Chapter 76 - Rampaging Love
So peaceful. The yellow grass. The blue sky. The birds that flew overhead. Estarossa sat and stared at it all and yet, for some reason, there was unrest in his heart.
'What are you doing out here all alone?' said a kind voice and Estarossa turned the see the face of one of his favourite people in the world.
'Hey, Elizabeth.'
Her smile was soft as she sat beside him. 'Did you have another fight with your big brother?'
Estarossa turned his face away from her. 'Not this time. It's the others.' He focussed hard on the horizon to force back the tears in his eyes and the lump in his throat. 'They said I'm nothing but a big coward who couldn't even kill a bug.'
'Is that what's bothering you?' Elizabeth nudged his shoulder with hers.
'No.' Estarossa shifted slightly but not away. 'It's just that ... I feel like I'm bringing shame to my brother.'
Elizabeth made a strange sound almost like a dog bark. Estarossa stared at her, but Elizabeth was turning away, her smile now wider and more excited. Before he could ask what was happening, a small hairy something leapt into Elizabeth's arms and Estarossa saw that it was, in fact, a dog.
The dog stared at Elizabeth with adoring eyes. Its fur was white except for its brown ears. Estarossa watched with an ugly feeling squeezing his heart as Elizabeth returned the dog's adoring look with her own.
'What's the deal with him?'
Elizabeth laughed as the dog licked her cheek. 'When I found him, he was hurt and couldn't move.' After what felt like an eternity, Elizabeth turned her attention back to Estarossa. 'Forget them. You just stay the way you are.'
Estarossa pressed his lips tight together, folded his arms and looked away from Elizabeth. 'I have to become strong. If this peace ends ... if another war begins ...' He turned back to face her. 'You are proof, Elizabeth. Of Goddess and Demon powers coexisting. If you would just tell me how ...'
But Estarossa let his voice trail off. There was no way she'd tell him. The whole time he'd known Elizabeth, she had been shrouded in mystery. Speaking often of her parents but never saying who they were. Possessing both Demon and Goddess powers. It annoyed him but Estarossa liked Elizabeth too much to pry too hard. He didn't want to lose her.
Estarossa looked at the corpse of the Goddess. He was panting hard, every breath stinging the back of his throat. But he was the one still standing. And that made his heart warm.
'Nice work,' said Meliodas, a dark smile evident in his voice. 'Just what I'd expect of my kid brother.'
'So do you think that I'll ever get to be like you one day?' Estarossa tried to hide the desperation in his voice.
'I absolutely guarantee it.'
So Estarossa spent his years training for a war that seemed increasingly unlikely to happen. No matter what his brother insisted. But Estarossa had long since learned to not ask questions of whys and what ifs. He just killed Goddess after Goddess until they all blurred together in his mind. And he never spoke of it to Elizabeth.
She was his safe space. His proof that the peace treaty was still intact despite his brother's actions.
And so Estarossa went to Elizabeth every time he couldn't wash the blood from his hands or couldn't stop the screams from echoing. He went to her with injuries and bitterness and she never turned him away.
Until that day.
When he learned the truth.
And everything changed.
With those words from Elizabeth's mouth.
And now Estarossa looked down at Elizabeth with his head pounding with power and darkness and memories that didn't always make sense. He had figured it out after all this time. In order to become Meliodas, he needed someone to make his own. Love. Whatever it was called. Because Meliodas had [Y/n]. So that meant he needed Elizabeth.
He turned his chin up smugly. 'Well, what do you know? That wish came true after all.'
—
The cocoon was enormous and made the back of Zeldris's neck prickle. But he didn't look away. It was like he could see Meliodas somehow, feel what he was feeling as the power in the air swelled and thickened and thrummed like a too fast heartbeat.
'How's Meliodas coming along?' asked Cusack from somewhere to the right.
'I have to admit, I'm impressed actually.' Zeldris narrowed his eyes ever so slightly. 'Thought it's taking him some time, he's showing no signs of rejection. He's slowly absorbing the Commandments.'
—
You stared blankly at Estarossa and had to fight back the mad urge to laugh. What did he just say? He wanted to be Meliodas? He was Meliodas? What did that mean? He was nothing like Meliodas. You missed Meliodas so much that it felt like half of your insides had been torn away and Estarossa being here and looking like that did nothing to help. All it did was make you feel sick.
'To what do I owe the pleasure, Elizabeth?' Estarossa's smile was almost pleasant. He looked almost back to normal. 'Did you really come just to see me? I must admit, I missed you too.'
Elizabeth's hand on your shoulder was trembling. 'Why can't I remember?' she was mumbling to herself.
And that made you frown. Elizabeth had never had trouble with her memories before, not once they'd returned. No, you had the monopoly on that. But this memory ... all memories involving Estarossa ... losing all your memories and getting them back slowly had allowed you to feel something different about the ones with him. Like a different flavour in a familiar dish. Or a word on the tip of your tongue that you couldn't quite reach. Or a sneeze that refused to be sneezed and just tickled your nose.
'[Y/n], Lady Elizabeth.' Guila's voice broke you from your thoughts. Her armour pushed against you. 'Stay back and get behind me.'
In that moment, the almost making Estarossa seem normal disappeared. There was not even a little bit. He stumbled and his eyes turned red, darkness creeping down his cheeks like tear tracks. Tendrils of darkness started to grow from his body, waving in the air like fingers.
'What am I doing here?' he said, his voice oddly strained like it cost him a huge effort just to say anything at all. 'Wait a minute. I remember. I came to steal the Commandments.' His eyes were bulging and his hands kept clenching into fists and relaxing again. 'If I can absorb all of them and surpass my brother, then I ...' Estarossa's voice trailed off into laboured breaths as he took unsteady steps forward. Darkness spread from each footfall. 'I will truly become Meliodas.' His walk was more assured now, his eyes fixed unwaveringly on where you knew Elizabeth stood behind you. 'Elizabeth. Elizabeth. Elizabeth. Dear Elizabeth.'
As Estarossa got closer, Guila leant back in either shock, disgust or fear. Maybe all three. You didn't blame her. The urge to grab Elizabeth and run was almost overwhelming but you knew you'd never be able to escape this Estarossa. Not with your power still rising into sudden peaks. Not with your head spinning with memories that felt weird. And not without your friends.
He was still getting closer. Guila tensed to attack.
'You mustn't fight him,' said Elizabeth loudly.
But Guila didn't listen.
'Shot Bomb!'
Her power hit Estarossa dead on. Other attacks from the Holy Knights joined in, engulfing Estarossa until he was obscured in light and dust. Elizabeth clung to your shoulders and you just watched, your sword hanging limply at your side.
In the midst of combined attacks was a dark, pointed shape with glowing red eyes. It was getting closer, barely encumbered by the power. Just when you thought this was it, Diane's voice rang out behind you.
'Time for Diamond Shield!'
The beautifully carved metal shield burst from the ground just in time. Estarossa's attack hit it with a resounding clang. The ground shook.
'What a crock,' said King as he flew higher. 'Meliodas isn't a big, hairy lunk like you.'
Again, you had to fight back your laughter. You really wished Meliodas was here right now. But your smile faded too quickly. Yeah ... you really really wished Meliodas was here right now.
Another explosion ripped through the air and jolted you back to reality. Frantic, you searched through the dust, but Elizabeth was safe, guarded by Guila and Diane's shield.
The clanking of armour came from behind you as the Holy Knights got to their feet. But apart from that there was silence. No sign of Estarossa.
Guila stepped forward and gave the shield a pat. 'Looks like it's all clear.'
A flash of light.
Guila dropped.
'Guila, no!' Elizabeth ran to the fallen knight's side.
And you followed. Because the shield had been sliced through as if it was made from paper. And looming over the top was Estarossa. He leered down at you.
Still smiling, he stepped forward and you tensed but two shapes blurred through the air. Sariel and Tarmiel's attacks were short-lived, though, and Estarossa knocked them to the ground without blinking.
'Hey, Elizabeth,' Estarossa said as his eyes narrowed, 'it's too noisy out here. So come with me. We'll go somewhere a bit quieter.' He was coming even closer. You stepped between the two of them and hoped no one saw that your legs were shaking. But Estarossa's eyes never left Elizabeth. They didn't even flicker to you. Instead, he leant around you as if you were nothing but a tree and kept talking. 'Somewhere from our past. You know, that place you and I always used to sneak off to.'
You frowned. Was he talking about ...? No. There was no way he was talking about the theatre. Only you and Meliodas went there. And you took Elizabeth when she was a child. But no one else should know about it.
'How do you know about that place?' Your voice trembled a little.
Estarossa's eyes finally flicked to yours but he looked back to Elizabeth quickly. You were kind of glad; his gaze made you shiver.
'That's right.' Estarossa was only talking to Elizabeth. 'It was our little secret. Our private spot. Just like all couples should have.'
The way he was ignoring you wasn't making you as angry as it normally would. You felt sick.
'No.' Elizabeth's voice made you jump. 'You are Estarossa. We never had a relationship like that.'
Estarossa's lips twisted up into a smile. 'Estarossa? You mean that loser kid brother of mine? We may have the same father, but he lacks the power of Darkness.' His voice was cut off by a choked yell.
Using this, you grabbed the unmoving Guila with one hand, snagged Elizabeth's sleeve with the other and began pulling them away from Estarossa. He had fallen to his knees, pained gargles still pouring from his throat.
Once you had set Guila down in a slightly safer space, you turned to look at Elizabeth. She had let you pull her away, but you could sense she had done so reluctantly. Which was stupid. So you looked at her and saw she was watching Estarossa, not with fear or disgust, but with concern. Just as you realised that, she yanked her arm from your grasp and hurried back to Estarossa, who was now writhing on the floor.
'What is it?' she asked, standing at his side. 'What's wrong with you? Estarossa?'
His arm shot out and you ran. Quick enough to knock Elizabeth out the way. Not quick enough to stop Estarossa's hand from grabbing you by the throat. Too tight. You gasped.
'Oh?' Estarossa sneered, his face much too close to yours. 'Looks like I caught a filthy Goddess. But I have no need for you.' He tossed you to the side and you skidded, the rocky ground scraping against your exposed skin. 'You belong to Meliodas. Elizabeth belongs to me.'
He stalked towards Elizabeth again but you sprang forward and managed to slice through his arm.
'Actually,' you said as you slammed a kick into his side, 'I don't belong to anyone.' He managed to block your sword from hitting his throat. 'And neither does Elizabeth. Love isn't ownership.' This time you kicked him right in the sternum. 'It's a partnership.'
Estarossa looked down at his severed arm with interest before a tendril of darkness snapped it back into place. 'You Goddesses are all the same,' he said, smirk back in place. 'Talking nonsense, looking down on everyone, thinking you're better than the rest of us.' With each sentence he took a step closer to you until you had to crane your neck just to keep glaring at him. 'But you're wrong. They don't need you. I don't need you.'
You blinked and he was gone. Elizabeth cried out and you turned. Estarossa had managed to grab her by the neck. Your eyes widened and you tried to run but you couldn't. You tried again. Why couldn't you move? You looked down at your feet and saw a lumpy mass of darkness had covered your feet and was climbing up your legs. It was at your knees. At your hips. You tried to hit it with your sword, but now it was climbing your arms. Your chest felt tight, your heart beating too fast.
Estarossa was in front of you again. He had carried Elizabeth over, her feet off the ground, her hands scrabbling against his hold on her neck. He leant closer so you could feel his breath on your cheeks. 'Elizabeth doesn't need you.'
'Let her go.' You snarled and struggled, but the darkness was unyielding. You could only watch as Elizabeth gasped for air. 'Let her go!'
But Estarossa ignored you, speaking only to Elizabeth. 'Even as a young man, I was always staring at you. The son of the Demon King born without Darkness.' He giggled madly. 'The weakling who couldn't even kill a mere insect. Everyone was always sniggering at me behind my back.'
'Let me go.' Elizabeth's voice was tiny. 'Please stop.'
'Please stop,' you echoed, tears in your eyes. The darkness had grown to your chest and was now starting on your throat. It was too tight. Too hot. A disgusting feeling like this power had gone off somehow. Like it was rotten.
Estarossa kept talking, ignoring you both. 'But you never treated me like that. Nor did [Y/n] and Meliodas. You were the only ones who never laughed at me. Then, after a while, I came to realise that I desired you for myself. But you never returned my feelings. I was nothing more than a friend to you. It was such torture!'
This was all wrong. You were supposed to be able to save Elizabeth and Meliodas. You were supposed to be strong enough. The darkness oozed over your chin.
Elizabeth met your eyes and you watched as she somehow raised an arm. Her power rained down, catching Estarossa full in the face and he let her go. Elizabeth dropped to the ground, coughing. At the same time, the darkness stopped growing. You tried to slow your breaths.
'Move in now!' Howzer's shout split the air. The Holy Knight's charged.
Diane scooped up Elizabeth and looked back at you.
'Go,' you yelled. The darkness squeezing you began to recede. 'I'll be fine.'
While Estarossa's power was immense, it appeared he didn't really have control over it. The longer he was distracted fighting the Holy Knights, the quicker you would be freed.
The sounds of the battle continued. The darkness shrank 'til it was just under your belly button. You heard shouts and blows and cries. It was at your knees.
And then an unsettling silence fell.
You looked around. No one was moving.
An eerie red light began to glow. You raised a hand to your eyes and blinked hard but you could still see it, burning through your eyelids.
Estarossa yelled. And the power erupted. It tore through the ground, through the air, through everything. Chaos. Too loud. Everything was falling apart and breaking. You fell to your knees. Where was Elizabeth?
You got to your feet, trying to walk forward over the heaving ground. But all you could see was Estarossa.
The darkness he had used to trap you was covering him now. It poured from his eyes. He threw his head back and screamed. 'He lied to me! Bastard! How could he lie to me? Why didn't he tell me?'
'Estarossa.' You stumbled closer. Estarossa kept writhing. 'Your body is rejecting those Commandments. You need to get rid of them right now!'
'You!' His eyes bulged as he glared at you. 'You ruined it all!'
And the darkness covering his body spread to you too. This time it didn't need to grow. It was already covering you whole body up to your neck. It covered your mouth. You began to panic.
'Estarossa, please!'
You started. That was Elizabeth's voice. Your eyes found her. She was too close. You couldn't breathe.
'Be strong,' she kept saying. 'Don't lose yourself! Otherwise they'll consume you entirely.'
'I don't think there's anything you can say that will get through to him,' said Diane.
'Let us deal with this,' said King. 'You can take shelter somewhere safe.'
'Wait you two—'
And the ground beneath Elizabeth's feet exploded. The darkness grabbed her too. You could feel your heartbeat in your head.
'I was at a loss. It was hopeless.' Estarossa's voice was strained. 'So I decided to confide in my brother about the feelings I had for you. And that's when Meliodas said those words to me. "I understand," he said. "Let me play matchmaker for you and Elizabeth."'
Elizabeth blinked and tilted her head. 'That ... doesn't sound like something my father would say.' She met your eyes. 'Besides, you're his brother. My uncle. That would be wrong. You have to be remembering it wrong.'
Estarossa threw his head back. 'But he did! He said it!'
Your head was spinning. Too tight. You needed to breathe. This was so wrong. Too tight. Somewhere, Diane and King were still fighting. Were they close by? Where was Elizabeth? Where were you? This was too much. You needed to breathe.
'Elizabeth.' Estarossa's voice was too loud. Elizabeth's cries of pain were too loud. 'If it means losing you, then I might as well devour you. Prepare to become part of me forever!'
No. You tried to raise your arm. Nothing. You tried to move your hand. Nothing. You blinked and a fresh wave of tears poured down your cheeks.
Elizabeth, help me.
You were starting to hallucinate.
'I'll devour you!'
Brother.
Who was speaking?
'Stop this!' Elizabeth shouted. You blinked. 'Please don't hurt anybody else, all right? I'll do whatever you ask of me.'
Your eyes widened. No. You tried to shout. No. Elizabeth, please.
Elizabeth's power floated through the air like little lavender fireflies. It fell on the Holy Knights, the Sins, the Archangels and Derieri, healing their wounds and returning their strength. Your breath was slower but more jagged. You had to stop her. You had to stop Estarossa. But you couldn't move. Your breaths became too shallow again.
'No, Elizabeth, you can't,' said Diane softly.
No, Diane, you have to scream. You have to fight. Please. Someone. Stop her. Stop this.
'Don't worry about me,' said Elizabeth. She smiled at you.
'Elizabeth, stop!' Hawk shouted but didn't do anything else. Why wasn't anyone doing anything? Why were they just staring like that?
You tried to scream but there was no sound, just the vibration of your lips, your teeth, your whole skull. Your ears popped.
Your vision was blurring. But you could see Estarossa's wings beat once. You could see him and Elizabeth becoming smaller and smaller before disappearing over the horizon.
And then you couldn't see anything.
—
King bit his lip and looked around. Liones was still standing, but smouldering and broken. There were too many corpses of Demons and people alike. Thanks to Elizabeth, most of their unit had come away unscathed, but still ... not enough.
Everyone was silent as they looked to the horizon where Estarossa had disappeared. But King looked at [Y/n]. The lumpy black mass binding her had disappeared with Estarossa but she must have fallen unconscious at some point and hadn't yet woken up. Instead, [Y/n] just laid on the ground almost as if she were asleep. No. King chewed his lip. Almost like she was a broken doll.
'Grand Master, we must rescue Princess Elizabeth at once,' said a Holy Knight.
Howzer scowled. 'I know that! But how? With him flying away, we don't have many options.'
'I'll chase him.' King flew down, clutching Chastiefol under one arm.
'What?'
'Hold on,' said Diane, worry clouding her eyes. 'You can't go alone.'
'[Y/n] will be waking up any second.' King tried to smile. It didn't last long. 'Besides, the Archangels are dead now, so—'
'Who did you say was dead?'
That voice ... King didn't recognise that voice. He turned and gasped. 'Is that Sariel?'
The Archangel looked quite unrecognisable. She was pretty, King supposed, but no where near as pretty as Diane. Sariel and Tarmiel began to explain, but King wasn't listening. [Y/n] had just started to stir.
King flew to her side just as she sat up. '[Y/n], are you – are you okay?' he asked somewhat lamely. Of course she wasn't okay.
'My head hurts,' she mumbled, rubbing her temples.
'I meant more about Elizabeth.'
[Y/n]'s shoulders started to shake. 'Again,' she said so quietly. 'I failed. Again. And again. And again.' Each time she said again, [Y/n] slammed a fist into the ground until it cracked. 'Why King?' She looked up at him with tears streaming down her cheeks. 'Why can't I do anything?'
King opened his mouth to say something but no words came out. [Y/n]'s eyes looked like broken glass.
'But you can do something, [Y/n],' came Diane's voice. She had crouched down beside them. 'King and the Archangels are going after Estarossa right now. You can go with them.'
'I'll just mess it up again.' [Y/n]'s chin wobbled. 'I know I will. Somehow I always do.' Her voice rose hysterically with each sentence. 'I messed up with Melascula so Meliodas felt like he had to ... like he had to ... do what he did. And I messed up just now with Elizabeth. And I messed up—'
'[Y/n].' King didn't shout but spoke loudly enough to cut her rising hysteria. 'Take a deep breath.' She did. 'Remember what Ban said? When you don't know what else to do—'
'You fight.' Behind the cracks in [Y/n]'s eyes, a fire began to glow. She got to her feet somewhat stiffly but didn't stumble. 'Thanks, King. Thanks, Diane.'
—
Above your head, Sariel and Tarmiel hovered looking exactly as they had done three thousand years ago. It didn't make your head spin as much to see them anymore. Maybe because Estarossa had gone. Whatever the reason, you were greatful.
'All right then,' said Sariel with a half smile down to you.
Tarmiel folded his arms. 'Let's go. It's time to annihilate that troublesome Estarossa.'
Yes. You clenched your fists and unfurled your wings. Estarossa was going to pay. Your stomach churned uneasily but you ignored it.
'I can help you,' said Derieri. She walked toward your group. 'Let me go too.'
You managed to smile and nodded. But before you could agree, Sariel spoke.
'Oh, come on,' he said with a dismissive smile. 'You must be joking, Derieri. Now what could you possibly do to help us?'
'And even if you could,' continued Tarmiel, 'there isn't a single person here who trusts you.'
'Excuse me,' you said loudly, 'but I trust her.'
'So do I,' said King.
'Me too,' said Diane.
The Archangels gaped. 'Huh?'
Derieri frowned and peered suspiciously up at King and Diane. '[Y/n] I get – kind of – but you two?'
King smiled. 'The way I see it, I trust [Y/n] and Lady Elizabeth and they once risked their lives to save you guys.'
You and Derieri gasped at the same time. How on earth could they know about that?
'Anyway,' King continued, ignoring your confusion, 'we're facing a powerful enemy and that means the more help we can get the better. Right?' He directed the question to Sariel and Tarmiel.
Sariel raised one eyebrow. 'It seems the rumour were true. I'd heard that you Seven Deadly Sins were a ragtag group of ... bizarre personalities. But with Meliodas and [Y/n] leading you, I can't say I'm too surprised.'
Tarmiel barked a laugh.
'Hey!' You raised a fist and stuck your tongue out at them.
King huffed a laugh and half turned in the direction Estarossa had gone. 'Come on. We've got a rescue to pull off.'
You took off, leading the way. If what Estarossa had said was true, you knew exactly where he was going to be. Which still didn't make sense. You had a feeling it would make sense if you could just punch Estarossa in the face.
'Be careful,' Diane called. 'See you soon!'
'We're counting on you,' said Howzer.
You looked back once, just once, over your shoulder. Diane was smiling. Howzer looked determined. Gowther and Hawk were somewhere down there. And all those Holy Knights. They had better be careful too.
—
Gilthunder stared at the writhing black mass covering Camelot Castle in disbelief. Something was in the back of his throat and his head felt tight. 'What in the world is that? I've never seen anything like it.'
'It's an incredibly powerful Zone of Darkness that was generated by Meliodas himself after having fused with the Commandments.' If Merlin was shocked at all, her voice certainly didn't betray it. 'Infiltrating it by teleportation or magical power will be impossible. And the murderous intent emanating from inside is almost like a warning. I'd say the captain is adamant about not wanting us to get in his way.'
Margaret – no, Ludociel. Gilthunder shook his head. That was not Margaret. Not with those blazing orange eyes that held no warmth.
'Now listen up, everyone, and stay close to me,' said Ludociel.
He raised his sword high. An incredibly bright light began to shine until it solidified into what looked like a giant crystal with Gilthunder, Ludociel, Merlin, Escanor and Hendrickson in its centre. And with a great shaking and sound like glass breaking, the crystal broke through the surface of the Darkness.
It felt like they were falling through the Earth or falling through space. Darkness pressed up against the surface of the crystal angrily like it wanted to get it. Gilthunder felt that if he had had to do this alone, he might possibly have lost his mind. Instinctively, he shifted closer to Margaret. No! Ludociel. That was Ludociel. Being this close to him was messing with Gilthunder's head because he still smelt like Margaret. He went to move back, but Ludociel turned to look at him. And Gilthunder gasped.
Those were Margaret's eyes. Soft and brown. But it still wasn't Margaret's voice that spoke.
'Once we've all made our way inside of this, that's it,' said Ludociel. 'At that point, there's no going back.'
Gilthunder gasped. He couldn't mean ...
'There's only one way to escape from this Darkness. That would be by killing its master and creator, which is Meliodas himself.'
'What?' Gilthunder couldn't blink. 'We can't.'
'No, there's another way to do this,' said Merlin. Gilthunder's knees went weak with relief. 'By turning Meliodas back to the way that he was. Understand?'
Escanor straightened up. 'Don't think we forgot what [Y/n] said.'
Ludociel said nothing, just turned to look straight ahead. Gilthunder watched his reflection and tried not to think about Margaret.
—
Somewhere far, far away, Ban was walking. He didn't know where he was or where he had been. The wind burnt his skin and the ground froze his bare feet. Every breath scorched his insides. But he kept walking. Because it didn't matter where he was or where he had been, it only mattered where he was going. He was going to find his best friend.
'Wait for me, Captain. I'm coming.'
—
You flew without looking back. Ignoring the additions to your group. Ignoring the ache beginning to spread across your back. Ignoring the familiarity of where you were flying and the memories it brought. One way or another, you were going to win this fight. You were going to keep the promises you made.
—
Even further away, Meliodas woke to the sounds of Purgatory. The bubbling of lava, the shrieking of strange beasts, the howling of relentless winds. He got to his feet. He had made this journey before and he would make it again. He wasn't going to abandon them. Not his friends. Not Elizabeth. And not [Y/n].
'I have to return to them.'
Somehow he walked on, his steps slow but steady. Meliodas walked and climbed and walked and climbed. He stumbled once, but he had made it.
Meliodas looked up at his father and glared.
'I swear I'm coming back to you.'
