Chapter 12 - Lies and Stories
"I can't believe we're doing this..." Roman sighed, shaking his head. We were about to put our acting skills to the test and make it seem like these injuries came from that ring. I checked myself in the reflection of my phone screen and rubbed over my two facial injuries, making sure they looked fresh. It seemed like a stupid thing to do but if it stopped me going to court, I was more than happy to do it. I felt the blood tricking down my face and sighed. We were about to burst out of these doors and make a scene. Roman had run along to the Medic's room and had seen it empty, meaning they were in the cafeteria with a load of employees.
"I can't thank you enough for this." I said quickly, flashing him a quick smile.
"A favour for a favour." He replied, voicing my earlier thoughts. I did wonder though, if any part of him was doing this because he thought I was a decent person and not just because I'd helped him before.
"Alright. Let's do this." I rubbed my hands together and took a deep breath in and out. I prayed this would work, but I knew there could be a chance someone wouldn't believe it. If the medics knew anything about bruising, they'd know these obviously looked like they'd be done a few hours earlier than I was claiming and if they knew more about cuts, they'd be able to tell I'd reopened these ones. This was risky. Roman and I looked at each other, the angst obvious on both our faces. We nodded at each other to say we were going to begin and Roman pulled his phone out, dialling Dean. He put it on loudspeaker.
"Hey Roman, where-" Dean began but Roman interrupted him.
"Dean, are the medics up there?" Roman rushed, straining his voice. "Quick, I need to know." There was a pause of a few seconds before Dean came back on the phone.
"Yeah, both of them. Why? What's happened?" Dean sounded scared and worried. I could only imagine what he would have been feeling; his stomach would have dropped as he heard Roman's rushed words, his palms would have begun to sweat and his heart would have started beating harder and faster as his mind ran wild with reasons why he was asking that. Had Roman hurt himself? Was it another colleague? Was it someone he was good friends with?
"It's Chloe. She was under the ring and it just crushed her. I need the medics." I wanted to clap Roman's perfect acting ability, he'd really sold it. Even I was starting to believe it!
"Hold on, I'll get them and we'll-"
"No, I'm already with her, I'll bring her to them. The medic's room is close to it anyway." Roman hung up instantly, not giving Dean a chance to reply. My smile grew and I just stared at him.
"That was insanely good." I managed to say, still in shock from that beautiful performance.
"You can thank me later, let's go." He said, grabbing my arm and pulling me out of the training room and towards the cafeteria. Once again, I rubbed my hands over the two cuts until the pain soared through my face and I sucked in a sharp breath. My eyes began watering and I had to keep my eye shut, but this was all part of making it believable. The medics would tend to it soon. We got to the cafeteria and Dean was at the doors, holding them open and gesturing for us to hurry up.
"Medics!" He shouted as we got into the cafeteria. I put my hand over my eye to cover the cuts and staggered through the groups of people with Roman by my side. I needed to make this believable on my end too. The medics rushed over to us with one other guy, who had dyed blonde hair that came down to his shoulders.
"What happened here?" One of the medics said as he put his arm around my shoulders and led us through the cafeteria, out a back door and towards the medic's room.
"She was fixing a ring in the training room and it just collapsed." Roman said, still lacing his voice with worry and anxiety.
"I can tell I've missed a lot today!" This blonde haired guy said to Dean and Roman as we all got to the medic's room. The medic put me in a chair that reminded me of a hairdresser's chair as they both rushed around the room, grabbing various pieces of equipment. Dean, Roman and this guy sat on a sofa that lined the back corner of the room and watched intently as the medic's started their work.
"I'm really sorry I interrupted your lunch break." I said as they began cleaning my face with antiseptic wipes. The sting was both horrible and satisfying, a feeling I'd felt many times before but by people Eli and I knew as friends, not professionals. If I'd gone to hospital every time I'd been injured in a fight, my record would be about three binders thick.
"It's alright, I suppose we can forgive you." One of the medics laughed, surprised by my apology.
"I was going to leave it but Roman said I needed to get them looked at." I said, adding more lies to the fake story that everyone was falling for. They finished up cleaning the blood and then injected an anaesthetic into my eyebrow and cheekbone.
"Well, I'm glad you listened to your friend because these are going to need stitching." My eyes widened, well as much as they could with everything going on. Stitches? Did Yusuf really hit me that hard?
"Stitches?" Dean and Roman voiced my feelings.
"Alright, I definitely need to be filled in on this." The blonde said, obviously wanting to know who I was for a start and why these two guys seemed worried about me as the medic's sorted me out. Wait, did I say worried? There's no way these two would be worried about me, would they? I've only been here a few hours.
"Dolph, this is Chloe. Chloe, this is Dolph." Dean said in the exact same way he'd introduced me to Paige.
"She's here on Community Service." Roman added quickly, making me feel uncomfortable. I hated how everyone introduced me as that girl on community service. Yes, I know that is exactly what I was but I just hated the way everyone said it. They said it in a way that made me sound like a drain on the system, one of those people that weren't needed in the world. I had my bad points, but I had a lot of good ones too. No one waited around to find those out though.
"Was she the one who broke in?" Dolph asked carefully, in case he was accusing me of something I didn't do.
"Yeah, that was me." I said before anyone else had the chance to answer. "I'm a nice person really."
"I heard you got into a fight with Nikki." Dolph said, contradicting my statement dramatically.
"I was there for that." Dean was quick to jump in. "Nikki started it and luckily for her Chloe held back from doing any serious damage."
