Epilogue
I sorted everything out, making sure it was all perfect. I used the feather duster to brush away the bit of dust that I saw forming on the shelf. There was a chuckle from the doorway and I looked over at Frank watching me. He came over and wrapped his arms around me, looking down lovingly. His warm, hazel eyes helped to calm me down a bit but I was still worried.
"Babydoll, it's fine," Frank said.
I shook my head. "Do you know how many germs are in dust? I don't want my baby around all that, she could get sick. Oh my god, we need to completely clean the house, it has to be spotless."
"Princess, babies are a lot stronger than you think," Frank said.
"But what if we can't raise her correctly?" I worried. "What if she dies? What if she gets sick? What if she hates us?"
He caresses my cheek gently, giving me a soft kiss.
"Don't think about it too much, okay? You're going to make a wonderful dad," Frank said.
I smiled, resting my head against the chest. We were standing in the middle of the nursery, which was freshly painted light blue. There was a white crib against the wall and a white rug on the hardwood floor. There were toys and stuffies and other sorts of baby supplies. A dresser and a changing table was pressed against the wall opposite of the crib. There were little decorations all around like the butterfly wall stickers above the crib and the white curtains covering the window.
We were adopting a child together. It's been six years since Frank and I got married. I moved in with him just after I finished high school and we've been so happy ever since. About nine months ago we met a teenager in high school who had accidentally gotten pregnant. She didn't want to keep the baby so we are adopting the child. We went with her to all her appointments and paid for vitamins and everything. The baby was a girl, Frank and I were getting a little baby girl.
"Hey, you just need to relax," Frank whispered, kissing my cheek softly.
I giggled, wrapping my arms around his neck.
"I'm just nervous," I said. "I want everything to be perfect."
His phone started ringing suddenly. I jumped, the ringtone a lot louder than I had expected because Frank usually keeps it on silent. Frank looked at the caller and saw Sarah, the girl we were adopting the baby from.
"Gotta answer this," Frank said. "Maybe it's time."
I stood anxiously as I watched him talk on the phone. I bounced from foot to foot, a grin on my face.
"She's in labor," Frank said.
I gasped, pulling away from him quickly. I grabbed my bag and ran out to the car while Frank was quick on my tail. The two of us drove quickly, but the hospital was unfortunately a good half an hour away. I gave him a smile, leaning over to kiss his cheek.
"I can't believe that this is actually happening, it's actually time," I said.
He smiled as we drove quickly. We finally got to the hospital and found out what room she was in. When we got to the correct room, we found Sarah, who was clearly in pain, with a couple nurses who was trying to talk to her.
"Hey, Sarah," I said. "Just take a few deep breaths."
She nodded, holding tight onto my hand from the pain as I winced slightly.
"D-do you want me to go back there with you?" I asked.
She shook her head. "I-I wanna do it alone."
I nodded as a doctor came in and they carted her away. It seemed like hours that Frank and I sat in the waiting room. Anxiously sitting side by side as we worried. The baby was said to be healthy but what if the ultrasounds were wrong? We went with her to all the appointments, made sure she ate healthy and took necessary vitamins. But there was still the chance of something just going terribly wrong.
"Mr. and, uh, Mr. Iero-Way?" The doctor called.
We stood up immediately and hurried over.
"It's a beautifully healthy baby girl," he said and we sighed in relief. "7.6 pounds, 50.2 cm."
"Can we see her?" I asked.
He smiled and nodded as we followed him back. There was a room where Sarah was talking to one of the nurses and in the corner another nurse was taking the temperature of our baby, who was laying in a sort of plastic crib thing. We walked up and saw the head of short, dark hair that stuck up on all directions. Bright blue eyes looked up at us in curiosity as she cooed quietly. She looked so much like Sarah, not that I mind at all, Sarah is beautiful.
"C-can we hold her?" I asked.
The nurse smiled and nodded as I picked her up in my arms while she was wrapped in a little white blanket. She seemed so fragile and so small. Frank wrapped his arms around my middle from behind me, resting his chin on my shoulder. The nurse walked away to give us more privacy.
"She's beautiful," he whispered.
I gasped as I realized something, looking down at our beautiful daughter.
"We didn't think of a name, daddy!" I exclaimed in a hushed tone. "I can't believe we forgot!"
"What do you wanna name her, sweetheart?" Frank asked.
I looked down at the way she looked at us, a small, toothless smile spreading on her face.
"Hazel, I wanna name her Hazel."
