I don't know why I do this every year, Savannah thought as she sat on the bleachers of the quidditch pitch, watching Dalton try out.
Every year, the captain makes everyone try out again. Everyone nearly always makes it on the team again. It was rather pointless, but it was the captain's prerogative, Savannah supposed.
Savannah groaned internally and she shivered. It was an unusually cold day for the second week of September, as the sun wasn't out and there was a strong breeze. She supposed she was quite the sight in her oversized Stone quidditch sweatshirt, which was pulled over her knees as she hugged them to her chest. Her Gryffindor hat was pulled down over her ears, enough to nearly cover her eyes. Her scarf was draped around her neck, twisted around so many times that her nose barely poked out. She had traded in her usual Vans for some boots in an effort to keep warm.
I could be inside reading, but no Dalton insists on being a jock every year, Savannah mentally cursed Dalton as she shivered.
Savannah refused to acknowledge that fact that her gaze floated to Sirius every once in awhile. She refused to accept that something had changed between them since that night last week.
Savannah mentally cheered every time Dalton hit the bludger with scary accuracy. No one besides Dalton knew how much she adored quidditch. She could tell you anything about her favorite team, The Chudley Cannons. Ever since she had come to Hogwarts, the game had fascinated her and she loved learning about it, as well as watching it. She wouldn't mind watching Dalton try out every year if it wasn't so bloody cold.
"Hey, Sava," Remus Lupin greeted as he sat down beside her, clad in a nice muggle jacket and jeans.
"Hey, Rem," Savannah responded, not moving since her position was finally starting to warm her up.
"Cold?" He laughed, raising an eyebrow.
She glared at him. "Nooo, what ever could have given you that idea?" She asked sarcastically with an eye roll.
Remus laughed at her sarcasm. "It is cold. Feels more like October or November than September."
Savannah nodded, shivering.
Remus knew Savannah. He always seemed to know when she didn't want to talk, which was quite often. While they weren't close, Savannah and Remus both got the impression that they could call each other a friend. Savannah was personally glad that Remus never teased her, never bullied her. He was one person at Hogwarts who wasn't terrible.
So Remus Lupin and Savannah Stone sat on the freezing bleachers, watching everyone try out.
Savannah didn't want to admit it, but Sirius Black was part of the reason she came this year. She would've come for Dalton alone- as she had each of the five years before- but she wanted to see Sirius play too. At
Remus came to give Savannah company, but he also wanted to see three of his four friends try out. He wasn't obsessed with quidditch, but he still wanted to support his friends. They supported him with his furry little problem, so it was really the least he could do.
Sirius Black tried his best to ignore the feeling of jealousy that welled up in his chest when he seen Remus join Savannah. He instead focused all of his energy on hitting those bludgers as hard as possible.
James noticed Remus sitting beside Savannah, so it wasn't hard to tell why Sirius was hitting those bludgers so hard. He was racing across the pitch on his broom, trying his best to get as many goals as possible.
Dalton was still oblivious to Sirius's obvious crush on his sister, which was honestly probably a good thing. Dalton was extremely protective over Savannah, and he knew Sirius's reputation as a player. He loved Sirius like a brother, but he didn't want anyone breaking his already broken sister even more.
The captain, some seventh year named Olly Wood, announced that all of the previous year's players were still on the team. Those players, James, Sirius, and Dalton included, landed and went over to Wood. They discussed the new players, as they needed a new Chaser, reserve Beaters, and a reserve Keeper. They decided on a fifth year named Patil for the reserve Keeper, a sixth year named Bell for one reserve Beater, a second year named Johnson for the other reserve Beater, and a third year named Brown as the new Chaser.
Savannah was insanely happy when the players began dispersing, signaling the end of the tryouts. She moved, still shivering, and waddled like a penguin back to the castle. Remus followed her, laughing at her coldness.
As soon as she entered the castle, she stood there, relishing in the warmth for a moment. Remus smirked slightly at the look of bliss on her face.
"I'll see you at supper, yeah?" Remus asked, his hands in his pockets.
"Yeah," Savannah responded, finally tugging off her scarf as she walked to the Great Hall slowly. She was still too cold to walk normally. Somehow, she managed to get cold extremely easy when it came to being outside. If she was inside, however, it was quite easy for her to get hot.
Remus left her side to go to the Gryffindor common room to wait on James, Sirius, and Dalton. He waited with Peter, who was very eager to get to supper.
Savannah sat at her usual spot at the end of the Gryffindor table once she got to the Great Hall. She shrieked when she suddenly felt someone pulling her by her hood down the bench.
"Relax, Sava, it's just me!" Marlene laughed as she stopped pulling Savannah and sat down beside her.
Savannah was still stiff, but she did relax slightly when she seen that it was her new friends. Alice and Lily joined them not too long later, followed by the Marauders, Dalton included. Savannah thought it was quite odd, how her brother was an included Marauder. He even had a nickname, Savannah noticed. She fought back a snicker when she would hear the others call him "Paws."
She also noticed that he, along with the others, always seemed exhausted and occasionally injured once a month. She didn't pursue it because she figured that if her brother didn't tell her about it, then he didn't want her to know. They told each other nearly everything, but Savannah understood the need for a secret or two.
Savannah was quiet, as usual. She did pitch into the conversation the other girls were having every once in awhile, but she was content to sit and listen.
Always listen, Savannah, Savannah heard her parents' voices echo in her head.
Sirius kept sneaking glances at Savannah, which Lily and Marlene didn't fail to notice. If Savannah did notice, she gave no indication that she did. Alice was sitting, unaware as she babbled on and on about how fantastic her boyfriend Frank was. Lily and Marlene were smirking, sending Sirius knowing looks.
Sirius was a bit surprised to get them from Marlene, since she was obsessed with him in their third year. Hmmm. Guess she finally moved on. Thank Merlin, Sirius thought.
The boys were talking about future pranks. Remus told James that he should go a whole supper without asking Lily out. James was getting desperate- they were already in their sixth year!- so he actually listened to Moony for once.
Savannah sat through supper with a small smile on her face. She was actually being included in someone's friend group! She was having a hard time believing it. The girls were being girls, not tiptoeing around her or anything! They talked about boys, muggle things, shopping, everything that was pretty much foreign to Savannah. She was quite surprised at how much she enjoyed being included.
So this is what it feels like, huh, not being completely antisocial.
