twenty-four

When he finally found her, he wasn't surprised. She was standing at the edge of the astronomy tower, the wind blowing her hair back. He figured that this was where she would go. It seemed to be one of her favorite spots. He stood in the door for a second, admiring her profile. The way her lips barely touched, how plump they were. They way her straightened hair blew in the wind, slowly losing the straightness and going back to the wild waves he knew and loved. The way her nose wasn't too big or small, but perfect for her small face and frame. The way her green eyes scanned the grounds, most likely focusing on the Black Lake. He simply couldn't get enough of her.

He walked over to the edge with her and turned to face her. When she said nothing, he looked out across the ground. Out of the corner of her eye she saw how the wind blew his hair back and how his lips were slightly parted. She loved how his tie was hardly ever tied properly, how he always left the top button of his shirt undone, and how he rolled his sleeves up. He's gorgeous... She couldn't help but think. She couldn't blame any of the girls who fell for him; he was undeniably handsome and charming. Hell, I'm one of those girls, she thought. She had accepted it awhile ago- that she had fallen quickly and hard for the stormy-eyed, long-haired young man that Sirius Black had grown into.

Both remembered the night they both sought refuge here and Sirius confessed things to her that he hadn't told anyone else. The night that something changed between them, and Savannah found him less of an insufferable prat. Sirius just fell even more for her after she told him that she knew he was nothing like his own horrible parents. Recalling how she looked in the moonlight, he couldn't decide if she looked better with the sun's rays on her or the moon's glow. She was stunning either way.

"You knew?" She finally whispered without looking at him. Instead she focused on the reflection of the sunlight off of the Black Lake and how the trees' branches swayed in the breeze. She enjoyed the feeling of the wind on her face, brushing her hair back gently. It was mid-March, so there was still a bit of chill in the air, but nothing terrible.

"You know how I feel about you. You know I want us to be together. It wasn't until you casted your Patronus earlier in class that I knew we were truly soulmates," he told her softly, resisting the urge to reach out and brush a lock of hair from her face. He shifted slightly, leaning more against the railing.

She laughed humorlessly. "I guess it always has been you, hasn't it?" Quoting her words from the night she resolved to 'fix' herself.

"Please, 'Vannah, quit fighting it. You're perfect how you are. Just... just please be mine," he whispered, slowly inching his way closer to her, unable to resist the need to be close to her anymore.

She snorted. "You won't be saying that when we get in screaming matches over my jealousy or self-hatred. Or when you have to stay up with me all night calming me down after a nightmare. You won't say that when I flinch when you touch me after a particularly nasty memory runs through my head. You'll end up hating me when you feel trapped, when you feel obligated to stay and care for me. I'm trying to set things right in my mind... so that I can prevent those things and be who you need me to be, Sirius. My parents really fucked me up. You don't know what they put me through, Sirius," her voice cracked as a tear streamed down her face, even though she tried not to let it fall.

"So let me in, Savannah. Let me be who you need," he pleaded with her, turning to face her again. He longed to take away all her pain. He had never felt more helpless than he did then, looking at her face and seeing the pain etched on her features, and yet not being able to do anything about it. If he could, he would gladly take on all of her pain if it meant she wouldn't feel it.

She was silent for a moment. "I've been talking more. I've been going out more. I've been telling Lily things, getting them off my chest. I've made so much good progress, Sirius. I've cleaned myself up. I'm getting there Sirius, just... give me more time."

He finally reached out timidly and turned her towards him. Stepping closer, he gently lifted her chin up. He ran a finger over her cheek, his eyes staring into hers. She was frozen in place, her heart aching for her to kiss him. She so desperately wanted to. She noticed his gorgeous stormy eyes flicker down to her lips and she knew what he was going to do next. The funny thing was, no single part of her wanted to stop him. Earlier in the school year, she detested him and now here she was, wanting nothing more than to feel his lips on hers. A year ago, if someone had told her she would be in this position, wanting to kiss Sirius and make herself better for him, she would have laughed in their face. He was still holding her chin gently when he leaned in and captured her lips in a gentle, innocent kiss. It wasn't a particularly long, nor deep kiss. Yet somehow there was such passion in it that it made Savannah's knees go weak. To help support herself, she wrapped her arms around his neck. Each tried to convey to the other just how much they wanted and needed each other. In Savannah's opinion, it was the perfect first kiss she could ask for. Her body felt like it was on fire, and she found herself not wanting to stop.

When he pulled away, both kept their eyes closed for a moment, processing what just happened. He loved the way her touch made his heart flutter and how it sent fireworks up and down his body. No other girl had ever affected him the way Savannah was.

Finally he whispered, "I'll be here when you're ready," before letting his hand fall. He backed away and left her alone with her thoughts at the top of the astronomy tower.

There has to be something good about me for Sirius to see... I can't be all bad... I'm not like my parents... I can't let them win. I have to beat this, her mind raced as she looked out at the grounds, thankful that Defense was their last class of the day. Sliding down the wall, she pulled out her wand and summoned one of her muggle books, called Treasure Island, so that she could read and clear her head. Reading had always relaxed her, even from day one.

My parents have not won. I will prove that I am good and that I can be who Sirius needs me to be, she thought before she lost herself in the book, leaving all her anxieties and stress behind.
