"shit," a mumbled voice comes from the other side of emiri's dorm door, causing her head to perk up and drop the pillow she was placing on her bed. the door knob jiggles a bit, followed by the sound of something falling to the floor. hesitant, the girl struts up to the peephole to see another girl on the other side. her eyebrows were squeezed together in slight frustration, bags in her arma and failing attempts at shoving the key into the keyhole.
assuming that must be her roommate, emiri opens the door swiftly to reveal the girl almost face to face, she'd bent down quickly to pick her key up after it dropped to the floor.
"oh!" she gasps when her upper body goes back up, "hi! i'm aeri, i'm rooming with you! sorry for the noise."
her energy was light and gentle and emiri found herself letting out a sigh of relief, causing aeri's smile to drop. "oh, girl, did i come at the wrong time? i can leave—"
the other quickly shakes her head and walks out of her thoughts. "no, sorry, i'm just... relieved, i guess." she says as she moves to the side and allows her now roommate to enter.
"really?" aeri questions, taking a good look at their room and drops her things to the floor with a huff. "actually, i get it. it's weird rooming with strangers, right? but i'm friendly, and i clean up after myself, so don't worry." her lips curve into a smile and emiri sends one back.
"right, exactly. were you living in korea already?" feeling comfortable in seconds, the girl sits on her bed while the roommate takes the chair at a desk.
"i was! and you're japanese, right? last name hayashi? i am too!" aeri beams, "i've been living here for a couple years, were you living here?"
she switches to japanese with ease, and emiri doesn't miss any of it. she realized she hadn't bothered checking who she was going to be living with, almost surprised at aeri knowing her surname. "no way, you are? that's actually such a relief, i'm not gonna lie. i didn't live here, though, i've visited many times because my moms korean, so we come here a lot."
"no way?! i'm half korean too. this might be fate?"
the two continue to converse in their respective languages, for so long that they'd lost track of time and you'd think they'd known each other forever. emiri found herself spilling all the tea about her life back home.
"wait, he broke up with you because... he wanted to experience college? are you serious?" aeri gawks in disbelief at the story emiri had been telling her.
now leaned back comfortably and her feet kicked up at the edge of her bed, emiri nods. "i don't know either, i just knew i wasn't gonna beg him to stay in my life. it's alright though, it worked out for me."
the other girl nods proudly, "exactly, and now you have me. you can hang with my friends and i, they'd love you. and if i ever catch him on campus, i'll fuck him up."
emiri laughs loudly at aeri's attempt to scary but feels her heart warm when she realized she must have really made a friend just her first day. she hoped her roommate really would allow her to hang out with her friend group, as it would save her the trouble of spending her first year friendless.
"thank you. by the way, what are you studying?" emiri asks.
aeri stood up to open a box of her belongings that she was going to start putting away. "literature. i adore writing, and poetry, journaling. everything and anything that has to do with words, count me in."
emiri could feel her passion just by hearing her talk about her major and it was fascinating. she hoped one day she and her roommate would be close enough for aeri to show her some of her writings, and the other knew it would be amazing.
whilst grabbing a bag of toiletries out of her suitcase and walking over to the one of few cabinets in their room, aeri continued. "oh! by the way, there's an on-campus day party this weekend. i go every year, even when i was still in highschool. there's gonna be drinks,
good, live music, it's just something to get the year started. you should let my friends and i take you!"
the lighter-haired girls ears perk up at the sound of a party, but more in a nervous way than anything positive. the idea of a party with girls she didn't know, her first week at college in a country she only spent the summers at her grandparents house with, sounded interesting. it sounded like a panic attack waiting to happen, but she was unsure how else she'd make the friends she was desperate to have.
aeri sensed the hesitation, noticing it was taking her roommate a while to respond. "i totally understand if you're not up to it, but i want you to know that my girls and i would never ever put you in any uncomfortable situation. i know we just met, but we all start somewhere, right?" a warm smile formed over her lips and emiri could instantly feel the sincerity and decided to speak from the moment.
she nods. "you know what? maybe i should kinda put myself out there. you and my uhm, my ex, are the only people i know here, so... i'm down!"
any friend she'd gotten to know during her summers in south korea were either at a different university, or in a different country. her ex's friends barely knew of her existence, likely wouldn't even recognize her but she didn't want to find out by running into them. just the mere thought of running into him made a pit form in her stomach. it felt inevitable but she was still going to do everything in her power to go unnoticed.
the night goes on comfortably, aeri leaves to get dinner with her friend group and emiri rejects the offer and chooses to stay home and update her friends about her day via facetime before going to sleep. the next day was her first day of class, luckily starting at noon which didn't require her to be up very early.
emiri's hands brush through her freshly straightened hair and she adjusts the bag strap over her shoulder before she steps into her music class. to her surprise, the seats were nearly empty, and she takes a second to count every head in the room and including herself, only counts thirteen people.
a boys head turns her way at the sound of the door opening and closing, and she accidentally and awkwardly makes eye contact for far too long with him before scrambling to a seat far, far away to avoid any other awkward encounter that was possibly waiting to happen.
the middle-aged looking man in the front of the room stands up from his chair and glances at the students among him, sighing a bit when he realized how little his classroom. "well, i suppose this is as full as these seats are gonna get. unfortunately, the cooler professor was too full for more students, so you're stuck with me."
he jokes, getting a scattered laugh from the everyone sitting down, even a light chuckle from emiri. he continues. "alright, i'm going to ask everyone to pull out their laptops, or ipads, whatever you have available. if you don't have one, the school can provide one for you, so make time to see your mentor. in the meantime, i'll give you a printed version of the syllabus. everyone else go to the school website and search for this class to see the syllabus."
the same boy the girl locked eyes with earlier raises his hand while the professors eyebrows perk up and walks over with a printed syllabus in hand. "i dropped my macbook in the tub. wanted to watch netflix while taking a bubble bath."
earning chuckles from the remaining students in the room, emiri knew he was clearly trying to help funny. the professor purses his lips. "i didn't need a backstory, young man. your name?"
"seunghan, sir. hong seunghan."
