Four

Louisa Lloyd

I open my eyes slowly, the light entering the room too bright for this time of the day. I cover my eyes with the covers and hear a muffled whisper next to me.

Who in the brightest heck is sleeping next to me?

That's when I notice that there's an arm wrapped around my waist, pulling me to a very warm chest. I sigh, not really wanting to leave the safety of these arms.

"Time to wake up, Lou."

"No...." I bury my head on the person's chest and smell grass and a hint of coffee. It's very familiar and it brings a smile to my face.

"What are you smiling about?" The person plays with my hair and I giggle, not wanting to open my eyes.

"Nothing."

"Come on, we have to leave."

"No..." I slap the person's hand away and turn around, my back now turned to this guy.

Wait a second.

Wait a second!

Wait a flipping year! Why am I in bed with a guy?

I quickly open my eyes and survey the room I'm in. There's nothing special about it, just a bedside table, a bed, a small wardrobe and a door I believe leads to a corridor. I then proceed to check my clothes, which are still on my body. Thank you, Mother Nature!

When I decide to look down at the guy next next to me, I hold my breath and close my left eye, too scared to look.

"Morning." Isaac smiles mischievously at me.

"What am I doing here?!" I ask a little too loud and he freezes.

"Be quiet! My father can't know you're here. He would probably lock-" He stops talking with a pained expression on his face and hides it with a forced smile. "Let's get you out of here before we get in trouble."

I have a feeling I wouldn't be the one getting in trouble if his father saw us. What is he hiding? Why isn't he telling me what's worrying him so much? But who am I to judge, right? I've been carrying this dead weight since last night, when I saw Derek...

Let's stop.

"Fine. What day is today?" I ask groggily.

"Friday."

"So we have to go to school?"

"Unfortunately." He rubs my arms as I get up and he asks, a sudden blush appearing on his cheeks. "We didn't do anything. You fell asleep on Boyd's car and I brought you in and-"

I interrupt him by placing my hands on his shoulders.

"Don't worry about it. I trust you. And I remember."

•^•^•^•^•^•

My phone rings and Derek covers his ears in annoyance. I can't look at him in the face since that day at the clinic. I don't think he understands how scared I was. He tried talking to be a few times but I either ran away or gave him the cold shoulder. Can you blame me?

"Yo." I greet whoever is calling me, not bothering to check. "Lou's phone."

"It's me." Isaac breathes and sounds weirder than usual.

"Isaac? Is everything okay?"

"Lou." He breathes. "I need your help."

"Where are you?" I ask, raising to my feet and grabbing my coat.

"At the school."

"But it's a Sunday night, what are- you know what? I'll be there in five."

I stop walking and balance on my feet for a while. I can ask Derek for his car keys or I can walk. I'll take me less than ten minutes to get there by car but I've never tried walking to school.

A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do.

"Derek." He jumps at my voice.

"Louisa, I'm so sorry-"

"I don't want to talk about it now. I need your keys. Isaac needs me."

"I'm not giving you my keys!" He protests.

"Fine! Then I'm not talking to you."

"Will you talk to me when you get back?" Derek sighs, running his fingers across his face.

"If you lend me your keys..." I tap my chin. "Maybe."

"Take them." He tosses me the keys and it takes a lot of me to just smile at him.

"Thanks."

As I'm about to open the door of Derek's expensive car, he opens the house's door and leans on the outside wall.

"This boy must mean a lot to you."

I look down at my hands as a tiny smile finds its way to my lips. I shake my head and giggle at the thought of the blue eyed boy I've been thinking about none stop.

"Yeah, he does."

I get in the car and drive as fast as I can, trying to get to Isaac on time. Only three minutes later, as I park, I cannot see him.

I search for his contact on my phone and press call. He's no where to be seen and he doesn't pick up his phone. Can't he see I'm worried now? You don't just call people in the middle of the night and expect them to not worry!

"Isaac!" I call his name. "Isaac are you here?"

No answer. I walk faster to the lacrosse field, my first guess. Maybe he's having a hard time scoring and needs help. No, he wouldn't call this late because of such an unimportant matter. He is either in trouble or hurt. Let's hope it's option number one.

"Isaac?" I turn around when I hear a sound coming from the bushes next to the door. "Is that you?"

I carefully pull some twigs aside and sigh in relief when Isaac's body comes into view.

"I was so worrie-" I stop talking when I REALLY look at him. He has deep bruises on his arms and looks miserable. "What happened? Who did that to you?"

Isaac doesn't look me in the eye as I ask him a couple questions. He doesn't answer either. He just stares at the grass under my feet and rocks back and forth, his chin resting on his knees.

"I need to know what happened." I place my hand on his hair and play with his curls. "You scared me to death! I didn't know what was wrong... Okay, I still don't know what's wrong!"

I laugh dryly and he lifts his eyes to mine. He seems to be fighting with himself, and I can't help but reach for his face. He looks so beaten up and sad...

"Isaac?" I call his name and he hums. "Do you trust me?"

"With my life."

"Then tell me what happened."

He sighs and pats the empty space next to him. When I cross my legs and direct my gaze to him, I notice the silent tears rolling down his face. I reach for his cheeks and wipe them, confused.

"Isaac..."

"My dad." He says.

What about his dad? Did he do this to him? Then I remember what he told me when I woke up in his room. How his father wouldn't be happy to find me there. It's normal for parents to be protective of their children and if I saw a girl on my son's bed I'd freak out.

Did his dad beat him because of me?

"What happened? Was it because of that day? When you took me to your house?"

He shakes his head. "No, he likes doing this once in a while. I believe it's a stress reliever for him."

"How could he?" I feel the tears behind my eyes and blink furiously to keep them there. "If you ever need any help, I'm here. You know that right?"

"I know." He takes my hand in his and smiles sadly at me. The moonlight hits the side of his face and he looks paler. "That's why I lo-"

There's a rustle of leaves behind the tree in front of us and we quickly get to our feet. A million thoughts run thought my mind: is it the Alpha? Or maybe Derek or Scott. Or maybe Isaac's father.

"Isaac." He puts his hand on my mouth and we walk backwards toward my car.

"Be quiet. It can be a wild animal and we don't want to anger it." He says and I nod against his hand. "Give me your keys."

I reach for my back pocket, where I kept the keys, but he beats me to it and grabs the keys.

Holy baby Jesus.

My heartbeat accelerates and I'm afraid he'll hear it. It's beating so frantically that I'm sure everyone can hear it. He unlocks the car and holds the driver's door open for me. When I'm safely inside, he closes my door and runs to the passenger's side.

"Can we just drive around for a while?" He asks quietly. "I want to tell you something."

I nod and decide to drive around some neighborhoods I recognize. Scott's house is right down this street and we'll be driving by Stiles' house in a few minutes.

After a few minutes of silence, I ask the question that has been bothering me for a while.

"Are you going to tell me now?"

"I have to, don't I?" He laughs dryly and runs his fingers through this hair. Can I do that too? "Let's just- I will tell you the short version. We'd have to stay here for hours otherwise."

Before starting, he takes a few deep breaths and brushed his hair, leaving me to wonder what's going on at his house. Why would a father do that kind of stuff to his only son? I know Isaac's mother died, he told me that when I told him about my family, keeping some details to myself, but that's no reason to abuse his kid.

This man is despicable and it hurts me to see Isaac like this.

"My father is a bad man." He starts, and from now on, he lets out all his worries and problems. "He has been hitting- no, spanking me and hurting me to hell and back since my mom died. That sounds really bad, and it is. And the worst part is the freezer... He has a damn freezer where he locks me after punishing me. That's the worst part. He comes back home and if there's something out of place or dirty... Punishment and then freezer."

Only now I understand Isaac's constant absence and lack of sleep. Now I understand the bruises I often see on his arms when he raises his arms and the sleeves of his shirt run down his arms. Now I understand Isaac's pain and sadness. No one should live like this.

"Isaac..." I feel the tears I've been trying to hide running freely down my face. "I'm so sorry! If there's anything I can do to help-"

"You've been doing enough since you got here." He smiles, and this time I see a glimpse of the happy Isaac I love so much. "You're the best person I've ever met and I feel good when I'm with you. Your happiness and cockiness and everything about you makes me happy, makes me forget about my shitty life. And for that, I owe you my life."

I lift my eyes to his and he lowers his face to meet mine. My stupid heart takes this as a cue to start beating like a hammer inside my chest and I blush violently. Isaac chuckles at the sight and I try to hide my face with my long brown hair. He grabs my chin and lifts my head back up.

"Don't hide your face from me." He whispers, his lips dangerously close to mine. "I love it when you blush."

I can feel his breath on my face and involuntarily close my eyes. We both sigh together and his lips are gracing the skin on my cheek, traveling down to my chin and then up to the corner of my lips.

The ringing of my phone interrupts our- I don't know, moment?- and Isaac sighs, burying his face on my shoulder. Just this little action makes my heart beat faster and I wonder what's happening to me.

I pick it up and find a text from Derek waiting for me to read it.

>>Derek: I don't care what's happening right now, but it's dangerous to be out at night. Come back as soon as you can.

That's what interrupted us?

I'm going to kill Derek.

And the problem: I didn't want Isaac to stop.

•^•^•^•^•^•

"Did you hear what happened to Lydia and Jackson last night?"

I slam my locker shut and involuntarily smile, the memories of last night invading my mind. Before taking Isaac home, he kissed my forehead and held my hand during the whole ride.

I shake my head at Stiles' words.

"I really have no idea." I admit.

"Where have you been yesterday? I tried calling you, and Derek said he didn't know where you were. You took his car and came back late. What are you up to?" Stiles looks like Angela when she's mad. He's taping his finger on the floor and eyeing me from up there. "Young lady, you better start explaining."

"Nuh-huh honey." I snap my fingers in front of his face and he scoffs in annoyance. "It's my life and you have nothing to do with it."

"Tell me where you were and I'll tell you about Scott and Derek." Stiles bribes me.

"No thanks." I smile as I carry my books out of the school building and into Derek's car. He let me use it today as well.

Because we will talk tonight. About everything.

"Don't tell me then!" Stiles throws his hands in the air and whispers the next words. "But I need you to come with me to Lydia's house. I'll explain on our way there."

Good thing I didn't make any plans for today. And he does explain everything that happened yesterday, maybe a little too deeply.

"So, you're telling me Lydia is possibly going cray-cray over that creature she saw yesterday?"

"Exactly."

"And what was it? A mountain lion?"

"This is Beacon Hills, Lou. After all you saw, do you really think it was a mountain lion?"

I don't bother answering, Stiles understands the look on my face. I grunt and grab Derek's keys from my bag.

"I'll meet you there." I wave my hand and hear Stiles walking behind me.

"How do you know where she lives?" He asks.

"Don't underestimate my powers, peasant."

•^•^•^•^•^•

Mrs Martins opens the door with a wide smile and greets me. I watch Stiles from the corner of my eye and he looks angry.

"Oh dear! It's been a while since I last saw you! Are you here to visit my baby girl?" She completely ignores Stiles. "Come on in!"

I smile gratefully and step inside, grabbing Stiles' hand in the process. He would've stayed outside if it wasn't for me.

THANK ME STILES!

"How is she?" I ask.

"See for yourself." She pats my head and knocks on her daughter's door. "Sweetheart, Louisa is here to see you." She looks at the boy next to me and asks his name. "And a Stiles."

"Louie!" Lydia sounds excited but then her face falls. "What the hell's a Stiles?"

Lydia's mother turns to Stiles with an embarrassed smile. I have to cover my lips to stop me from laughing.

"She's had a little something to ease her nerves. Go right in." Stiles slips inside the room with me right behind him and we approach Lydia's bed.

"What are you doing here?" She asks Stiles and opens her arms for me to hug her.

"Just wanted to make sure you're okay." I tell her as she hugs me tightly.

"Why? I know Lou is a good friend but I don't remember ever being close to you."

I know her words pierced Stiles' heart like a knife and I tap her head. She doesn't even react. Oh, she's so high on whatever she took to forget those events.

"Because I was kind of worried about you. You feeling all right?" Stiles says.

"I feel ffffffantastic." I giggle and start untangling Lydia's hair.

Stiles glances to the prescription bottle on the night stand and mouths 'give me that' to me. I toss it at him and he sighs.

"Bet you can't say 'I saw Susie sitting in a shoe shine shop' five times really fast."

"I saw Shusie... I shaw... I saw..." Lydia's gaze drifts and I sit straighter next to her. Stiles sits on the bed next to us, noticing both her look and change in demeanor.

Is she going to tell us what she really say yesterday? Was it one of Derek and Scott's friend? Like, one of them?

"What did you see?" I ask, running my finger on her back.

"Something..." Lydia whispers and her eyes focus on the window.

"Was it a mountain lion?" Stiles asks tentatively.

"Yeah. A mountain lion."

"You definitely saw a mountain lion? Or the cops told you it was a mountain lion?"

"A mountain lion." Lydia says, nodding her head vigorously.

I look at my left and grab one of her teddy bears. I hold it up on her face and smirk, knowing the answer she'll give me.

"What's this?" I ask.

"A mountain lion." I give up, setting the teddy bear back down.

Stiles looks adoringly down at Lydia whose eyes flutter close. I get up and give space for him to sit next to her.

"I guess I should leave and let you get back to the whole post traumatic stress thing."

He starts to get up, but then her hand closes over his.

"Stay."

"You want me to stay? Me?" Lydia gives a nod. "What about Lou?"

"Yes. Please, stay. Please, Jackson." Stiles goes from elated to deflated in a nanosecond. And I give him a sad smile.

The poor boy has it bad.

"And we're done here."

When he's ready to leave, Lydia's cellphone beeps with a text message and the curious me comes out to play.

"You want that?" Lydia nods at my question and Stiles picks up the phone, thumbs clicking on it.

"Uh, how do you get it to..." But he pauses, raising the phone to his eyes and I quickly walk to his side, looking at the phone from behind him.

On the screen shows a video of a dark shape walking through the store's front window. Stiles hits pause and his breath catches in his throat. I don't understand why until he shows me the zoomed in image. Standing there on two feet, a dark and monstrous silhouette with glowing red eyes...

The Alpha.

Stiles sends the video to his own phone and we leave Lydia with a small goodbye. I kiss her forehead before leaving and I give her mom a hug too. They're nice people.

Stiles hops into his jeep and gives me a small lecture before leaving.

"Go to school, there's this whole parent-teacher talk today and my dad will go with you. I told him you had no one to accompany you so he offered his help. Meet him at the school in an hour." He waves, driving by me. "And try not to get killed by the Alpha!"

If only he knew how those words scare me.

•^•^•^•^•^•

"Louisa Lloyd, our new student." Professor Harris says. "I have to admit, I expected you to be a very bad influence, but you surprised me. You're intelligent, your grades are higher than Miss Martin's and you're actually nice. Congratulations."

Mr Stilinski pats my shoulder after hearing this from the most hated teacher of this school. After what he said about his son, I wonder how he's able to contain his anger. Stiles is a good student, but he's always talking or not paying attention. It must be hard to hear that.

"Thank you, sir." I smile and he grabs some papers from his bag.

"I forgot to tell you that the volleyball coach wants you to try out for the team. He heard from your previous school and they told him how good you are at volleyball. Are you interested in joining the team?"

It'd be a pleasure to play volleyball here, but I don't know if I'm good enough. Back in London, the girls weren't athletic, they liked makeup and shopping, but not sports. I've seen girls here that enjoy sports like I do but they're so good!

"I have to think of it."

"I will inform coach then."

He dismisses us and Mr Stilinski accompanies me out the school, like a lot of other parents and teachers.

"I have to make a call, okay? Don't leave." Me Stilinski says and I nod.

I don't want to sound stupid but Harris' propose is not that appealing. I played volleyball before but haven't done that in a few months, with all the information I received. I like playing it but I don't know if I should. I need some help.

And I know exactly who to talk to.

Allison and Scott get out of her car and his mother approaches the pair, Allison's parents right behind her. I'm so curious that I follow them to the nervous looking couple.

"Where exactly have you been?" Scott's mom asks.

"Uh..." Scott starts, and I know for sure he's about to lie. "Nowhere."

I snort. So creative.

"Nowhere meaning not at school?" Someone give this woman a cookie, she's amazing!

"Kind of."

"It's my fault. It's my birthday and we were just-" Allison tries to explain but her father isn't buying it.

"Allison. In the car." He orders as Allison's mother comes through the crowd.

I look at the parking lot, searching for Mr Stilinski. This conversation is long gone and there's nothing I can do to help either of them. They're going to get grounded! I notice something sprinting through the parked cars and right near my legs. I let out a scream and watch as Isaac, from the other side of the parking lot, sends me a worried look.

Then, after my demonstration of how strong my lungs are, people start running around the school's grounds and I'm being thrown around by dozens of scared parents and teachers. I fall on my knees and hands, scratching both along the fall.

Cars swerve and honk as something races through the lot. I can't see what it is because of my fallen state, but I can tell it's some kind of wild animal.

A mountain lion?

No, it can't be a mountain lion! Not after all the rumors about that night at the video store. It has to be something else. Maybe that Alpha thing?

Note to self: do some werewolf related research.

The shape darts past parents, teachers and administrators racing in all directions. I start panicking, thinking about my own death. What if I die today right here? What if this Alpha wants to eat me? Will people be sad?

I should stop watching television.

I crawl around and stop near one of the cars, leaning for support. I breathe heavily as the creature runs past me. I look up, terrified when I see Allison's father reaching for a gun from his car.

I cover my eyes, already knowing what's about to happen. He is going to kill that thing. I don't want to die but I feel bad. A gunshot rings out and I let out the breath I didn't realize I was holding.

Mr Argent lowers the weapon, slowly coming forward. He helps me to my feet and curious me takes over again, so I follow him to inspect the damage. While everyone else in the parking lot seems to be a terrified mess, Allison's father seems perfectly and utterly calm. Like he's used to this.

We both approach the dying creature, which is clearly no Alpha...

It's a mountain lion.

•^•^•^•^•^•

"Derek, I think it's time." I toss him the keys and he catches them easily. "We have to talk."

"Princess, now is not a good time."

"Do I look like I care?" I scream in his face. "I'm tired of not knowing! When I first came here, I found out you didn't come to get me from the airport because you were in jail! Then I find out you and Scott are some kind of- I don't even know how to say it- werewolves? Really?"

He looks sad but determined not to tell me anything at the same time. But I'm going crazy not knowing what's happening around me, always afraid of finding the red glowing eyes of the Alpha staring at me.

"I'm going nuts just thinking... just imagining all of you dead! That Alpha thing could kill you all with one glare, I suppose!"

"Do you want the long or the shortened version?" Derek sighs and I feel relieved. I'll finally know the truth behind this wicked town and my friends' hidden lives.

"I want to know everything."

"Everything?" Derek throws his hands up and I raise my eyebrows at him.

"Did I stutter?" He shakes his head and I continue. "You better start explaining."

We sit near the window for almost two hours. He explains what a werewolf is and how you get turned; he also said he didn't need the bite, he was born a werewolf. He told me about the Alpha that bit Scott and is causing a lot of trouble around here.

He also warned me about the hunters. One of the reasons why I'll never want the so-called 'bite'.

He reveals that his family was a strong werewolf family. That surprised me, to be honest. When I asked if my family was like that too, he said we were special, but that their lineage didn't affect me.

Bummer...

"What do you mean with special?"

"You don't have to worry about that. If you were like them, the signs would be there." He ruffles my hair. "You asked me for an explanation, not family history."

I huff. I know this is what I asked for but when someone tells you your family is somehow 'special', and the town you're currently living in is full of supernatural creatures, you can't help but wonder.

What were they? If they weren't werewolves, what kind of creatures were they?

And what if Derek's wrong? What if I'm exactly like them but don't know it yet?
