his wife and child.

"They are both beautiful," Gwen sighed.

Arnold nodded.

"I don't know what she saw in me."

"Probably couldn't see around you," Colin snarled.

"Shut up," Arnold yelled, as he snapped around.

"Say what you want about me, but you say nothing about my Teresa and Dani."

Colin just smirked.

"How did you ever get wrapped up with him?" Gwen wondered.

"I met him at a bar," Arnold said.

"He made me a proposition.

I lost my job a while back and things were really tight. I didn't want to lose my family, so I agreed to do a couple B&Es with Colin.

Just as a lookout.

He told me this was an easy job.

I swear, I didn't want to do it, but he made me. Said he would tell Teresa, if I didn't.

This is not for me. I am an accountant, by trade."

"So why did you lose your job, Arnie?"

"Downsizing. And the economy around here is really bad right now, with the oil prices the way they are."

Cliff nodded.

"I know what you are saying, Arnie. So many people looking for work. So few jobs."

He turned to Gwen.

"But in a way, that is good for us."

"Indeed, sweetie. So many bad men out there."

"I didn't want to get involved in all of this," Arnold continued.

"But what was I to do? I had to look after my family."

Cliff nodded.

"Family first, Arnie."

He smiled at Gwen.

"Always family first."

He turned back to Arnold.

"So we have a proposition for you, Arnie. We have a position that just opened up."

Bobby jumped up from the chair.

"No. No fucking way. We had a deal."

"Stop bleeding on my floor," Gwen snapped.

She walked toward Bobby, but he pushed her aside.

This time, it was Peaches who mysteriously appeared.

She grabbed Bobby by the throat.

"You never touch my mother."

Bobby started choking and swatting at Peaches with both hands, but to no avail.

Gwen patted Peaches' shoulder.

"Not yet, sweetie."

Peaches pushed Bobby backwards.

He soared across the ten feet to the armchair, hitting it hard and knocking it over.

There was a groan.

Colin jumped to his feet.

"What the fuck?

Who are you people?"

Cliff pointed to the floor.

"Sit, Colin."

Colin slumped to the floor.

Gwen kissed her daughter's cheek.

"Sweetie, your shirt is all full of blood."

Peaches smiled.

"Its Stanley's shirt."

With that, she again disappeared.

Gwen turned smiling.

"Children are such delights, aren't they Arnie?"

He nodded.

Gwen picked up her drink.

"So Arnie. We have a proposition for you."
