43. August

As Sophia expected, Jamie hadn't been pleased with her outing. But, other than a firm reminder of what Sophia should and should not be doing, the agent left her alone, not indicating that the upcoming move was particularly forthcoming.

So to keep things as normal as possible, Sophia went to work. She spotted more than one coworker nursing a hangover, although most of the emergency medical team seemed to have been responsible and came into work clear-headed.

"And how is she?" Sophia came up behind Blake standing in line for coffee and couldn't help but needle him.

Blake turned around, already in the process of an eye roll, but he was too transparent to hide his delight. "We have a date," he said pointedly. "Next Tuesday."

Sophia grinned. "If you get married, I expect to be thanked."

"Don't get ahead of yourself there, matchmaker."

Still chuckling as she plopped down at her desk, Sophia brought up her next episode of Money Heist and started typing away.

The work hadn't gotten any less dull over the months Sophia had been employed in admin, but she had to admit, there was a benefit to not working twelve straight hours of pure stress. Not that she wouldn't go back to the emergency room in a heartbeat if she had the chance, but given the stress she was already under given her current situation, work did provide a nice break from that.

"Hey, Sadie, look at this!"

Sophia took out her earbud and paused her show as Carmen rolled over to her, brandishing a phone in her direction. "What is it?"

"You remember how yesterday some of the execs were filming some promotional thing?"

Sophia nodded.

"Look!"

Sophia took the phone from her and pressed play. The men and women in suits were talking about some new program the hospital had, but that wasn't what caught Sophia's attention. The entire crew headed to the retirement party had been caught passing in the background, and Sophia paused the video as she saw her own face, grinning at something Blake had just said, caught clearly in the frame.

"You're on T.V.!"

Sophia jerked her stare up at Carmen at the words. "T.V.?" she repeated. "Carmen, where was this broadcast?"

"Everywhere. Apparently, the program is a national leader in the field. It was for NBC's national nightly news."

National news. Sophia forced a smile as her throat closed up. "Thanks, Carmen, that's super cool."

"You're famous!"

Still grinning, Carmen returned to her desk, leaving Sophia to beat back the panic that had consumed her in an instant. She logged out of her computer, gathered her things, and approached her supervisor.

"Hey, Ronnie?" Sophia said, trying to keep her voice level.

Ronnie's brow furrowed in concern the moment she looked up. "Sadie, are you okay?"

"Um, yeah, I'm fine," Sophia said. "I'm just feeling a little nauseous. Is it okay if I go home early today?"

"Of course," Ronnie said. "Try to get some rest."

"Thanks, Ronnie."

The moment Sophia left the office, she sped her way through the hospital, calling Jamie as she walked. The agent didn't answer.

"Fuck," Sophia whispered, a little too loud, to herself, startling a passing resident.

She called again, and again, and even tried Travers. But no luck.

"Okay, just get home, Sophia," she said to herself as she passed through the hospital doors. "Everything will be fine, then."

She wasn't even all that concerned about Graham having seen the footage. He was on the run, would he really be watching NBC Nightly News? And besides, even if he did, it would take him some time to New York City. She was safe from him, for now.

She was more concerned about someone back in California having seen it. If anyone had, she could almost guarantee that it would eventually get back to Dean. And despite the months apart, based on how they left things and her total radio silence over the past few months, Sophia was almost certain that he wouldn't hesitate to get on a plane and come to New York to try and find her.

He would be putting himself right into Graham's crosshairs. And Sophia refused to let that happen.

She had to leave. The Feds had to move her. Today. That was the only way to ensure everyone was safe. She would take the brand-new identity; she would take having to start over and face the crushing loneliness again. But she refused to put Dean in danger.

She wove in and out of the crowded New York streets, heading to the subway station. Every face was coming to get her; every face was Dean coming to save her. She didn't know which one would be worse.

Finally, she jogged down the stairs of the 1 station, swiping her Metrocard and breathing a sigh of relief as she reached the platform. There had been numerous stabbings on subway platforms throughout the city since the time Sophia had moved, but none of them had been targeted. All were random. And right now, Sophia preferred random. It beat having someone purposefully coming after her.

So while subway stations weren't exactly the safest places, Sophia felt more relaxed than she did on the streets. It would be quite a sight for Graham to kidnap her and then have to drag her up the stairs into broad daylight.

She was too late in realizing her mistake. Usually, she took the subway during busy commute times, but now, in the middle of the day, the platform was empty. She stood at the very end, where she would be able to easily exit the station when she got off, but where she was completely out of sight of MTA agents or any police officers who might be patrolling. She was completely alone, with no witnesses.

Sophia felt the emptiness through the hairs standing up on the back of her neck, and her gut churned, telling her to get herself out.

Sophia turned in place, ready to put herself in the middle of the platform and hopefully a well-packed subway card.

The station wasn't as empty as she had assumed.
