Ill Be Kind

5 years old

Tyler ran through the wood-chipped play ground, a laugh erupting from his pink lips. The yellow rays of sun cascaded over him and his blue overalls. He was playing tag with some kids on the playground.

"You can't catch me!" Tyler teased.

He grinned, exposing his missing baby teeth. Tyler let out a squeal when the boy who was "it" began running after him. He giggled and screamed until he was suddenly flying through the air.

Tyler's big brown eyes grew wide with fear as he was pushed off of his feet. He hid the ground with a thud and immediately began crying at the pain. The wood chips poked into his hands and knees, but didn't break skin.

Little Tyler was too focused on how much everything hurt to realize there was a boy he'd never seen before sitting next to him.

"Are you okay?" The boy asked, clearly worried.

"N-No!" Tyler cried as he brought himself to sit criss-cross next to the boy.

"What happened?"

"He pushed me!" Tyler pointed at the boy that was still "it" as he chased around girls.

"He's a meanie... He stole my juice box at lunch!"

Tyler crossed his arms, face stuck in a pout.

"He sure is a meanie," Tyler mumbled in agreement.

"What's your name?"

"Tyler."

"I'm Josh!" The boy smiled at Tyler, beaming happiness.

"Are we friends?" Tyler asked, brushing off the front of his white shirt and overalls.

"Yeah," Josh concluded. "I like your overalls."

Tyler giggled and hooked his thumbs under the straps. "Thanks! I like your shoes! My daddy has the same kind."

Josh looked down at the miniature converse on his feet, unable to wipe the smile off his face. Tyler was the same way, grinning at his friend. He had completely forgotten about the incident that had happened seconds prior. Both boys were happy to have made new friends.

"Wanna swing?" Josh asked.

"I dunno how to," Tyler answered, cheeks turning pink in embarrassment.

"That's okay! I'll push you!" Josh said excitedly.

"Okay! Race you!" Tyler was on his feet in a matter of seconds as he raced Josh to the swing set.

Josh ended up winning, which resulted in Tyler pouting again.

"No fair!" Tyler whined, arms folded over his chest.

"Yes fair! I won!"

"You cheated!"

"You're a poor sport!"

"You're mean!"

Josh frowned as his eyes began to swell up with tears.

"I'm not mean..." Josh defended himself.

Tyler felt guilty. He didn't mean to make his new friend cry. He dropped his arms to pull Josh in for a hug.

"I'm sorry, Joshie. You're not mean. You're the kindest person I know!"

"I-I am?" Josh sniffled into Tyler's shoulder.

"Yeah! I'm happy I have the kindest person in the world for my best friend!"

"I'm your best friend?" Josh asked, tears long gone now.

"Yeah!" Tyler said happily.

Josh smiled, making Tyler's heart feel happier. He was proud of himself for fixing Josh's sadness and making him happy again.

"You're my best friend too," Josh informed him. "Now let me push you!"

Tyler giggled as he hopped on the swing. He held onto the warm metal chains tightly. Josh pulled the swing back and pushed it forward, a laugh sounding from Tyler.

"Higher Joshie!" He laughed excitedly, squinting his eyes to keep the sun out of them.

Josh laughed too and pushed Tyler higher.

"Kick your feet, T! In, out, in out."

Tyler did what Josh said, and pretty soon he was swinging all by myself. Josh walked out in front of Tyler so the boy could see he really was doing it alone.

"Oh my gosh! Joshie! You taught me how to swing!" Tyler giggled, pumping his legs.

"You're doing it, T!"

"I'm flying!" Tyler grinned, tilting his head to the sky.

The wind blew through his brown locks, leaving them a ruffled mess. His legs were beginning to get sore from how hard he was trying, but he didn't want to stop.

"I told you you're the kindest person ever!" Tyler said.

Josh's small lips formed a toothy smile. He hadn't smiled this much in a while. Tyler made him feel happy. He was lucky he had such a kind friend, too.

Josh joined Tyler, sitting on the swing next to him. The two kids swung with each other, both singing some song they'd been taught in class.

"Hey T?" Josh asked when they'd finishing singing.

"Yeah?"

"Will your mommy let you come over to my house after school?"

"I dunno," Tyler said as he began to bring himself to a stop.

"Does she pick you up or do you ride the bus?"

"Picks me up."

"My mommy picks me up, too. We can ask them after school."

Tyler nodded in agreement to the plan. The two boys hopped off the swings when they heard their teacher blow the whistle. Recess was over. It was time to go back inside.

Josh and Tyler ran to the line, Josh letting Tyler beat him even though they weren't officially racing. He didn't want to make Tyler pout again. The class began to walk inside as the teacher informed them of what they would be doing. Josh and Tyler walked at the back of the line, too deep in conversation over their favorite cartoons to hear.

I'm soooo excited for this story you wouldn't BELIEVE it! For anyone who is confused, this story is based off of the song "Come To Me" by the Goo Goo Dolls. Each chapter is going to be named after a lyric from the song :-) I've attached the song so you can give it a listen, it's super cute.

Hope you enjoyed! If you did I'd appreciate a comment and vote!
