Coming Out {11}

“Hey Rose…can I talk to you?” I asked, going up to her at her locker.

She smiled at me and nodded, slight curiosity in her eyes. “Of course you can Trav. What’s up?” she asked, shutting her locker.

I motioned her into an empty classroom and shut the door. I ran a hand through my hair and sighed.

“Um…do you have a date to senior ball?” I asked, silently praying that she would say yes.

She shook her head, a slight blush creeping onto her cheeks. It made my mind flash to Alex, but I shook that out of my head. Now was not the time to be thinking about Alex.

“Well…I know someone who really, really wants to go with you,” I said, smiling weakly despite my disappointment that she was free.

                “Who?” she asked eagerly.

                “Gavin Drake,” I said.

Her face fell and she raised an eyebrow at me, looking upset. “That’s not funny Travis. Gav’s a pervert. Did he put you up to this? I hate being his joke sometimes. He takes it too far, like right now.”

I shook my head wildly. “Rose, he really likes you. He knows he takes it too far with you and he knows you don’t take him seriously anymore, which is why he asked me to talk to you. He really likes you and wants to go to the ball with you. Look, I know he can be oblivious, perverted, and an asshole at times, but he really is a great guy. If you went with him, I know you wouldn’t regret it. He would treat you right. He wouldn’t be the oblivious, perverted asshole. He would be Gavin Drake, a caring, funny, and romantic guy,” I said seriously.

Rose sighed and stood up. “You really care about Gav, huh? I guess I’ll give it some thought. But he needs to man up and ask me himself, and prove that he won’t be the way he normally is.”

She came over to me and hugged me tightly. “You’re a really good guy Trav.”

I hugged her back before releasing her. She sighed again and twirled a piece of hair around her finger before heading over to the door.

“Gav is a good guy and all but…I was hoping someone else would have asked me. Still, he’s got a chance thanks to you,” she said before leaving the room.

I stared after her in confusion. Huh, I wonder who she had been hoping to get asked out by. I hadn’t been aware Rose even liked anyone like that.

I left the classroom and wandered around until I found Gage and Gav standing in the hallway waiting for me. We walked to my bus and sat down together.

“So?” Gav asked eagerly, basically bouncing in the seat.

“You’ve got a chance. But you have to prove yourself,” I said.

Gav let out a triumphant yell and tackled me against the seat in a hug, earning a few stares. He ignored them and gave me a huge grin.

“Travis Blake, I fucking love you!” he cried happily.

I couldn’t help but smile softly. He seemed so happy. I just wanted to see my best friend happy. He deserved it.

We got off the bus at my house and went to my living room, dropping onto the couches. Gav jumped up after a few minutes of us watching TV.

“I have to pee!” he announced before skipping off down the hall to my bathroom.

Gage turned to face me and raised an eyebrow. “Rose told me. I’m not mad. As long as Gav keeps it in his pants for once.”

“You’re one to talk,” I said, rolling my eyes.

“Shut up. Anyways, get over him Trav. It’s never going to happen. Gav is straight, and that’s that. If you come out, you could get any gay guy in our school. You’re hot, funny, and caring. Now who wouldn’t want a guy like that?” He crossed his arms.

“Well…how do I come out?” I asked awkwardly.

“Start by telling your parents,” Gage said with a shrug. “Then tell Gav and Rose. You don’t need to announce it to the whole school. It’ll get around on its own once you tell your friends. It’s just the way high school works.”

I nodded nervously, wondering how my parents would react once they found out I was gay. Would they be mad? Disappointed? Ashamed?

“Trav, stop thinking about it. I know your parents. They’re going to be fine with you being gay. They’ll probably be super casual about it. Hell, they probably already know. The way you dress, it should be pretty obvious,” Gage said.

“Gee thanks Gage!” I cried, rolling my eyes.

Gage shrugged and motioned to himself. “Hey, we know how to look sexy. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. Also, your voice. It just screams gay.”

“Gage, you can’t tell sexuality based on someone’s voice. You have a deep voice,” I pointed out. It was weird that Gage had such a smooth, deep voice. He was so short that most people expected him to have a high pitched voice.

“I know. But it’s classic, cliché, and stereotypical,” Gage said, grinning a little. “So it just amuses me a bit. No offense Trav.”

“Offense taken,” I grumbled as Gav came racing out of the bathroom.

He launched himself onto the couch, tipping it back a little. It thumped back onto the ground and Gav grinned at me.

“Hi Trav. I’m in a great mood,” he announced joyfully.

“Oh I can tell,” I said, shoving him away from me.

“So…how about that Alex Radke?” Gage asked after a few moments of silence.

“Gage, you’re never getting with him. Get over it,” I said, patting his head sympathetically.

Gage swatted my hand away and pouted. “Why can’t gay guys just accept their sexuality, fuck me, and move on with their lives? Seriously, it’s annoying.”

I nearly face palmed myself. Gage could be such an asshole sometimes. Sigh. Great, I had an oblivious, hyperactive moron as one best friend, and the other was a giant asshole who wanted to sleep with me.

                Oh I loved my life.

“Hey Gav…If you fuck my cousin, I’m going to kill you. Just throwing that out in the open,” Gage said casually, his eyes on the TV screen.

Gav winced a little. “Hey, I’ll be a good boy. I’m always a good boy!” he whined.

“Always a good boy my ass,” Gage grumbled. “Just don’t take it too far with Rose if you want to live. I’m not the kind of person you want to piss off. You should know that by now. We’ve all been best friends for years.”

“Yea, you’re like a baby Hulk when you get angry!” Gav gushed, pinching Gage’s cheek.

Gage snarled at him, snapping his teeth. “Do that again and I’ll bite your fucking fingers off,” he growled dangerously.

“Aw Gage! You have so much rage in such a little body. You’re adorable!” Gav cried happily, bouncing up and down on the couch.

“Travis,” Gage snapped, glaring at me.

I sighed and slapped a hand over Gav’s mouth. “Gav, stop it before you get yourself killed. I don’t want your blood to stain my couch.”

“Aw Trav! Why are you so mean to me?!” Gav whined, pulling my hand away from his mouth.

“I’m not Gav! I love you!” I said, giving him puppy dog eyes.

“AW! BABY COME BACK! YOU CAN BLAME IT ALL…ON…MEEEEEE!” Gav sang, wrapping his arms around me and hugging me tightly.

“Oh gag me,” Gage said, rolling his eyes.

“Yea, yea! Gag is Gage minus the e!” Gav cried in excitement, releasing me.

Gage stared at him before shaking his head. “I swear your parents dropped you on your head way too many times Gav. You guys are so weird I can’t even handle it sometimes.”

“You’re just jealous of our passionate love affairs,” Gav scoffed, slinging an arm around my shoulders.

“Oh please. If you two were having passionate love affairs, we all know I would’ve joined in on the action by now. I’m the pro here, Gav’s got experience, and Trav needs to be taught,” Gage said.

I blushed lightly. “Shut up Gage. Sorry I don’t go throwing myself at anything that breathes,” I whined.

“Hey! I have standards you know. They have to breathe AND be male,” Gage said matter-of-factly.

“Oh shit! Gage is getting classy!” Gav cried.

“Well, if you consider fucking in the backroom of the library classy, than yea. Gage is the classiest person I know,” I said, smirking.

“You, sir, are an asshole. And my mother dearest is here to bring me home and feed me so I can grow into a big, strong, healthy boy,” Gage said, jumping up and shoving his cell phone back into his pocket.

“You can grow?” Gav asked, truly shocked. “I thought you were stuck at that height forever!”

“I swear to god if you say one more word about my height I’m going to rip your legs off and shove them up your nose until they bleed out of your eye sockets!” Gage snapped angrily.

Gav whimpered and ducked behind me fearfully. I pat his head as if he were a dog before shifting off of the couch and following Gage to the front door.

“Bye Gage. See you tomorrow. And…I plan to come out tomorrow. Starting with my parents tonight, and then Gav,” I said quietly.

Gage grinned and craned his neck up so that he could gently press his lips to mine. He pulled away, his eyes confident.

“Good. And remember Trav…that offer is always open,” he said with a wink before sliding out of the front door.

I watched him make his way down the driveway into his mom’s car. I waved as they pulled out and took off down the road before shutting the door.

I made my way back upstairs and sat down next to Gav. He slung an arm back around my shoulders and I rested my head on his shoulder as we watched TV together.

I enjoyed our position and closeness as we continued to watch TV. I knew that by this time tomorrow, we may not be so close anymore. But it didn’t matter now. Because I was coming out tomorrow no matter what the consequences were.
