Chapter 6

I had just gotten out of the shower and was in my room about to get ready for the wedding when there was a knock on my door. I opened it with some sweats and a t-shirt and smiled when I saw Andy.

"Hey, you come to sit with me while I get ready?" I asked.

"You can't go to the wedding," he said.

"If this is one of those romantic gestures where you stop me from getting on a plane then that's cute but I've got a half an hour to grab a snack and get ready," I said.

"It's not," he said. "I just don't want you to go."

"Andy, I RSVP'd a long time ago," I said. "It's my favorite cousin. My mom is picking me and Mikey up," I said. "Wh-why wouldn't I be allowed to go?"

"Because you're gonna go and there is gonna be drinking and late night dancing and weddings are notorious for hookups," he said.

"My family is there, I'm not gonna drink underage in front of them," I said. "And I'm not gonna hook up with anyone random, I love you, Andy, I only want to be with you."

"How am I supposed to believe that?" Andy asked. "You're cheating on me, aren't you?"

"No, I'm not," I denied. "I promise you I'm not."

Andy sat on my bed, looking down at his lap sadly.

"If you wanna leave me I guess I would understand," he said.

"No, Andy, I love you," I said, hurrying over to sit beside him.

He stood up, going towards the door.

"I guess if you don't really love me then you can go to the wedding," he said.

"No, no, I won't go," I said. "Please, don't leave me."

Andy turned to look at me and I pulled out my phone, calling my mom.

"Hi, mom," I said quietly.

"Hey, sweetie, are you almost ready?" She asked.

"I don't think I can go," I said. "I-I'm just feeling super sick and was throwing up. I must have gotten food poisoning or something. I don't feel good, I don't think I'm gonna be able to make it to the wedding."

"Okay, I'll send your congratulations, feel better," she said.

I hung up and sniffled as I looked down. Andy smiled and kissed my forehead.

"I just can't trust you to go there," he said. "I'm sure you understand, you can act a little whorish sometimes."

I bit my lip and looked down.

"Well, d-do you wanna hang out today then since I'm not doing anything anymore?" I asked.

"No," he said. "I'm gonna head out, I was gonna hang out with some of my frat brothers."

Andy left and I sniffled. I sat at my desk and sighed as I put away all my makeup. I hung the dress up and slipped on some shoes, grabbing my keys before deciding to go to the cafeteria. I grabbed some food, going to sit at a table to eat. I was almost done when someone came over to my table and I looked up to see Jamia.

"Hey, what time are you going to the wedding?" she asked. "You're gonna have to send me photos when you're finished getting ready."

"Oh, um, I'm not going anymore," I said.

"Oh, what happened?" She asked.

"It's kind of complicated," I mumbled.

"Alright, well, text me if you ever wanna hang out or something," she said.

Jamia gave me a smile before walking back to her table. Frank and I made eye contact and there was such an intense look on his face that I looked down. I grabbed my dishes and dumped the rest of the food into the trash before heading over to my studio.

"Hey, Gerard," Bert said.

I smiled and waved, sitting down at my desk. I browsed on my computer for a little while when Lindsey came over.

"Hey, don't you have that wedding?" She asked.

"Um, no, not anymore," I said, forcing a smile on my face.

"Well, at least you get to hang out with us now," she said.

I didn't do much of the talking while I was there, though. I ended up leaving around three in the afternoon, not even knowing where I wanted to go. There were people playing frisbee on the grass and maybe it was because I was distracted by them that I bumped into someone with a stack of boxes.I gasped, fumbling as I tried to catch some but was relieved when I realized they were at least empty when they went crashing.

Frank looked at me before kneeling down. I helped to stack up the boxes before he picked them up and started walking again without a word. I watched him leave, my stomach starting to twist upsettingly. Did I upset him? I know we kind of stopped talking on a bad note but what if he's angry at me? What will he do if he's angry at me?

I sent Jamia a quick text to ask if she wanted to grab a coffee with me. She replied rather quickly and we got some coffee from Einstein's before sitting down in a lounge that was mostly empty.

"What happened to the wedding?" Jamia asked. "It's okay if you don't want to talk about it but I just know that you were really excited to go."

"I-I don't know," I mumbled. "How do you know if someone is upset with you?"

"Is this about your boyfriend?" She asked.

Well, him or Frank.

"Yeah," I said.

"Well, how have you been able to tell if he was upset in the past?" She asked.

I bit my lip, my hand brushing over my shoulder where I knew there was a bruise under my shirt.

"Well, I guess I know that he's upset with me I just don't know why," I said. "Well, I do know why but I don't know what caused it exactly."

"What happened?" She asked.

I ran a hand through my black hair. "Well, he, uh, he was upset and didn't want me going to the wedding because he said I was going to cheat on him."

"And you've never cheated before?" She asked and I shook my head. "Well, I guess his worries are grounded more in theory than experience."

"He has cheated on me before," I said. "Maybe he's worried that I'm going to do it back?"

"He's cheated on you? That's not okay, Gee," she said. "Why are you still with him when you know he's cheated on you?"

"It was only a couple times," I said. "And I guess I did upset him so he's always said it was my fault."

"It's not your fault, Gee, that will never, ever be your fault," she said. "Even if you did upset him--which so far he never has grounded reasons for being upset with you--that isn't an excuse to betray your trust and cheat on you."

I bit my lip as I stared down at my drink.

"Are you still down for dying your hair?" I asked.

Jamia looked at me before smiling softly.

"Yeah, I am," she said.

We got some bleach and dye before heading back to my dorm. I opened the window to help air out the dorm before I started applying it to her hair first. While it was setting, I sat in front of my desk mirror to apply the bleach to my own head. The door opened and I smiled when Ray walked in, scrunching up his nose as he looked around.

"Oh, geez that smell is strong," he said.

"Want me to bleach your hair as well?" I asked.

"I'm good," he said. "Just coming to grab one of my textbooks."

He grabbed it and left as I finished.

"How long does this stay in?" She asked.

"I actually timed it pretty well so we will be able to wash it out at the same time," I said. "Since you didn't do your roots, yours takes longer so I did you first."

"Smart," she said as we sat on my bed.

"So, h-how's Frank doing?" I asked.

"Oh, he's doing good," she said.

"I-is he...is he mad at me because I yelled at him the last time we talked?" I asked.

"Mad? No, of course not," she denied. "Why do you think that?"

"I don't know, he just doesn't talk to me ever now," I said. "Before he usually always made at least a point to be polite."

"He isn't upset," she said. "You asked Frank to leave you alone and he is simply respecting your wishes, even if he doesn't like it. He just wants to make sure you're okay and comfortable. Trust me, he has been dying to be able to talk to you again."

"Oh," I mumbled with a blush as I looked down.

"And no matter how much he wants to be able to talk to you and hang out with you, if you asked him to stay away then he will stay away," she said. "Frank is very big on consent--as everyone should be. He will take whatever you want with respect."

"Frank sounds like a really good person," I said.

"He really is, Gee," she said.

I bit my lip as I looked over at the photo of me and Andy on my desk. Is Andy just as good of a person as Frank? Well, I already know that Andy doesn't really always take no for an answer. He doesn't care so much about consent.

"Wash time," I said.

We went into the handicapped single room toilet with two towels. I helped her wash her bleach out before she helped me. I grabbed the colored dye and put it on my head, letting it sit before the time was done and I washed it out. We looked into the mirror when we were done and I smiled. The ends of her hair was bleached and now a pretty blonde color. My hair was black, the roots of it dyed a teal blue.

"You look amazing, Gee," She said. "Thank you so much, I love this. What do I owe you?"

"Owe me?" I asked. "Nothing, you're my friend."

"People always pay hairdressers hundreds of dollars for bleaching," she said. "Come on, let me at least be able to do something in return."

"Well, I guess I'll keep this in mind to see when I can hold it over your head to get you to do something," I said.

Jamia smiled, giving me a hug before we sat down to watch a movie together.
