Chapter 12

Hello! How are you all doing? Staying safe and healthy? I hope you're all doing well and if you're having a bad day, well I hope this chapter brings you some joy. I don't have much to say, so let's get into it.

"I went back to that dog cafe yesterday and Kkami was gone! He's already been adopted," Hyunjin exclaims, "Can you believe it!?"

Jisung nods, "You did say that he probably would be sooner than later."

"I know, I just didn't think it would be that fast!" Hyunjin says with a pout.

Jisung sighs, "Who knows, maybe you'll get the chance to see him again..."

Hyunjin huffs, "It wouldn't be the same. He would be someone else's dog..." Jisung looks over at the boy and nudges him. "Don't be too bummed out," Jisung says, "Trust me when I say things will turn out in a way you never expect."

"What's that supposed to mean?" Hyunjin asks.

Jisung shrugs, "You'll find out, princess." Hyunjin shakes his head and leans against the trunk of the tree that he and Jisung sit beneath. School had ended a couple of hours ago and the two had decided to hang out at the park for a bit. The two boys have been spending a lot more time with one another the past few weeks. Hyunjin is proud to say that Jisung is his friend and a good one at that. Although he still retained his annoying tendencies, Jisung got along really well with Hyunjin. The two just clicked. Hyunjin knows he can trust Jisung and the same could be said about the other. They told each other a lot considering they had just met. It was honestly like in kindergarten, where you meet someone and tell them all your secrets because you know that they'll be your best friend for life. Hyunjin doesn't know if he feels that way about Jisung, but he definitely trusts him. He understands him in a way that not many others do. When he's with Jisung, he just feels happy. And he likes to think it's the same way with him for Jisung. The two have been very open with one another, speaking about how Jisung's parents both were out of the picture due to some issues with the law and Hyunjin's panic attacks caused by memories of the time he was kidnapped. It only served to bring the two closer together. Hyunjin never had a friend outside of the gang before and it's nice to have someone to confide in during the day. "Hey," Hyunjin says.

Jisung looks over at him, "What?"

"Can I tell you a secret?" Hyunjin asks.

Jisung nods, "Another one? How many secrets do you have, princess? I thought at this point we had opened up completely to each other."

"You have more secrets too. Even if we're friends, we're not obligated to tell each other everything," Hyunjin says, "Not to mention, if I did tell you everything, I'm a hundred percent sure I would be teased to no end."

"You always think so badly of me," Jisung states, "I wouldn't tease you."

Hyunjin raises his eyebrow and Jisung sighs, "Fine. I would tease you if it was something like you keep a night light on before going to bed."

"Well, lucky for me, it's not that," Hyunjin says, "I'm part of a gang." Jisung doesn't say anything and Hyunjin shifts a little, wondering if he maybe shouldn't have brought this up. "Not just some small gang either. The biggest biker gang in South Korea. Have you heard of Moonlight? That's the gang I'm in," Hyunjin rambles. Jisung still doesn't say anything and Hyunjin frowns. "Jisung?" Hyunjin questions, "Aren't you going to say anything? Are you surprised or something?"

Jisung shakes his head, "Princess, I'm not stupid. I already know all of this."

"What!?" Hyunjin exclaims.

Jisung shrugs, "Well, I didn't know that you were in Moonlight, but I kinda assumed you were in some gang, anyway other than that I knew everything else."

"How?" Hyunjin asks.

"Uh, duh," Jisung says, "Why else would you have been at that dock that day while two gangs were fighting unless you were a part of one of those gangs?"

"But..." Hyunjin mutters.

Jisung sighs, "As I said before, I'm not stupid."

"You look stupid," Hyunjin huffs.

Jisung nudges him, "Harsh princess..." Hyunjin sighs, wondering if he wasn't being discreet enough. Jisung discovered he was a gang member pretty fast. If he was able to do it, couldn't anyone else do it? Could people in his school already know? Could Kijoon know?! This is why he always insisted on appearing weak in school, so they could never put two and two together. But, Jisung figured it out, does that mean someone else could too. "I won't say anything," Jisung says, "I thought you trust me."

"I do. I'm just worried. I mean, you figured it out so easily. That means anyone else could too!" Hyunjin exclaims.

Jisung shakes his head, "No one else will figure it out. You hide pretty well. I finally understand why you always insist on letting Kijoon pick on you. It makes you look helpless and nothing like a gang member."

"It didn't work for you," Hyunjin says, "You figured it out."

"Gangsters can recognize other gangsters," Jisung says, "That's the only reason I noticed. I mean why else would I have been there that night. People don't just hang around at old docks in the middle of the night."

"I...wait, what?" Hyunjin questions.

Jisung sighs, "Must I spell it out for you, princess...I'm in a gang too." Hyunjin blinks, not expecting for the other to say that. It does make sense though. He doesn't understand why he hadn't put it together sooner. The fact that Jisung was there that night and was able to save him and patch him up. The fact that he took down Kijoon without a second thought. His motorcycle. All of it added up to Jisung being a gang member. "Which gang?" Hyunjin asks.

Jisung smirks, "Guess?"

Hyunjin's nose wrinkles and he groans, "You're so annoying. Can't you just tell me?"

"Where's the fun in that?" Jisung asks. Hyunjin hits the boy, who flashes him a shocked look. "Don't be like that. You deserve it for being annoying," Hyunjin says.

"Whatever," Jisung says, "I'm still not telling you."

"Why!?" Hyunjin whines.

"Stop that princess. You know crying won't get you anything," Jisung tuts. Hyunjin huffs and he crosses his arms. Jisung smiles at his expression and pokes the other. Hyunjin shifts away, a bit butt hurt that the other won't tell him what gang he's from, especially after he told him. Jisung sighs, "Thank you for sharing your secret with me and trusting me to know about your other life." Hyunjin turns back and looks at Jisung, who has a small smile on his face. Hyunjin sighs, not understanding why he couldn't stay upset with the boy. "Thank you for trusting me too," Hyunjin murmurs. Jisung nods and leans back onto the tree. He tilts his head up and takes a deep breath. His eyes fall shut as the sun touches his face. Hyunjin looks at him, not saying anything. "Why are you staring, princess?" Jisung murmurs.

Hyunjin tilts his head down and coughs, "No, I'm not."

"I know I'm handsome, princess, but there's no need to stare," Jisung says with a smirk. Hyunjin slaps Jisung and the boy shouts in surprise. Hyunjin snickers at Jisung's expression. Just then, Jisung's phone buzzes. The boy reaches for his phone and looks at the screen. "Hey, do you want to meet my...uh...I guess my guardians," Jisung asks, getting to his feet. The boy sticks his hand out and Hyunjin takes it. Jisung helps him get to his feet and Hyunjin brushes his pants off. "Your guardians?" Hyunjin questions.

Jisung nods, "They came to pick me up." Hyunjin nods as Jisung starts walking towards the sidewalk. They make their way to the parking lot where two men are standing in front of a black car. Hyunjin looks at the two men and he stops, surprised that he recognizes them. Jisung walks over and turns to face his friend, "Hyunjin, this is Jaebum and Jinyoung. My guardians."

Hyunjin blinks and walks closer, "Hi."

"Hello, Hyunjin," Jinyoung says, "I didn't know that you were the new friend that Jisung made."

"Uh, yeah," Hyunjin says, scratching the back of his neck, "I didn't know that you were Jisung's um guardians..."

"You know each other?" Jisung asks, looking from the couple to Hyunjin.

Jaebum nods, "We spoke to him the other day. His parents are old friends of ours."

"Wow, small world," Jisung comments. Hyunjin nods. It really is a coincidence that his parents' old friends have a kid that's friends with him. "How have you been, Hyunjin?" Jinyoung asks.

Hyunjin smiles, "I've been alright. How have you two been?"

"Good," Jaebum says, "What about your parents?"

"They're well," Hyunjin answers. This whole situation is awkward for him. He doesn't really know what to say. Jaebum and Jinyoung seem like a nice couple, but there's something weird about them. Hyunjin just feels something off with the two. Or maybe, he's just being paranoid. His parents always told him to be wary of strangers, but these two weren't really strangers. They were his parents' old friends and Jisung's guardians. "Have you remembered anything recently?" Jinyoung asks.

Hyunjin brow furrows, "Remembered?"

"Oh, we spoke about your birth family last time. I was just wondering if maybe you recalled anything about them," Jinyoung states.

"Uh, no, it was a long time ago," Hyunjin says, "And I was injured when my parents found me so, my memories about my birth family aren't all there...." Hyunjin shifts uncomfortably, finding it weird that this couple continues to ask about his family. A family that Hyunjin doesn't remember at all. He has no idea who they may be. His appa and dad have told him about how they searched, but came up with nothing. All he knows from his past is that he was found injured in an alleyway. He has no idea how he got there, but that's where his parents found him. "Hm, I'm sure it'll come back to you," Jinyoung says.

Hyunjin nods, "Uh, yeah, maybe..." Jisung looks at Hyunjin, who looks very distressed. He looks at Jinyoung and Jaebum, whose eyes have not moved from the young boy. Jisung lips purse, trying to decide what to do. Hyunjin is his friend, but if he were to do something he's a hundred percent sure his bosses would kill him. Maybe, it's better to just watch. "We should all get dinner together sometime," Jaebum says, "It's been awhile since we've seen Namjoon and Jimin. It would be great to catch up."

"Yes, that would be great," Jinyoung says, "You and Jisung could hang out while we catch up with your parents. How does that sound?"

"Um, yeah, I'll talk to my parents," Hyunjin says, "I'm sure they'll love to talk to you guys again."

"That's great," Jaebum says with a smile, "Well, we need to get going. It was nice talking to you. Let us know about that dinner thing, c'mon Jisung." Jisung waves to Hyunjin before opening the car door and getting inside. Jaebum and Jinyoung do the same. Hyunjin watches as the car drives off. Jisung stares at the boy as they drive away. "Why did you come?" Jisung asks, "This wasn't part of the plan. I was supposed to get him to trust me. I needed more time to do that than a couple weeks..."

"The plan has changed," Jinyoung states, "We're moving on faster."

"Hyunjin looks like he trusted you enough," Jaebum says, "From what you've reported, he's already told you a lot."

"Yeah, but still. I think he finds something off about you two," Jisung states.

"As I said before, the plan is going to be moving forward at a faster pace," Jinyoung says, "It doesn't matter what he thinks. We'll be moving on to the next phase soon." Jisung frowns, not agreeing, but keeping his mouth shut. "Did Hyunjin ever mention-," Jaebum starts to say

"No!" Jisung exclaims, cutting the other off, "Not even once. That's why I needed more time to get him to trust me! He would have told me! You shouldn't have just moved forward with the plan just cause you're anxious to get your hands on that stupid-,"

"Han Jisung!!!" Jaebum shouts. Jisung stiffens and glances up at the rear view mirror, where Jaebum is glaring at him with a murderous look. The boy shrinks in on himself and lowers his head in shame. "I-I'm sorry..." Jisung mutters.

"Don't overstep," Jaebum seethes, "You know what happens if you do."

◇─◇──◇────◇────◇────◇────◇────◇─────◇──◇─◇

"Hyunjin! We're home!" Namjoon shouts as he walks into the house with Jimin by his side.

"I'm in the kitchen!" Hyunjin exclaims. The couple makes their way over to where their son is leaning against the counter chewing on some chips. "How was work?" Hyunjin asks.

"Good," Jimin answers, "That new group is preparing for their debut."

"That's cool," Hyunjin says, "Oh, by the way, Jaebum-ssi and Jinyoung-ssi want to have dinner with us one day." Namjoon and Jimin tense and look at Hyunjin, who blinks in confusion. "They spoke to you again?" Namjoon asks.

Hyunjin nods, "I was hanging out with Jisung after school today and it turns out that they're his guardians. We talked a bit and they want to have dinner together."

"Jisung? As in that boy you became friends with?" Jimin asks.

"Yup, that's him. It's a coincidence that his guardians are your old friends, isn't it? Hyunjin says, "Who would've thought?"

"Hyunjin, I want you to stay away from those two," Namjoon says, "If they ever approach you again, I want you to turn the other way."

"What, why?" Hyunjin asks, "They're your old friends."

"Just listen to your dad," Jimin says in a dark tone, "Don't speak to them. Don't interact with them in any way."

"Okay, okay," Hyunjin says, not understanding why his parents are acting this way about old friends, "You don't have to be so serious about it. Take a deep breath."

"I want you to stay away from this Jisung kid too," Namjoon says, "If his guardians are Jaebum and Jinyoung, he can't be trusted."

Hyunjin brow furrows, "What? You want me to stop hanging out with Jisung?"

"It's for the best," Jimin says, "We don't know what he wants..."

"He doesn't want anything. He's my friend," Hyunjin shakes his head.

"Just listen to what we're saying and stay away from him," Namjoon says.

"Why? Jisung's never done anything wrong. You haven't even met him," Hyunjin says.

Jimin frowns, "The fact that he's connected to Jaebum and Jinyoung are reason enough."

"What's that supposed to mean?" Hyunjin says, "Why do you keep talking about them like they did something? Who are they? What happened between you guys?"

"Nothing," Namjoon says, "It's better that you don't know."

"If you don't tell me, you can't just expect me to stay away from them," Hyunjin exclaims, "Especially Jisung, he's been nothing but a good person to me."

"We expect you to listen to what we say because we're your parents," Jimin states.

"You're my parents, but that doesn't mean you get to dictate who and who I'm not friends with!" Hyunjin says, "I'm not five. I'm seventeen years old. I can make my own friends and hang out with whoever I want."

"Not when we tell you that you can't," Namjoon says, his hands clenched into fists.

"You can't just tell me not to when you won't give me a reason why!" Hyunjin fires back, "You keep saying I can't trust him, but why? Why can't I trust him? It has something to do with Jaebum and Jinyoung, right? What is it? Why won't you tell me?!"

"We don't need to tell you anything," Jimin says in an oddly calm tone, "You just need to listen."

"Why do you keep saying that? Why do you keep avoiding my questions!?" Hyunjin fires question after question, "Why won't you tell me the truth?"

"Because, there's somethings that you don't need to know," Namjoon states.

"I think I deserve to know!" Hyunjin says, "This has to do with me and my friend."

"Jisung is not your friend," Jimin says with gritted teeth.

Hyunjin scoffs, "How would you know that? How could you say that?"

"Jisung can't be trusted. I'm sure that Jaebum and Jinyoung are just using him for some reason," Jimin reasons.

"That's ridiculous. You're just being paranoid," Hyunjin states, "Jisung isn't a bad person. And why would Jaebum and Jinyoung even use him? What aren't you telling me?"

"Hyunjin. Just stay away from all three of them. This isn't up for debate," Namjoon says in a firm tone.

Hyunjin huffs, "Do you expect me to just go along with what you say!? I can't do that when you won't tell me why. Do you know why I'm so upset? You're asking me to stay away from Jisung. He's the only friend I've ever made outside of the gang. He's the only person who talks to me for me and not just so they could get something because I'm your son! He's the only one that's made my life outside of Moonlight not a horror show. Ever since I've become his friend, I've wanted to go to school! Before, I went cause I had to, but I dreaded it. My real life outside of the gang never felt right. I felt like a stranger walking in this town, but with Jisung it gave me something to look forward to! He made my life outside the gang not seem so bad. He never asks me for things or takes photos just to brag to his followers. He didn't stare at me when we first met. He stops people from doing things like that. If paparazzi sees me, he protects me from them. He makes me feel normal. Like I can just have a friend. Like I can just walk around and be me. That's how much Jisung means to me. That's why you asking me to ditch him hurts. I finally have a friend that actually wants to be my friend! Someone who sees me for me and likes the me that he saw. How can you take that from me? How can you ask me to give that up? How can you do that when you don't know Jisung? Don't you understand how much he means to me!?"

"You only met him a couple of weeks ago," Jimin states, "You can't trust so blindly."

"He's never given me a reason not to trust him," Hyunjin says, "And maybe one day he will, but I highly doubt it..."

"He'll only hurt you," Jimin says, looking at his son. The man reaches over to grab the hand of his child, but Hyunjin pulls his hands away. Hyunjin shakes his head, "You don't know him. He won't. I'm going to keep talking to Jisung. I'm going to keep being his friend. You can't stop me from doing that." The room falls silent as the parents and son stare at one another. The air is tense and the only sounds come from another room where the housekeeper is vacuuming. Hyunjin's heart clenches in his chest, upset that he's arguing with his parents about this. He doesn't want to fight with them, but they're asking him to do something that he just can't do. Jisung is his friend, he can't just start ignoring him. It hurts him to just think about it. Jimin and Namjoon share a quick look, worry still filling their bodies. Their son has always been stubborn, something that he seems to have picked up from Yoongi. They know they're asking a lot, but it's all for a good reason. They just want to keep Hyunjin safe, at least until they find out what the Evermore leaders are really planning. "Go to your room," Namjoon states, breaking the silence, "I told you before that this wasn't up for debate. You won't talk to Jisung and until you come to your senses and realize why you should listen to us, you will stay in that room. Am I clear?" Hyunjin shakes his head and turns to walk away. He stomps to his room and slams the door behind him. The parents stare at Hyunjin's room for a second, a mix of regret and sadness stemming from them both. Jimin looks to Namjoon, who has a distressed look on his face. "Why do they keep approaching him?" Namjoon mutters.

"I don't know," Jimin says.

Namjoon crosses his arm, "Who is this Jisung kid?"

"I don't know, but I'm sure that he's just a tool for Jaebum and Jinyoung to use to get closer to Hyunjin," Jimin says.

"What if he isn't?" Namjoon asks, "We asked him to stop being friends with someone."

"We did what we had to," Jimin says, "It's better to be cautious. The people that you think are your friends could end up being like Jaebum and Jinyoung..." Namjoon nods his head and runs his hand through his hair. "Has the guy trailing Hyunjin found out anything?" Namjoon mutters.

Jimin shakes his head, "Nothing."

Namjoon grimaces, "Maybe, we should have our men do some digging into Jinyoung and Jaebum. And that kid too..."

Jimin nods, "Good idea. I'll send out an order now."

◇─◇──◇────◇────◇────◇────◇────◇─────◇──◇─◇

Hyunjin lays on his bed, staring at the ceiling. His phone lays on his chest, ringing loudly throughout his room. "Hello?" Jisung asks through the phone.

"Hey," Hyunjin murmurs.

"What's wrong?" Jisung asks.

"How do you know something's wrong?" Hyunjin asks back.

"You never sound like that unless something's wrong," Jisung says, "And you never call me either. What's up?"

"I got into an argument with my parents," Hyunjin says.

"Why?" Jisung questions.

Hyunjin sighs, "They want me to stop being friends with you."

"What? Why?" Jisung asks.

"Cause your guardians are Jaebum and Jinyoung. I don't get why. I can only assume it's cause something happened between them," Hyunjin explains, "They won't tell me."

"Your parents do know that I'm not them, right?" Jisung says.

Hyunjin huffs, "I don't know..."

"What are you going to do?" Jisung asks.

"I'm not going to stop being your friend," Hyunjin states.

"Are you sure?" Jisung says, "I don't want to be the reason that you and your parents feud or something..."

"It's fine," Hyunjin says, grabbing his phone and sitting up, "I can't just stop hanging out with you cause of my parents' silly hunch. You're a good person, Jisung. I know that for sure. And if Jaebum and Jinyoung are a part of your life, I'm sure they're good people too. My parents are just overreacting."

"Hyunjin..." Jisung mutters, "I don't want you to make a decision like this that you'll regret..."

"Why would I regret this?" Hyunjin says, "I trust you, Han Jisung." The room falls into silence as Jisung doesn't answer. Hyunjin stares at his phone and taps it, making sure the call didn't get disconnected or something. "Jisung?" Hyunjin questions, "Are you still there?"

"Uh...yeah...I...um...okay, if that's what you want," Jisung says in a quieter tone, "I've got to go. If you need anything else, text me."

"Thanks for listening," Hyunjin says.

"Of course," Jisung says, "I'll see you tomorrow at school."

"Bye," Hyunjin says.

◇─◇──◇────◇────◇────◇────◇────◇─────◇──◇─◇

"Bye," Jisung says back, before hanging up the phone. He grips it in his hands and turns to face Jaebum and Jinyoung. "See, the plan is progressing just fine even after we have sped it up," Jinyoung says, "You were worried for nothing."

"Keep doing what you're doing," Jaebum says, "Remember what your role is here, Han. I shouldn't have to raise my voice at you like that again. Just do as you're told."

"Yes, sir," Jisung states as his bosses leave his private room. The boy sighs and walks over to his window where the sky is painted orange as the sun lowers. His chest feels funny after speaking with Hyunjin. This whole situation doesn't sit right with him. He shakes his head, thinking back to what his boss said. He has to do as he's told. Nothing more, nothing less. He pushes that feeling down, but it slowly creeps back up as he stares at the phone in his hand. "You shouldn't trust me, Hyunjin," Jisung murmurs to himself.
