Chapter 17
Frank and I sat on my bedroom floor. I was sitting in his lap as the two of us labeled the clothes in my closet. I wrote 'pink' on the tag of a sweater. He kissed my cheek and I smiled happily. He wrote something onto the tag of a grey skirt, setting it into the finished pile.
"Hey, baby?" Frank asked.
I hummed in question, turning sideways in his lap to look at him better.
"You know my friend Brendon, the one who caught us last week?" He asked.
I nodded, worried that maybe Brendon wouldn't keep the promise of silence.
"Well, he's having a small party and I was wondering if you would be my date," Frank suggested.
I froze, looking at him worriedly. "But what about everyone else there? What if they tell Jamia?"
"Don't worry, it's not gonna be many people, just a small get together," Frank reassured. "All of my friends and they won't tell anyone. It's just Brendon and his boyfriend, Pete, and Ray. I just want to do something normal for once, something that normal couple do."
"They won't tell?" I asked.
He shook his head and smiled. I agreed and Frank looked even happier as he hugged me tight.
"Daddy?" I asked. "When are you gonna choose between Jamia and I?"
"Baby, I don't know," Frank muttered. "It's just confusing, okay?"
I nodded sadly and Frank gave me a soft kiss.
"Let's finish your clothes and then we can go watch cartoons," Frank suggested.
I felt myself perk up slightly as I nodded. We finished writing colors onto the tags of clothing, putting them all away and going upstairs to the tv. We were cuddling for an hour when Mikey came home, along with two of his friends. And, being the teenage boys they are, they were just loud and crazy.
"Can we have the tv?" Mikey asked.
"I'm using it," I stated.
"But you've been using it," Mikey complained. "We wanna play Black Ops."
He went and turned on his Xbox, switching the tv to show his game. I whined, looking at Frank sadly. I was in the middle of an episode that was really good. Frank patted my back as the teenagers clambered onto bean bags and the couch. They were immediately yelling and shouting when the first round of zombies started and it scared me a little.
"C'mon, let's go back to my house," Frank suggested.
I nodded and we got up and went out to his car. I still pouted, my arms crossed. As I was looking out the window, I felt a hand run through my hair soothingly. I looked over at him and couldn't help but smile at how cute he was. We got to the house and Sweet Pea immediately jumped at my feet. I reached down to pet her happily.
"You want ice cream?" Frank asked but he already knew the answer as he walked into the kitchen.
I smiled, following him and sitting on the counter. He went in between my legs, holding onto my hips. Frank kissed me and I quickly returned it happily. The kiss became more heated between us as his tongue slipped into my mouth. Frank moved to kiss down my neck, sucking on the pale skin.
"I'm home, daddy!" A voice called, the front door opening.
Frank jumped away so fast he ended up knocking over a stack of papers. I jumped off the counter, terrified of us finally being caught. Jamia walked into the kitchen, noticing me and immediately blushing when she realized she had called Frank daddy in front of me. Frank cleared his throat awkwardly.
"Wow, you're home early. Jamia, this is Gee," Frank introduced. "He's a...student. Yeah, just a student of mine. He needed extra help so he came over here."
Jamia smiled and nodded, waving at me. Frank and I were standing on opposite sides of the kitchen, afraid that if we were even a foot apart then she'd know. Sweet Pea came in from the other room, immediately at my feet again.
"That's weird," Jamia remarked. "She doesn't usually like going near new people."
"Oh, I-I have a cat," I lied. "She, uh, she must smell my cat on me."
Jamia shrugged, going over to Frank. Frank gave her a hug and kiss and I couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy.
"I've seen you around before," Jamia said to me. "Are you two close friends?"
"Well, I mean, yeah I guess you could say that," I agreed.
Her eyes brightened up and she reached into the fallen stack of papers. She held something out to me and I took it.
"You should come to our wedding," Jamia suggested.
I looked down at the wedding invitation, seeing that the wedding was in a week and a half. There is only eleven fucking days until Frank gets married.
"I know it's a little late for invitations but whatever," Jamia said. "Frankie, why didn't you invite him earlier?"
"I-I-I well, um, y-you see..." Frank looked like a deer in headlights as he trailed off.
Jamia giggled and looked at him in confusion.
"What's wrong?" She asked.
"Nothing, baby, nothing's wrong," he denied.
"Okay, well, I'll let you two work," Jamia said. "I'm gonna go take a shower."
Jamia gave Frank a kiss on the cheek and smiled. The two looked so happy together, like they were meant be. But I knew they weren't. But yet they looked so in love.
"I love you," she said.
"Love you too, sweetheart," Frank replied, kissing her forehead.
I could feel a lump in my throat as she smiled walked away. Neither of us moved until we heard the shower start running.
"Gee, I'm sorry, she came home early I didn't know," Frank apologized.
He put a hand on my shoulder but I jerked away from his touch.
"I think I should go," I muttered.
"I'm sorry," Frank repeated.
I nodded and Frank kissed my forehead gently.
"Hey, are we still able to go to Brendon's tomorrow?" He asked.
"Yeah, sure," I agreed distractedly as I tried my hardest not to cry.
"Let me drive you home at least, it's a bit chilly out," Frank insisted.
I shook my head. "I just...I just need to clear my head a bit."
I turned and walked out of the house, hearing Sweet Pea's barks of protest. I shoved the invitation into the pocket of my blue dress. However, it was just an ugly old grey to me without Frank. I wiped away a few stray tears that fell, trying to take a few deep breaths.
I heard a car pull up beside me and some men wolf whistled at me. I ignored them, looking straight ahead as I walked.
"Hey there, baby, why don't you hop in and we can give you a ride!" The driver called.
"A ride on my dick!" Someone in the backseat shouted.
Others laughed and I frowned.
"Don't be a pouter, baby, I know how to put a smile right on your face," the one in the passenger said. "And that'll be when I fuck you so hard you'll be loving every second of it."
I looked at them in disgust, just as someone stepped in between us.
"You leave him the fuck alone before I slit your fucking throats," the person threatened.
The car drove off, the three of them howling with laughter. Eliza turned to me with worry on her face.
"Are you okay, Gee?" Eliza asked.
"I'm fine," I muttered.
"You look sad, did those people make you sad?" She asked. "Don't worry, I won't let them hurt you."
"It's not about that," I said, walking down the sidewalk.
She caught up with me and walked beside me.
"What's wrong?" Eliza asked. "You can talk to me if you'd like."
I sighed, just needing to get everything off my chest.
"I don't think my soulmate and I are really meant to be," I admitted.
"Well, why not?" Eliza asked.
"There's just some stupid stuff getting in the way," I said.
"If it's stupid stuff then why is it such a big deal?" Eliza asked
"Because it is big and it's just so hard to have this relationship with him," I said. "I just don't even know what to do anymore."
"Well, and this is as unbiased as possible, if it's so hard for you then what's so good about you being together?" Eliza asked.
I looked at her and she looked back.
"But...he makes me happy," I said.
"Lots of things can make you happy, doesn't mean they're meant for you," Eliza said and I gave her a confused look. "Alcohol makes people happy, but that doesn't mean it's good. Abusive relationships can make people happy, doesn't mean is good. Drugs aren't good but they make people happy. Many things aren't good but they make people happy and people want to focus too much on the happy because the sadness is too painful to accept."
I looked down at my feet as we walked. I thought about her words as they echoed through my brain. I looked up and stopped when I saw we were in front of my house.
"I'm at my house now," I said.
"I know, " Eliza said.
I didn't question why she knew where I lived because I'm not surprised.
"So, uh, thank you," I said a little awkwardly. "For the men and for the advice."
"Of course, I would do anything for you," she said.
Eliza started to walk away but seemed to think for a moment. She turned, giving me a kiss on the cheek before walking off in her black jeans and black hoodie. I couldn't help but feel my cheeks warm up as I walked into the house. I went down to my bedroom, walking passed where my brother and his friends were still yelling at the television.
I laid back on my bed, staring up at the ceiling while thinking about what Eliza had said. Frank and I have good times together. But a good number of the times we're together ends with me in tears. It's all just heartbreak and struggle and keeping our relationship a secret. Yeah, Frank may make me happy, but is he really good for me?
