Chapter 15 - The Guy
Roman's POV
Chloe finished work in ten minutes and I couldn't find Dean. I needed to tell him what I'd found out, see what his reaction was and then possibly help Chloe home to make sure no one attacked her again.
"Dean!" I shouted as I flung the door to the gym open, a few pairs of eyes falling on me instantly. "Anyone seen Dean?" Every second was a delay I didn't need. I was under pressure and on a time limit. Come on guys, I don't have time for this!
"I think I saw him head to the cafeteria." Natalya said half way through a bench press. "He went there with Lana." You're joking me, right? While I get the job of interrogating Chloe about her life, Dean's off with Lana? They must have this wrong.
"Thanks Nattie." I said, just wanting to be polite as I shot back out of the door and along the corridor to the cafeteria. My mind flashed back to when I was with Chloe, dragging her down this hallway with blood falling from her eyebrow and her cheek, her cheekbone bruised and her arms battered. All I kept feeling when I looked at her was fear, fear for her safety. I know we were acting but those injuries weren't fake, they were real, and every time I looked at her my stomach dropped. How could someone do that to her? How could someone wield a weapon and think it's acceptable to hit a girl with it? There were people like this in the world? We'd been brainwashed into thinking the world was a safe place. We'd fly to different countries, do shows and see the sights for a bit without any problems, just people taking photos and getting autographs. The place we always came back to for safety was the place we'd just witnessed someone get beaten up in. We fear other parts of the world when right on our doorstep, some groups are willing to fight people with weapons and not care about the consequences. Once again, I shoved the doors open.
"Dean?" I shouted, more eyes greeted me but not Dean's. "Anyone seen Dean?"
"He went back to his dressing room." Dolph called out as he stood up and made his way over to me. "Everything alright?" He asked once he was by my side.
"Possibly not." I said as I turned away and headed to Dean's dressing room, now with Dolph by my side.
"Is this about Chloe?" Dolph kept on. I wanted to answer him and explain everything and have another person on our team in case we did have to go after Chloe, but right now by brain was in such a mess I couldn't even speak. I needed to find Dean and I needed to find him quickly. We arrived at his door within seconds and I barged in, not even worrying about what I might be interrupting.
"I need to talk to you." I said as I flung the door open to see Dean comforting Lana. Once again I wanted to ask what was wrong and be a good colleague but I just couldn't focus right now. I needed Dean to know everything I did and we needed to work out what we were going to do. Dean looked up and at me, obviously noticing the concern on my face. He removed his arm from Lana's shoulders and stood up.
"Dolph, look after Lana for me. I just need to talk to Roman." I shot a glare over to Dolph as he stepped foot into Dean's room. He stared at me for a second.
"Lana, do you want to come back to my dressing room? We can talk better there." Dolph asked and a tearful Lana nodded, walking out of the room with Dolph and leaving the two of us in his room. I slammed the door shut and ran my fingers through my hair. How was I going to start this? We didn't have long.
"Just tell me everything." Dean said, leaning against the table in his room.
"She was attacked by a group of four men who beat her with planks of wood. She's had fights with them before but always come out on top. She told me she beat them with a tin bin lid, a wheelie bin and a plank of wood... Alone." I rambled off, praying I hadn't missed any information.
"She's obviously covering for someone!" Dean exclaimed. "No way could anyone, not even Ryback or Brock Lesnar, beat four men with weapons on their own."
"I know, I'm not an idiot." I huffed, angry that that was the best he could come up with. I must have been missing a crucial bit of information. There must be something that helped us find out who she was covering for. "I said to her we knew she didn't wreck this place on her own and her jaw dropped, she was shocked we'd managed to figure that out but then again it's not difficult. I saw how long it took her to make that ring crumble, there was no way she did all that damage that night." I tapped my foot on the floor nervously. I was missing something, but what?
"Ok, think back. You lost your phone and she found it under the ring, right?" Dean thought back.
"Right."
"Then we were going to go for food and I had to get something from my locker, right?" Dean continued, replaying what happened in his head.
"Yeah."
"She was fine then. The next time I saw her she was injured. Help me fill in the blanks." Dean urged. I wracked my brains, desperate to think of the events that unfolded. I replayed the scene over and over in my head. What did happen?
"I thanked her for not telling you guys that I'd pleaded with her not to fight Nikki. I gave her my number and said if she needed anything to call me. I owed her for keeping it quiet. Then she asked me if I had my eye on Nikki and that's why I didn't want them to fight and I said no..." My eyes widened. How could I forget that? Roman you idiot! "She got a phone call." Dean's eyes widened in the same way.
"She took a phone call when I was with her too, after we'd spoken to Steph." We both looked at each other in a way that meant we must have been onto something. Come on Roman, what name did she use? I replayed that moment in my head. It began with D... What was it? Come on! This could be the one bit of information we needed! My body tensed and my mind ran through every name I could think of; Daniel? David? Dean?
"Darren." I shouted out, my body relaxing in relief of remembering the name. Dean's jaw dropped open.
"She spoke to Darren when I was with her too. She said it was one of her friends." Dean said, adding to it.
"She didn't say much, just asked him what had happened and then said she was on her way. She came back from that covered in injuries." It had dawned on us both. We had our guy. The guy that got her into that fight and more than likely the guy who had helped her break into this place. We needed to speak to her and we needed to do it now. She needed to get as far away from that guy as possible. Without another word, we both looked at each other and ran out of the room, through the corridors until we shoved the doors open to the training room. The familiar bang echoed as the doors hit the walls and closed again. We looked around the room and towards that broken ring but she wasn't there. We turned and ran back out, stopping at Ingrid.
"Ingrid, has Chloe gone?" She hesitated and thought about who Chloe could have been.
"The girl on community service!" Dean spat at her, in the hope she'd hurry up.
"Oh her. Yeah she signed out a couple of minutes ago." We both spun round and looked out of the glass doors to the car park and watched as a small car, driven by Chloe, left the parking space and drove out, onto the road and away from us.
