Chapter 2

I yawned widely an smiled as I woke up. Today felt like a great day. Nothing was different. I woke up to the exact same boring colorless ceiling as always.

I had the same ache in my back from my rock hard bed. My hair was in tangles, as usual. And I heard bustling around, as usual.

But something about today felt special. Like something great was going to happen. I smiled to myself, put on my usual dress and went downstairs.

My mother was making breakfast, while doing a thousand other things.

"Colors, could you get me the salt?" She asked, more like an order.

I walked over to our shelf and grabbed the salt.

I studied it for a second, then handed it to her.

"Mother, what color is salt?"

She kept working as she spoke. "What do you mean, dear? You have to stop asking such questions".

"I mean, what is it's color? I mean, I think color is very important."

She stopped and looked at me for a second, then went back to working.

"Well, it's not. It has nothing to do with anything. It's just something there.... because its there."

I was a little shocked. "But mother, I really don't think..."

"Colors! It doesn't matter what you think! Salt is colorless. And besides, as I said, color has nothing to do with anything."

"Kind of like me", I barely whispered. I quickly shook it off and smiled again.

"Colors, will you go see what's taking your brother so long? I sent him half an hour ago to get that water."

I nodded and skipped out the door. I was determined to have a wonderful day, and I knew nothing in the world could bring me down.

I walked to the river, but couldn't find my brother. I walked all around and still couldn't find him.

I saw something over behind a shed, so I walked over. But as soon as I neared it, it disappeared.

Then I heard a strange sound, like muffled speaking. I went around the other side of the shed. There was my brother, kissing some girl.

I gasped a little. He heard me and stopped and turned to me.

He smiled and blushed. So did the girl. She quickly scampered away.

"Colors, I'm guessing mother sent you. Right?"

I nodded. "Who was that?"

"Oh her? She's just my girl."

"Your girl?"

"Well yeah. Like someone that i like."

I sighed. I never really understood liking and loving. Being sixteen, I assumed i was too young to understand. And honestly, I wasn't too interested anyway.

I grabbed his arm and he grabbed his bucket. We walked home together.

My mom scowled when we walked in.

"Where have you been?" She asked, gesturing to my brother.

"With his girl", I said, smiling.

My mom held back a small smile. "That will have to wait. You must get your chores done before any of that."

We did our chores and sat down for breakfast. Afterwards, we cleaned up . Then my brother left again.

"Mother, I'm going out", I said, walking out.

"Fine. Be back soon."

"Sure."

I walked around the village for a while, until I grew bored. I headed through the thick forest.

I stopped every once in a while to rest, then I would start right back up again.

Until, I passed over a rock. Then I saw something I would never ever forget.
