Chapter 6 - Teacher
In my mind I imagined running at her and swinging this piece of wood at her face, the connection sending vibrations up my arm as I grinned but in reality I had to just stand there. Just stand there and watch as she paraded around obviously desperate for the attention of the three men standing in the ring. You don't want to go back to Court, Chloe, it's not worth it. What brought me some satisfaction was knowing that Nikki was wrong. I didn't need to impress anyone with my body because they were already impressed. They weren't comparing Nikki and I because there was no competition. I wasn't boasting, I was being truthful. If you spent every day of your life from your teens until this very day lifting heavy objects, running from cops and mobs, fighting and whatever else Eli managed to get us to do, you would look like me; slim yet tough and muscular. I'd fought my way out of many scenarios and I'd happily do them again. Luckily for me, this was the first and only time I'd gotten caught.
"You won't look very good with this plank of wood wrapped around your plastic face." I muttered under my breath as I carried on my work, regrettably throwing that wood in the bin.
"Dean, would you be a darling and hold the punch bag for me while I work out?" Nikki's voice grated at me from across the room. I looked over and saw her standing in front of him, batting her eyelashes in the hope her looks would be enough for Dean to help her.
"I'm a bit busy at the moment, Nik, I'm practicing for my match tomorrow." Dean said, scratching the back of his head awkwardly. "Can't Brie do it?" Brie nodded but Nikki shot her a glare to which Brie stopped and began shaking her head.
"She's gotta practice too. It's a tag match." Nikki said as if it was common knowledge, twisting a piece of hair around her finger. She was like a child, she wouldn't accept no as the answer. "Roman? Seth?" They both looked at each other and then shook their heads.
"How about Chloe?" Seth pointed over to me. "She's got more than enough time." Seth smirked at me as I shot him a glare.
"Her? I need someone who actually knows how to hold a bag!" Nikki sneered. She flicked her hair in my direction and looked back at the men. I jumped down from the ring and walked over, wishing I still had that piece of wood in my hands.
"Did you need me?" I played dumb, pretending I hadn't heard Nikki's comments. She slowly looked over to me, her lips pursed and her eyebrows raised.
"No." She said shortly.
"Nikki, it's her or no one." Brie reminded her, pointing over to the punch bags hanging from what I could only describe as scaffolding. "We've got a match tomorrow. I need to practice." Nikki gestured towards me as if to say 'she's all yours'. "Do you mind?" Brie looked at me with a soft smile. She didn't want to come across too nice to me in front of her sister. I nodded and walked with her to one of the bags which I held. Brie threw a few punches and kicks at it, but they seemed soft and limp.
"I know you can hit it harder than that." I said honestly, but my tone came off a little harsher than I'd meant it to. Brie stopped mid punch and looked round the bag at me.
"Excuse me?"
"I said I know you can hit harder than that. You're athletic and fit and strong, you could power through this bag." I repeated, expanding what I meant so it didn't come across as rude this time. She offered me a smile. I got a set of gloves from a box behind me that I'd seen others delve into in my few hours of being here and handed them to her. She looked at me cautiously as she put them on, unsure where I was going with this. I walked around the bag so I was next to her.
"You're teaching me now?" She raised an eyebrow at me and put a gloved hand on her hip. The bitchy side of her mimicked her sister's and I despised it.
"Only if you want it. Otherwise, just keep hitting that bag weakly..." I stepped forwards but she quickly grabbed my arm and pulled me back.
"Ok fine. What is it I'm doing wrong?" She looked at me pleadingly, as if her life depended on knowing this one secret. It wasn't even a secret, merely technique. I'd been in a lot of fist fights, so I knew what hurt and what didn't. These wrestlers don't need to hit each other as much so they're less likely to know about placement or technique.
"Right, you need to get in position. Keep your chin down and your hands covering your face. Have your knees bent slightly so that you're balanced. Got it?" Brie got into position and nodded. "Next, you need to push off with your back foot. You're going to generate more power with your elbow, but this is an important first step in gaining momentum." I said, like her coach. Just like Eli had said to me all those years ago when he taught me to fight and defend myself. Brie copied as I'd said and threw a punch into the bag with such force it swung away as far as the chain would let it, before swinging back at us. I grabbed it just before it hit us both and kept it still.
"Wow. That did feel different." Brie said with a huge grin on her face. I ran back round to the other side of the bag and held it as she powered punches through the bag. It was only as Brie was hammering the bag that I looked up and noticed the three men and Nikki all staring over at us. The three men were all smiling, as if they were impressed with me, but Nikki had her resting bitch face on.
"Ok Brie, I think we're done here." She said, jumping down from the ring and walking over to Brie. She took a hold of her arm but Brie snatched it back.
"Do you want us to win this match tomorrow?" Brie snapped to Nikki's surprise.
"What?" She replied in shock. "Of course I do!" Nikki folded her arms and rolled her eyes as if it was a stupid question. Brie took the gloves off that she was using and threw them to Nikki.
"Well there you go then. Practice." Brie said, gesturing towards the bag I was holding. Nikki looked around at everyone as we all awaited her reply. I half expected her to throw the gloves in my face and storm off like a toddler but luckily for everyone, she just put them on and began punching the bag. Once again, I was witnessing a woman with tonnes of power but without the knowledge of how to use it.
"You can hit harder than that. You've got a lot of power there but you could use more." I said, just as I had to Brie seconds before. Brie's face lit up and she looked over at Nikki, hoping she would take those few seconds to learn from me and become even better.
"I don't need someone like you telling me how to punch." Nikki hissed, smacking the bag in anger but injuring her wrist. She let out an angered yell and clutched at it, biting her lips together. "Every time I'm around you, you hurt me!" She shouted at me, shoving the bag at me. I let it hit off me and hang back in its starting position. I needed to stay calm this time and not get myself into any more trouble.
"I didn't do that, Nikki. You punched the bag wrong." I stated, holding my hands up in innocence. Once again she shoved the bag at me but this time it came at me with force and I stumbled backwards into the box that held all the gloves. I stood up quickly, my eyes widened, the adrenaline pumping through my veins as quickly as my heart could pump it, I clenched my fists and walked over to her, standing inches from her. "Stay away from me, Nikki." I warned. "Because I won't be able to hold onto this anger for much longer." I breathed in and out deeply, desperate to calm myself down. The guys had already jumped down from the ring and come over to us just in case they needed to break up a fight. Nikki simply smirked at me.
"I'm not scared of you." She said, shoving me backwards. Before I really knew what I was doing, I leapt at her, shoving her with all my might and I watched as she stumbled backwards and fell onto her bum. The guys instantly jumped into action and got between us as Nikki was helped up by Brie. Nikki ran at them, attempting to jump over the guys to grab me but she was fighting a losing battle. Seth and Roman kept a hold of her and without a second glance walked her and Brie out of the training room.
I was going to get in trouble for this.
