Rewrite the Stars Part 1

This is a Devnessa story I was inspired by "Rewrite the Stars" sung by Zac Efron and Zendaya if you wanna check it out up top! This was also suggested by ShaahzweenyEldiablo so thank you again! Okay anyways this will be a mix of a lot of things; love, hurt and comfort. I hope you enjoy!

About the song, I recommend to either play it before or after reading the short story. I don't want ya'll to get confused while your reading but if you WANT TO listen to it while you read go right ahead! That's just my preference! Anyways lets get started!

Collins: 23 years old

Devan: 21 years old

Veronica and Vanessa: 23 years old

Setting: a Park downtown
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Devan ran as fast as he could. He didn't know where he was going, but anywhere he could just escape. His lungs were burning, his joints were locking up, he felt so weak. So the young boy stopped in his tracks, heaving to catch his breath. How long was he running for? He didn't remember. Tears began to sprit up into existence. No way of ceasing the moment, they glistened down his cheeks, he fell back into the grass behind him and cried out. How could this happen?
Devan felt himself feel excited for the day. His heart thumped against his chest as he walked with his brother, Collins Key towards his jeep. The older one saw the boy look enthused and asked with a raise of an eyebrow, "What are you so excited for?" The other one just shook his head, keeping his good mood, "Nothing." Collins just shrugged with a laugh as they hopped in the vehicle.
They rode in the car and Devan couldn't help but smile the whole way. He was finally gonna do it. Something that he's been dying to keep inside was going to be said. He was going to go for it. Collins looked over at his brother, questioning why he's so excited. All they were doing was going to visit his girlfriend Veronica and her sister Vanessa. What was so special about that to the young key? He continued to push his thoughts away and drive.
Finally, the Key brothers arrived to the destination, a park downtown. Collins and Devan hopped out of the vehicle. The younger one looked around hastily, "Where are they?" The other was searching around as well but wasn't as hyper as Devan. Collins patted his brother's back, "They'll be here. Chill bro, what's the rush?" He was being serious. What was his brother's deal? Devan turned to him sheepishly, "Sorry, I just want to get the day started.." Collins still did not believe him, but let it go.
"Hey boys!" The two turned around and saw a pair of twins walking over to them. Devan's heart skipped a beat as he laid his eyes on the one he was waiting to see, Vanessa Merrell. The young man had been keeping in his secret crush on her for a few months. He wasn't sure his feelings were for her until recently but chose to not speak about it because sadly, she had a boyfriend. His name was Harrison Webb. The dude was a good guy and Devan pushed his feelings away when they got together to prevent conflict, but now he can't contain his passion for Nessa. He had to get his feelings off his chest. He was going to tell her he—
His thoughts stopped once they were only a few feet from the girls. Veronica came and gave Collins a long hug, "Hey babe." He hugged her back, planted his lips on hers, "Hey." Vanessa smiled at the couple and Devan did as well. They were pretty cute pair he had to admit. Collins and Roni had been together for a while now and had gotten so close. Devan was so happy for his brother and hoped the two stayed together. Nessa commented with a smirk, "Vollins all the way!" The couple just blushed slightly still hanging onto each other. Devan turned to her, trying to hold back a cheesy grin, "Hey, Nessa." She giggled, fluffing the boy's hair with her fingers, "Hey, Dev."
Collins looked at the two and suggested, "Wanna get some ice cream?" They all agreed happily and started walking over to a shop a few blocks away. As they had discussions going, Collins and Veronica separated themselves from the other two, moving slightly ahead, interlocking their hands with one another. Vanessa just sighed watching them, "They are inseparable." Devan looked over at her as the sun shined across her face, enhancing her wondrous features. She was beautiful. He rubbed his neck, "Yeah, Collins always talks about her now at home."
"Haha, Roni does that all the time! Collins this, Collins that. Like, just go hang out together already!" The two laughed heartfully at the comment. Devan loved talking to Nessa, he loved being with Nessa.
Soon the crew reached the ice cream shop and ordered what they wanted, finding a table and sat down. They rested their bodies on the benches and spoke amongst each other. Later the group fell silent while Vollins were still having a conversation. Devan scooped up another bite of ice cream from his bowl, bringing it up to his mouth and slurping it up. Doing so, his eyes glanced up and saw Vanessa looking into nothingness, in deep thought with her head looking down. Without her noticing, Devan reached for his phone and took a picture of her sneakily.
As soon as he took the picture, Nessa looked up, locking her eyes with his icy blue ones. She made a confused but goofy look, "Did you just take a picture of me?" Devan felt himself grow nervous but kept it hidden, "I'm using you as my streaks for SnapChat." Good save, he thought to himself. The girl rolling her eyes with a giggle, "Don't post that, I look so bad right now!" He didn't look up at her but kept his attention on the picture in front of him, "No way, you look amazing." Hearing himself say that, he flushed as he sent the snap on his phone. Vanessa nudged him slightly in the arm, "Stop being such a suck up.." Devan laughed a little, "Whatever, don't believe me." Nessa let the air clear and felt herself question what he said. What he just being regular, sweet Devan? Probably. So she waved it out of her mind and began to lick her ice cream cone.
"Hey guys, Collins and I are gonna check out a shop around the corner, wanna come with?" Veronica asked as she started to stand up. Nessa shrugged slightly, looking at Devan for his opinion, "Wanna go?" The younger one thought for a moment. Maybe this is his chance to talk to Vanessa privately. So he answered, "Nah, besides I don't want to disrupt you two lovebirds." He winked at Collins who just blushed slightly. The older key brother just said to them, "Okay, we won't be too long, you guys."
Devan and Vanessa watched them take off, then put their attention on each other. It was silent as they sat there smiling. Nessa pressed her lips together, looking around awkwardly, "Soo..." Devan glanced down and back up towards her, with a laugh, "Soo..." The young boy felt something inside him yell, It's time!
He focused his eyes on Nessa, taking in her dark chocolate eyes, pursed lips, and long flowing hair skimming her arms. Letting himself breathe, Devan spoke after clearing his throat, "Hey, Nessa," she looked up at him with interest, "can I talk to you about something...something important?" Vanessa was curious yet a little worried, "Of course, anything, Dev. Is something wrong?" Devan gave a little nervous laugh, "No..no not at all."
Devan looked up slightly, a smile breaking across his face. Here it goes, "It's killing me, Nessa. It's killing me because I don't want you to go another day without knowing how I really feel about you," his hands were shaking from nerves. This was getting harder than he thought. Nessa's eyes began to grow wide, "How do you really feel about me?" The young boy bit his lip in fear that he wouldn't get the right words out, but he had to, "For the past few weeks I've been trying to figure it out. I've been trying to figure out why there isn't some other word to describe it. But, when I see you with Harrison...I-I just can't help wanting to be him. Spending endless nights just being with you, having you in my arms," Devan took her hands, his blood pressure rising, "I really like you, Vanessa."
She couldn't believe what she was hearing. Devan had feelings for her.. For how long? Why? Unsure what to do, Nessa pulled her hands from his hesitantly, "Devan...I care about you so much, but I'm with Harrison." She stuttered, her stomach churning as she saw the boy's expression change, "You're like a little brother to me, Dev. It won't work, I'm..I'm sorry." The young boy felt himself grow upset, but he couldn't give up just yet, "How do you know? You know I want you, I'm not hiding this secret anymore. J-Just think, we could be more than what we are, don't push the idea away just yet. I wouldn't be saying this...if I believed Harrison is yours. You're in my heart and mind everyday, Nessa. What if you could be my destiny?"  Vanessa looked sick to her stomach staring at Devan, her face turning white, "I can't be your destiny, Devan."
"Why can't you? Maybe we-."
"Harrison asked me to move in with him!" Devan pulled back when Nessa shouted at him. What did he just hear? Harrison wanted her to move in with him?! Vanessa realized she yelled and sighed to herself, "He asked me last week. I wasn't sure if I was going to say yes so I didn't tell anyone, but I like Harrison, a lot." Devan's heart began to shatter into a million pieces. Anger and pain smashed into him like a ton of bricks. He just confessed his love for her and she just trampled all over it..
His heart was beating faster, his body stiffened. Not sure what to do, Devan got up and backed away from his love. Heartbroken, he takes off sprinting in the opposite direction, not looking back. Nessa held her hand out to him, standing now, "DEVAN WAIT!!" She stared at him as he fled from the scene. The twin felt tears she was holding back flood out and she soon bursts out crying. Why did she say all that to him? Vanessa should've told him how she really felt; torn and confused.
I know you want me
It's not a secret you're trying to hide
But I can't have you
We're bound to break and
My hands are tied
Moments later, Collins and Veronica walked back from the store, laughing and leaning against each other. But soon their fluffy tune was silenced once they saw Vanessa, crying all alone at the table where they left her and Devan. Worried, the two ran over to Nessa in panic. Roni asked standing overtop of her sister, "Nessa? Nessa, what's wrong?" The other twin couldn't answer for a few seconds until she croaked out, "Me and Devan had a fight!" Collins sat down beside her and cautiously touched her arm, "Wait, why were you two fighting?" Vanessa tried calming down but couldn't, "I-I don't know if it's my place to say why..but I said something that hurt him and he ran off! I hurt him.." Roni felt her sister's pain and sat on the other side, wrapping her arms around her, "Come here..come here, Ness."
Reluctantly, Vanessa hugged her sister, crying into her shoulder. Collins felt awful for her. He couldn't imagine what got Devan so upset to leave. The oldest stood up, "I'm gonna go try to find Devan." Before he could race off to search for him, Nessa added still holding onto Roni, "I don't think you'll be able to, he's been gone for a while." The magician didn't seem fazed, "Don't worry, my bro wouldn't have gone that far." With that, he was off.
{Time Skip}
Collins had ran for about two minutes, began to pace walk for five, and now just sagged across the dirt road tiredly. Where was he?! Devan should've been around here somewhere, he thought. Collins closed his eyes with a sigh as he walked, but suddenly he heard a sniffle coming from beside him. The man opened his eyes and twisted his body around to see an oak tree. Curiously, Collins started to walk towards the back of the wooded plant to see Devan, curled up in a ball with his back against the stump and his head facing forward. His eyes were bloodshot and tear stains were evident across his cheeks.
Collins felt awful for his brother. Why was he so upset? Without a word, he sat down next to Devan, mimicking the same stance. Minutes go by of silence between the brothers. The older one broke the void and asked, "Vanessa said you two had a fight, and you ran off," he felt his brother stiffen, "She was crying. What's going on Devan?" The young boy sighed, rubbing his face, "..I-I told her...I had feelings for her. I said..I wanted her to be mine-," he stopped, wincing, forcing his tears away, "but she told me Harrison asked her to move in with him, and she might say yes."
The older brother was shocked. Devan had feelings for Vanessa?? And he didn't even know?? "You like Nessa? Why..didn't you tell me?" The other one avoided eye contact, "I didn't want to cause any conflict because she has a boyfriend," he groaned holding his legs together, "but it doesn't matter anymore. Vanessa made it clear her feelings towards me, an annoying twerp like brother."
Collins wasn't sure what to say. What would you do in a situation like this? The young man only sighed saying, "I'm sorry Devan. But everything will get better..soon." Devan felt the tears coming back against him, shredding up any of the manhood he had. He knew why she dissed him, because he was weak and childish. There was no hope for them. No matter how badly he wanted it, he couldn't rewrite the stars.
