Chapter 10
Roman sighed, flipping a pen through his fingers. Although he'd never admit it, his brother was right. School was very boring when the novelty of choosing to go or not had worn off. Taking aim, he threw his pen at the back of Daniel's head, where it hit him dead centre. Daniel's hand flew to the back of his head as he whipped around, glaring around to see whoever had done it. Roman wiggled his fingers at Daniel and made a small punching motion with his hand to make sure Daniel got the picture.
"Mr Charming, would you like to tell me why you are turning around?" Doc, the teacher, asked. Slowly, Daniel turned back to face the front of the classroom.
"No reason, sir." He growled. Doc pushed his glasses up his nose slightly.
"Good." He said before carrying on with the lesson. Roman let out a quiet snicker at the back of the classroom.
"Mr Queen, your voice travels." Doc said without turning around. "So would you kindly stop laughing?"
Roman cleared his throat slightly. "Yes sir. Sorry sir."
Someone shoved Remus in the corridor. He whirled around, looking for whoever it was but whoever they were, they'd disappeared into the sea of people. Remus sighed and pulled his beanie further down on his head, opening his locker. A piece of paper that had been slipped into locker floated down to his feet. Remus bent down and picked it up. His heart sank slightly as he read it.
'Be prepared.'
'I got friends on the other side.'
'Mother knows best.'
You don't belong here. Go home, Isle kid.
Remus looked around and saw a boy with blonde hair and blue eyes glance at him before walking on. He crumpled the piece of paper in his hand and grabbed his books. But he slipped the piece of paper into his pocket. He didn't know why. Building up evidence, he supposed.
"Hey, Roman!" He called out, catching up with his twin. "It's 'Good Deeds' next, isn't it?"
"Um, yeah." Roman said, surprised by the sudden appearance of his brother from seemingly nowhere. "Why? I don't think I've ever seen you so excited in a school building before."
Remus shrugged. "I want to stay here. Don't want to be an Isle kid anymore. And there's only one way to do that, isn't there? And that's go to class."
"Um, Remus?" Patton asked, coming over to the desk where the twins were sitting.
"Yeah?" Remus asked, looking up from his school book.
"Can I talk to you? You're not in trouble or anything." Remus shrugged.
"Um, okay." Remus stood up and followed Patton out into the empty corridor.
"Are you okay? You're not as disruptive as you usually are." Patton was about a head shorter than Remus but he still somehow managed looked worried and parental without it being ridiculous. Remus shrugged and shoved his hand deep in his pockets, clutching the crumpled note.
"I'm fine." He lied. Patton tilted his head to the side.
"Yeah and I'm straight. What's wrong?"
Remus rolled his eyes. "You wouldn't get it."
"It doesn't matter about 'getting it', what matters is helping you get back to your old, annoying self."
Remus laughed half-heartedly and drew out the note. "This is what's wrong. Prejudice. Can I go back in now, Patton?"
Patton saw that he wasn't going to get anything more out of Remus so his sighed. "Yeah, I suppose that'd be best."
"Okay, Re, what's wrong?" Roman asked, closing their dorm room door and leaning against it, facing his brother.
"Ro, what? Everything's fi-"
"Don't pull that bullshit with me, Re. I've known you my whole life and this isn't you. This is a depleted version of you. So what's up?"
Remus sighed and laughed slightly. He dug the note out of his pocket and smoothed it out, putting it on the desk. Roman picked it up and skimmed it over quickly. His face grew dark, dangerous, and he opened the door.
"Where're you going?"
"To talk to someone about this. This isn't okay."
Knock, knock, knock.
Virgil sighed and looked up at the door. "Whoever you are, if you want to see Jan, he's out at a stupid club of his. Go away."
Knock, knock, knock.
Virgil sighed again and got up, going to open the door. "I told you, go aw- Roman?"
Roman smiled awkwardly. "Hey Princey. Can I come in?"
"What d'you want?"
"To come in."
Virgil sighed. "Sure, fine. Whatever." He let Roman in and sat down on his bed. "Why're you here and what d'you want?"
Roman scratched the back of his head. "Did you mean what you said yesterday? You know the whole accept me and my brother thing?"
Virgil shrugged and sighed. "I mean, I said it."
"That's not an answer." Virgil sighed again.
"I guess? Look, what d'you want me to say? Honestly? I didn't. But I said it so I guess I have to say I meant it, don't I?"
Roman nodded his head. "Right. Just what I thought." He stood up. "Then you can't help me with this. I'll go find Janus, maybe he will help."
Virgil sighed. "Look, you are not going to come into my dorm room, ask me a cryptic question to then just leave. What is it?"
Roman laughed slightly. "It's this." He said, holding the note out to Virgil. "Re found this in his locker earlier today."
Virgil read through the note and his face softened. "Roman, I-"
"I don't want sympathy and neither does Re. We want someone to fix this. Can you?"
Virgil looked from the note to Roman and back to the note again.
"I'll try. I'll really try."
What, you wanted a fluffy book? If you want fluff, you are on the wrong account, sorry. My speciality is very long, angsty books.
Bye,
Queenie
