Coming Out {29}
“You’re dead,” Collin snarled viciously, advancing at me. “You’re fucking dead Travis!”
Alex stepped in front of me protectively. “Collin, stop it!” he commanded, struggling to be heard over the music.
Collin stopped in front of Alex, shaking with fury. “Move Alex,” he hissed. “Move so I can kill this stupid fucking faggot.”
“Collin, stop it! I’m gay! Deal with it!” Alex said, his voice slightly desperate. “If you can’t accept it and let me be with who I want and kiss who I want, then I’m sorry, but I guess I’ll have to…to cut you out of my life.”
Collin stopped, hurt taking over his furious expression. “Alex,” he said in shock. “I…Don’t say that. Please don’t say that.”
“I mean it Collin. This is something you’re going to have to learn to deal with. Unless you don’t care about me,” Alex said.
“Alexander!” Collin cried, frowning deeply. He seemed unable to say anything else.
“Will you leave us alone?” Alex asked, taking my hand in his.
Collin bit his lip and nodded reluctantly. “I’ll stop. I promise. Just…don’t cut me out of your life Alex. Please,” he said, dropping his gaze to his feet. “I’m sorry.”
Alex gave him a weak smile. “Go enjoy the rest of the dance with Bri, Collin. I’m 14. I can handle my own relationships,” he said.
Collin stared at him, hurt still in his eyes. He turned and disappeared into the crowd of dancing teenagers.
“I feel horrible,” Alex said, the smile dropping off his face, guilt taking over his features. “I think I really just hurt his feelings. I know I needed to do that, but I feel so bad. I hate hurting Collin.”
I wrapped my arms around him and gave him a comforting smile. “Hey, it’ll be okay. You guys will work it out. Collin will understand,” I promised.
Alex turned and offered me a small smile. He pressed his lips to mine and I kissed him back, loving the feeling and so glad I got to do this now.
“There it is!”
We pulled apart and glanced at Gage. I narrowed my eyes at him, keeping my arms around Alex. Gage gave me a confused look.
“What’s the glare for?” he asked.
“You did that on purpose!” I said.
“Did what on purpose?” he asked, truly sounding confused.
“You didn’t actually distract Collin!” I whined.
The confusion left his face and he shook his head, letting out an annoyed sigh. He gestured to Gav. “I told him you would have 30 seconds. It took him over a minute to freaking find you. By the time he actually found you and told you, I’d already lost Collin’s attention.”
Gav smiled innocently at us. “Hehe. Whoops.”
I face-palmed myself and shook my head. “You’re an idiot,” I groaned.
“But it all worked out for the best, so whatever,” Gage said with a shrug.
“Now we can finally just enjoy the rest of the dance!” Gav said happily, wrapping an arm around Rose’s waist.
I wasn’t surprised that the action made my heart ache a little. I was guilty, sure, but not surprised. I knew I wasn’t over him. I was starting to move on, but my feelings weren’t.
Alex took my hand and squeezed it, offering me a little smile. His eyes held a knowing look, but I could tell he wasn’t mad or jealous.
“Tonight is going to be a good night,” Gage said, smirking and leaning against Lyle.
Lyle wrapped an arm around Gage and returned to smirk. “Yes it is,” he said with a flirty wink.
“Hey, hey, hey. Save it for way later. We’re going to my house after the ball. I don’t want you guys screwing in my basement,” I said, rolling my eyes at them.
“I’m surprised you’re not screwing Alex right now. I mean, I would. Look at how sexy he looks,” Gage said, eyeing Alex.
Alex blushed slightly and I shook my head at Gage. “Eye rape your own date!” I whined. “Alex is mine!”
“Hey, you’re the one who was going to get him after sex,” Gage said, snickering.
“Fuck you. It’s not my fault I can’t say six!” I said miserably.
“Trav, we all know you want to have sex. So either find an empty room with Alex, or come home with me tonight,” Gage said. Aw man. I could tell by his expression that he wasn’t kidding. Damn horny midget.
“No way. You’re coming home with me tonight,” Lyle said.
“Maybe,” Gage said with a shrug. “Only if I can’t get Trav.”
“Gage, you are a horrible person,” Gav said, laughing.
“Can we just pretend we’re not related?” Rose asked with a hopeless sigh.
Gage rolled his eyes. “We’ll be right back. I have to talk to Trav about something. Just wait here,” he said.
He grabbed my arm and dragged me away from Alex. He led me to a room that had no one in it and shut the door, locking it.
He turned to me and raised an eyebrow. “Well? How was it? How was your first kiss with the ever sexy Alex Radke?” he asked.
I smiled. “It was amazing,” I said, aware that I sounded like a complete girl.
“So, are you going to officially ask him to date you?” he asked.
I thought about it for a minute before nodding. “Yes,” I said, glad to hear the confidence in my own voice. “Yes, I am. Tonight.”
“Looks like you’re moving on from Gav,” he said.
I sighed and shook my head sadly. “No. I still have feelings for him. I still…love…him. But I’m going to be with Alex. I’ll get over Gav. I’ll be loyal to Alex, and Alex only,” I said fiercely.
“Before you do that, I have to ask you something,” Gage said.
“What?” I asked curiously. What could Gage possibly have to ask me? Did he still want to be Alex? Was that it?
Gage stepped up to me and cupped my face in his hands. He pressed his lips to mine, kissing me deeply.
He pulled away and cocked his head to the side. “Still going to pick Alex?” he asked.
I nodded. “Yea. I’m sorry Gage, but you and I wouldn’t work out as a couple,” I said quietly. I guess I should’ve seen that coming.
Gage shrugged. “Aw well. Didn’t hurt to try. No offense Trav, but I’ll be over it within the next 10 minutes.”
That made me smile a little. “I know Gage. I know you,” I said, laughing. “And I guess that’s part of the reason why we wouldn’t work out as a couple. We’re just meant to be friends.”
“I know,” Gage said with a nod. “But, like I said, it didn’t hurt to try.”
He opened the door and we left together. We made our way back to the dance floor and over to our friends.
Alex gave me a questioning look, but I just shook my head at him. He didn’t need to know about that.
Just A Little Bit by Kids of 88 began to play, and I started dancing around with Alex and my friends. I made sure not to look at Gav and Rose as they danced around together. I didn’t want to ruin the good mood I had slipped into.
After a while of dancing like idiots, we all decided to grab some food and drinks and relax for a little. We loaded up plates and grabbed water bottles before heading back over to our table and sitting down.
“This dance is way more fun than I thought it would be!” Gav said, still trying to catch his breath from the dancing.
“Hell yea,” I said with a smile, taking a large gulp of my water.
I looked over at Alex. “Are you having fun?” I asked.
Alex smile and nodded happily. “Yea!” he said. “I’m having a lot of fun Trav!”
I moved to have some of the spaghetti on my plate, but froze as my eyes landed on Gav. My heart sank at the sight in front of me.
Gav was kissing Rose, his hands on her waist and her arms wrapped around his neck. He pulled away from her, looking happier than I had ever seen him in my entire life. His eyes said that the only person in the room right now was Rose.
“Trav!”
Alex was shaking my arm. I snapped out of my daze and looked over at him in confusion. He pointed at my shirt.
“You got sauce on your tuxedo,” he said.
I looked down at the stain and nodded. I looked up to set my fork down and saw that Gage was shooting my a knowing look.
“I’ll be right back,” I mumbled, standing up and hurrying away from the table.
I went into the bathroom and turned on the hot water. I grabbed a paper towel and soaked it in the water before beginning to wipe at my tuxedo.
The door to the bathroom opened and then Gav appeared. I wanted to scream at him to just get out and leave me alone. I wasn’t in the mood to deal with him.
“Are you okay Trav?” he asked, concern on his face. “You were really pale. Do you feel sick or something?”
Dammit. Now he was going all concerned best friend mode on me.
“Yea,” I said, trying and failing to smile. “I’m fine Gav.”
“What’s wrong? What’s really wrong Trav?” he asked.
I felt the paper towel slip from my hand. I clenched my fists tightly, wishing I could lie but knowing that the truth was about to explode out of me.
“I love you Gavin!” I cried. “That’s what’s wrong! I’ve been in love with you for so long and you’re too damn stupid to see it! My feelings for you make me crazy guilty over being with Alex and every time I see you happy with Rose I just want to scream! I’m jealous that she makes you happy and I don’t! I’m hate that I’m gay and you’re straight! I hate being in love with you!”
I was breathing heavily by the end of that. I hung my head. “I’m sorry,” I whispered. “I didn’t mean to yell at you like that.”
Gav came over and gripped my chin, gently tilting my head so that I was looking him in the eyes. He gave me a weak smile.
“Trav, we wouldn’t work out as a couple anyways. We’re too close,” he said.
I bit my lip. “I’m sorry,” I repeated, unsure of what else to say anymore.
“Trav…I’ll prove it to you,” Gav said.
Before I could ask him what he meant, his lips met mine.
I was shocked for a minute before closing my eyes and kissing him back. I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling his body closer to mine as our lips worked together.
Gav pulled away from me, blushing slightly. “Well, that was a bit awkward. No offense. But…do you see what I mean now?”
“It felt like kissing my own brother,” I said reluctantly.
I sighed and hugged Gav. He hugged me back tightly. We pulled away and he grinned at me, sticking his tongue out.
“Haha! Now I can rub it in Gage’s face that I got to kiss you!” he said smugly.
“Gage and I made out on his bed,” I said.
“Oh. Well…whatever!” Gav huffed, crossing his arms and pouting.
“Come on,” I said, laughing. “Let’s go back to the other. They don’t have to know about this. Especially Rose and Alex.”
Gav nodded in agreement and we left the bathroom. We went back over to our table and I sat down next to Alex.
I felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders tonight. Gage would get over me, Collin would leave us alone, I had been honest with Gav, and now I knew Gav and I wouldn’t have worked out. I could finally just move on with Alex and be happy.
I grabbed Alex’s hand and kissed his cheek. “Alex, will you be my boyfriend?” I asked, too caught up in the moment to even think before I spoke.
Alex blushed and nodded. “I would love to Trav,” he said, silent but happy.
We shared another kiss. Alex rested his head on my shoulder and I wrapped my arm around him, happier than I had been in a while.
“There’s something about love that breaks your heart, whoa oh, oh, oh, it sets you free!” the music sang.
“There’s about an hour left of the dance. Should we get back on the dance floor?” Gage asked.
We all shrugged and nodded, moving out onto the dance floor together. I looked around and smiled, nudging Alex and nodding.
Alex looked over as well and smiled in relief. Collin was a little ways away, dancing with Bri, Josh, and Josh’s date. He had a smile on his face, and though he still looked slightly troubled, he also looked like he was having a good time.
“I’m glad he’s having fun,” Alex said, wrapping his arms around my neck.
“Me too,” I said. Collin was a complete asshole, but he still meant the world to Alex. If he was upset, Alex would be upset. And I didn’t want that.
When the senior ball finally ended, we all left. My friends followed me out to my car and we got in, turning on some music as I began to drive towards my house.
“That was pretty fun,” Gage said with a shrug.
“It was really fun,” I said, smiling widely. It had been a great night.
“Trav, you better have some alcohol stored in your basement for us. I am not ending this night sober,” Gage said.
I rolled my eyes. “Yes, Gage. I snuck some alcohol into the basement for us,” I assured him.
“Oh shit,” Gage said with a smirk, wrapping an arm around Lyle.
“SHAKE THAT ASS, MOVE IT LIKE A GYPSY, STOP, WHOA, BACK IT UP, NOW LET ME SEE YOUR HIPS SWING!” Gav cried, bouncing up and down next to Rose.
We rolled our eyes at him and fell into random talk about the senior ball until I pulled into my driveway. We got out of the car and went into my house, where we were instantly attacked by mom and her camera.
“Now, all of you stand right there!” she commanded, setting us up and beginning to snap a billion pictures of us.
“Aw, you all look so amazing! Trav, are you and Alex dating? You are, aren’t you! Oh, then you two need an individual picture. Well, you can just move your asses over here!”
Without letting us talk, she grabbed us and took pictures of us. When my mom had finally used up the memory on camera she nodded in satisfaction.
“Good! Now can you go in the basement,” she said, snatching the keys from me. “But turn your cell phones off. I know there’s alcohol hidden down there somewhere, and I don’t want you drunk texting.”
“Mom,” I groaned before leading my friends down to my basement.
We sat down on the couches and I turned on Whiskey In Hell by Anarbor. I grabbed the alcohol I had stashed and tossed everyone a beer.
“I have all different kinds of drinks for tonight,” I said before Gage could start complaining.
I sat next to Alex and wrapped an arm around him as we began to drink. I smiled at everyone, feeling joyful with my life for the first time in a while.
“This is great,” I said honestly.
“Yea, it is,” Gav agreed with a nod and a smile.
“Tonight was certainly an interesting night,” Gage said, shaking his head and smirking at me. The look in his eyes said he knew I had kissed Gav. God only knows how Gage knew that, but he did.
I kissed Alex, beyond grateful to be dating him. Honestly, I owed this all to Gage. He was the one who had prompted me to come out and to ask Alex to the senior ball with me.
We began to drink and talk, listening to music and laughing together. Rose came over to me and gave me a small smile.
“I’m glad you’re happy Trav. I’m happy with Gav. I’m glad you convinced me to go to the senior ball with him,” she said so that only I could hear her.
“You guys go well together,” I said honestly. “And you make Gav so happy.”
She blushed and hugged me tightly, kissing my cheek. “You are a wonderful person Travis Blake,” she said before moving back over to Gav.
So, I had realized I wouldn’t work out with Gav, and Rose had realized she would. Tonight had certainly been an interesting night.
I looked around and frowned. “Where did Gage and Lyle go?” I asked.
“The bathroom,” Gav said, rolling his eyes and laughing.
“Aw man. They’re cleaning it when they’re done,” I grumbled.
Alex laughed and I smiled at him. He really did make me happy. I wasn’t in love with him but, as I had learned tonight, feelings changed. Who knows? I could easily fall in love with him.
Knowing how we both were, Alex and I would take our relationship nice and slow. I was completely okay with that. I wasn’t ready to dive right into a strong, sexual relationship.
Gage and Lyle returned a little while later. I raised an eyebrow at Gage and he smirked, winking at me.
“Trav, you could learn a thing or two on how to use your lips from that boy,” he said smugly before dropping into a chair across from the couch Alex and I were on.
Lyle went and sat next to Gage. I rolled my eyes and shook my head in amusement. They were just hooking up for the night. They wouldn’t be in a relationship. I knew Gage too well for that.
“I’m pretty surprised Gage. I thought getting on his knees would put Lyle at the same height as you,” I said, smirking.
Lyle grabbed Gage before he could launch at me and kill me. “Fuck you!” he snapped.
“You’re so mean Trav,” Alex said, laughing.
“Hey! Short jokes against Gage are my job!” Gav whined, flicking me in the nose.
“Well you didn’t take the opportunity so I did!” I said, smacking his hand away and pouting at him.
“Are you guys seriously arguing over who gets to make fun of my height?” Gage asked, glaring at us with a look that said he would strangle us to death if Lyle let go of him.
“Yep!” Gav and I said, nodding together.
“Gage, you’re 17 years old and exactly five feet tall. You’re short. Accept it and move on,” Rose said, rolling her eyes at her cousin.
“Watch me hit a growth spurt and shoot up past you mother fuckers,” Gage grumbled, crossing his arms and giving up his struggles against Lyle.
We stayed up and drank a little longer before all getting tired and deciding to go to bed. I grabbed some blankets and pillows and tossed them on the couches and chairs in my basement.
“Alright! Everybody fall asleep where they want,” I said, too lazy to get out the air mattress. If everyone was uncomfortable, too bad. I was tired, and I wanted to just lie down and pass out already.
I laid down and pulled Alex with me. He grabbed a blanket and pulled it over us, snuggling against me. I wrapped my arms around him a pecked his lips.
“This has been a good day,” I announced.
“Indeed it has. Now shut up and go to sleep,” Gage grumbled.
“Goodnight everybody!” Gav said, curled up on the opposite couch with Rose.
“If you fuck my cousin, I’ll fuck your face,” Gage said. “Oops. I meant fuck up your face.”
“Sure you did Gagey boy,” Gav said with a wink. “Sure you did.”
I chuckled and squeezed my eyes shut. I was feeling amazing right now. Everything had fallen into place tonight, and I was finally peaceful. I hugged Alex tighter and allowed myself to drift off to sleep.
