037

I went out on my apartment balcony, glancing back at my empty flat inside, no furniture of mine in sight before I looked back out at the other apartment building right in front of mine, the hanging clothes line swaying in the wind from the room near my window from the other tenants as I took in a deep breath, placing my hands over the familiar railing.

"Goodbye everyone! I'll miss you!" I yelled out to no one in particular, my cheery voice bouncing off the walls as my hands cupped the sides of my mouth that was upturned in a nostalgic smile.

I'll miss this place.

"Shut the fuck up!" Another hostile voice yelled back in anger from somewhere I couldn't see as I let out a happy sigh.

Oh yes, I will most definitely miss this place.

Turning and reluctanctly going back inside, I focused my attention on the neighbors from the rooms next to mine who were standing awkwardly in the middle of my vacant living room, looking at me with both lost and expectant expressions as I pressed my lips together to keep my emotions in check.

"I've been living here for almost ten years and even though we haven't gotten to know eachother as much as I'd like through that given time I'll still miss everything about you guys. Ms. Shirley, I'll miss your loud opera music playing through my thin walls at five o'clock in the morning." I smiled, turning to a flowery patterned middle aged pudgy woman who scrunched her face slightly at me, folding her hands together with a stern look.

"Random druggie guy," I then turned to the shaggy haired, beanie wearing lanky man besides her as he peered at me through unkempt, shaggy, sandy blonde locks.

"I'll miss the smell of all that weed you smoke in the hallways everytime I get back from work." I truthfully say, remembering how I had to blink away the slight sting in my eyes with how clouded the air was with that foul smell of mary jane.

"And Herbert, I will miss you most of all," I sighed, staring at the elderly man with a loving smile as he blinked at me with dull, pale blue eyes.

"What did the annoying boy say?" He asked Ms. Shirley who not so subtly shifted away from his loud voice with a look of disdain etched across her round face as I placed my hand over my heart with a nostalgic expression.

Herbert still thinks I'm a pre-teen boy with a high voice.

"Who are you again?" Random druggie neighbor asked with slow, slurred words, raising his finger to point at me in confusion.

"I just came here for the cupcakes." Ms. Shirley suddenly humphed, straightening her posture as I blinked in realization, turning to grab the store bought box of cupcakes on the ground, taking one in my hand and stretching it out for her.

She sent me a pinched smile before ignoring the extended cupcake in my hand, grabbing the whole box that carried the other eleven small, frosted, cakes before walking by and exiting out of my empty flat without another word, leaving me with my last two neighbors as we awkwardly stood there, staring at the exit.

"Um," I blinked, tearing my gaze away from the door to look at the other two.

"You guys can split." I happily decided, offering Herbert the cupcake to share as the druggie guy glanced at the treat in interest as well.

"Why aren't you just a fine young lad." Herbert complimented with crinkly eyes, making me send him a bashful smile as I waved a dismissive hand in the air.

Aw shucks.

Tattooed knuckles knocked on the doorframe, bringing my attention to the entrance where Harry was leaning against with a straight face.

"That was the last of your stuff. Are you finished with your goodbyes yet?" He asked in a business like tone as I nodded with a happy grin.

"Yes, someone even screamed at me to shut up in the balcony when I was saying goodbye." I informed with a giddy look on my face as I ran to him, sprinting into his arms as he quickly caught me, causing the both of us to spin slightly before he stabled us.

"That was the first time anyone ever responded back to me out there." I told Harry in awe as he looked down at me.

"Yeah, that was me." He retorted after a few moments, making me send him a second glance as I blinked up at him, his stoic expression unwavering.

"Just because I love you doesn't mean you're not annoying." Harry stated, a teasing smirk forming over his face as he flicked my forehead, making me surpress my own smile with a frown as I rubbed at the hit skin while we walked side by side together out into the hallway.

"Be nice, it's my birthday today." I lightly teased when the cold breeze hit us once we were outside, sending him a coy glance as I studied his sharp emotionless features.

My first birthday not alone I thought as I smiled at him, looking away in content as I felt his eyes burn my face.

"Here," Harry suddenly said, taking out a small pink dessert box that held a cupcake for myself inside of it as I grinned.

It was chocolate, my favorite.

"Let's share." I whispered, happily huddling closer to him as I opened the cute package, taking out the cupcake and tearing the top part with the icing off, only to bring it face down on the lower half to make a little cake sandwich that I showed Harry who watched me intently with pierced, furrowed brows.

"See, so you can get the right amount of icing with every bite." I explained as he took the now sandwiched dessert in his hand with a slightly fascinated expression.

By the time we exited out of the building the cupcake was long gone and Harry had reached out to wipe a smear of icing from the corner of my lips with his thumb before casually bringing it to his lips, sucking the icing off his finger as we walked together.

I hugged myself, my small frame shivering slightly from the chill before Harry noticed and grabbed me, tugging me to him with one strong pull and enveloping me inside his thick, coat jacket, the heat of his body warming mine as I let out a small sigh at the warmth.

"Old lady." Harry chastized with a hint of amusement as I wrapped my arms around his toned waist while his slung around my shoulder to keep me to him, our feet stepping side by side in sync together.

"Old man." I countered back with a light laugh, giggling and trying to cover my face in his chest when he pinched my cheek with his large tattooed hand before something in the window of the book store we were passing caught my attention, making me stop immediatly in my tracks as Harry did the same, giving me a look.

He followed my captured gaze to the window before I ditched him in a rush, sprinting towards it and pressing my face against it, hypervenilating with wide eyes until the glass began to fog up.

"I'm assuming you know her." Harry joined my side with a questioning tone as we stared at the one, the only, Mariette Carter at a one and only book signing.

"She's the author of all my self help books, Friendship for Dummies, Relationship for Dummies, Sex for Dummies."

Harry's head snapped to me.

"What was the last one-"

"She's signing books and answering questions! I love her so much!" I squealed, pressing one half of my face against the window, my skin slightly stretching in a probably horrific manner as it stuck to the glass as I watched her sign her novels, handing them back to the neatly seated crowd of women around her.

"I love you...." I mouthed with wide eyes, even though she wasn't paying attention to the window as I gazed at her in complete awe, salt and peppered, fluffy short hair neatly tucked behind her ears with a warm, friendly grin on her face.

"Just go in." Harry said, nudging me with impatience as I made a face, too hesitant.

"And all the seats are taken." I pointed out with a carefree shrug, more than happy to just watch my idol from afar with lots of love before Harry suddenly grabbed me, lifting me up and effortlessly putting me over his shoulder as I hung upside down with wide eyes, not moving as I let him carry me inside, the tips of my brown hair grazing the floor slightly.

I couldn't see what he was doing as he kept one large tattooed hand over the back of my thigh to stable me on him while the whole bookstore quieted from his adrupt intrusion, making me raise my head slightly with curiousity before he went over to the side and grabbed something, dragging it as I heard the metal loudly scrape against the floor making me realize it was a chair.

All eyes from the rows of women on both of our sides stared at us, completely captured and stunned to silence by Harry's hard, attractively stern appearance while he carried me to the front of the room before stopping, kicking the chair he was dragging behind him with his free hand to spin and face the front before placing both of his hands on my hips and sitting me down on it.

And there, right in front of me, was my all time favorite author sitting at her table with wide eyes that seemed to mirror her fans while Harry stood behind my seat, crossing his arms over his chest with a straight face as I scrunched up and squealed in my chair, smiling at her.

"Hi! Hi! Hi I love you! I love you hi!" I breathed out, ecstatically waving my hand violently in the air waving at her even if she was only a few feet away as she raised a neatly plucked brow at me, glancing back at Harry who stayed silent behind me.

"Um, yes, hello." Marriette straightened, acknowledging my presence with a curt nod that made my little heart skip with joy while the women around us whispered, still enraptured with Harry who looked completely bored with this entire situation.

"I'm guessing you're a fan, yes?" She questioned with a knowing look as I enthusiastically nodded with wide eyes.

"I love you." I whispered.

I strived to be Marriette Carter.

To breathe the same air she breathed.

She was the one who helped me out with all the fundamentals of relationships.

"Yes, right. Well since you seem like an eager one, I was just asking everyone what makes them happy in their lives-"

"Oh I know! I know this one!" I quickly raised my hand, bringing my hand over my arm as if that would hold it higher while she blinked at me.

"Of course. Please enlighten us." Marriette said, giving me the floor as I bounced with excitement in my chair, making it squeak.

"Okay um... puppies make me happy, rainbows, Harry, free hugs, smiles, Harry, chocolates, laughter, clothes that just got out of the dryer, Harry-"

"You're saying Harry a lot, I'm guessing this is him yes?" She clarified, gesturing towards the Italian man behind me as I nodded, turning slightly to hug him and show him with pride like a beautiful artwork before I realized he was quickly heading for the door.

Knowing he was trying to run away from me, I quickly got up from my chair, chasing after him before he could reach the door, making him grunt as I grabbed the sleeve of his jacket, dragging him back as he followed with an irritated expression.

"Yes this is Harry. He makes me really happy." I smiled, hugging his side as he kept his arms limp with a straight face while the people around us stared in wonder.

"You two seem quite the opposite," Marriette observed with an intrigued expression, leaning forward in her seat as did the rest of the women around her followed, all eyes glued on us.

"Please, do tell of how you two met." She requested, folding her hands together as I blinked in thought, eyes wandering to the ceiling for a brief moment before looking back at her.

"None of your business." Harry snapped at her, making a chorus of gasps emanate around us as Marriette simply smiled.

"Very touchy." She observed with a subtle purse of her lips, accentuating the slight creases over her aging cheeks before she resting her chin over her intwined hands.

"Tell me," She smiled, now focusing her attention on me as I felt Harry's shoulders stiffen slightly with unease, a cold chill in the air as the whole atmosphere in the room changed.

"Malu, we need to go." He lowly spoke in a calm manner for only me to hear, reaching out and gripping my hand in his as I glanced up to find him glaring harshly at my favorite author.

"Would you do anything for this man?" Marriette questioned in a knowing voice, causing me to look around at everyone's collected, expectant faces as Harry squeezed my hand, his gaze flickering around the room, observing everyone around us.

I didn't answer her for she already knew what my response would be as satisfaction glimmered in her pale blue eyes.

"Tell me Malu, would you give up your emotions and the ability to see color for this man you love so dearly?" She finished, the chilling tone of her voice now resonating inside of me as memories of her younger face flashed before my eyes, her appearance so different from before over all these years before I quickly grabbed the gun from my holster, raising it and aiming at her in one motion.

Before I could even blink one of the women closest to me rose from her seat, pointing her own gun at me.

At that second Harry raised his silver gun as well and pointed it at the woman's head with no hesitation.

That was when the windows of the bookstore closed down with metal blinds, falling down over the glass and shutting us all inside where no onlookers could see us as the clangs echoed through the air.

In unison every person in their chair stood up, all taking out their weapons and aiming it at Harry and I as I kept my intense glare at Marriette who simply sat back in her chair with a calm expression throughout the whole ordeal.

With one more malevolent smile my way she retrieved her phone from her purse, bringing it to her red painted lips.

"This is Agent Two reporting," She spoke into the speaker, keeping her cold blue eyes on me as I kept my gun aimed at her, making her grin from ear to ear before she uttered the next three words into the device.

"We found her."
