"syrup?" hyeri asked while holding a bottle of maple-flavored goodness over renjun's small stack of pancakes. they made the mix together and hyeri cooked while renjun washed up.

he nodded. "just a little." and hyeri drew a quick, thin spiral of syrup over his pancakes before sliding the plate his way. she turned to her own plate, drowning the cakes next and tossing a handful of strawberries and blueberries on the top.

renjun blinked at her plate. "are you sure you're the one in a health club?"

"berries are healthy!" hyeri shot back in defense.

the two continued bickering slightly throughout breakfast, but they came together to wash and put their dishes away.

"wanna go see a movie today?" renjun asked as he put their clean plates back in the cabinet and softly closed the door. hyeri shrugged. "i don't know. is there anything good out right now?"

"no, but i saw an ad that couples who go today get free entry and a free small popcorn." he wiggled his brows mischievously, and hyeri fought the urge to cackle as she contemplated her early refusal.

"free entry and free food? i'll even kiss you to sell our 'relationship', renjunnie!"

he moved away before hyeri could get her grabby hands on him, laughing through screams as he ran through the little kitchen into the living room. hyeri giggled at his reaction and finished sorting their utensils before reaching for her phone to go through any missed notifications.

immediately, her smile faded into a scowl as he eyes rolled automatically at the name on her screen.

hyeri didn't realize she'd been grinding her teeth until she released some tension in her jaw and gasped, surprised by the ache.

"hyeri!" renjun called, clearly exasperated, as if he'd already called her name multiple times. he probably had, given how concentrated hyeri had been in her email replies to her vice president.

she snapped her attention away from her phone to find renjun glancing at her from behind the couch. "i'm bored," he sighed dramatically, and hyeri was happy to ditch her phone to hang out with her best friend for a few hours.

the two decided to shop for some faux couple outfits before they descended on the movie theater. determined to stay on a budget (especially with the reality that they had bills due in a few days), hyeri and renjun went to a tj-maxx close to campus.

they shopped around for a bit before settling on some cheesy black and red "i'm with stupid" and "i'm stupid" jumpers and light wash jeans. they giggled the whole way to the registers, ignoring the strange looks from the older man behind the counter, and hurried home to change in time before their movie.

since they were nearly the same size, renjun and hyeri argued about who had to wear the "i'm stupid" sweater.

"i think," renjun debated in a very matter-of-fact voice, "that you should be stupid since you're an honors student. it would be so much funnier!"

they'd already argued about the color, letter size, and sleeve length (the same for both jumpers), so for renjun to pull the "honors student" card, hyeri knew she was at a loss.

huffing, the girl grabbed the stupid sweater and pulled it over her bra. "fine. you win." she fought back a smile. "i guess it is funnier."

renjun pumped a fist in victory and grabbed her keys off the counter to toss them at her. "sweet! now let's go, honey!"

as expected, the plan was executed perfectly. the only strange looks they received were because of their matching sweaters, not the open hand holding pda or not-to-subtle touches and nudges. they were in their free seats five minutes before the film started, some musical hyeri didn't know, with their discounted snacks and drinks.

hyeri was reminded as she watched the movie to stop doubting her best friend. he knew her like the back of his hand, and even when she'd been a bit hesitant to spend the day out of the house, she was having a great time.

the movie ended with hyeri giving it 3 stars and renjun arguing that it deserved a 4.6, specifically.

it was drizzling outside when the two reached hyeri's car, but she didn't mind. she put her windshield wipers on the slowest setting and pulled onto the main road.

there was soft music playing from renjun's phone, and they didn't talk much about anything but the movie and their awesome disguises until hyeri felt renjun's curious stare on the side of her face and raised a questioning brow. "what?"

"i was just wondering," he asked slowly in an attempt not to sound nosy. "have you talked to haein recently?"

hyeri tensed a little at the sound of her cousin's name and tried to shrug it off. "no..."

of course, renjun had a reason for asking and immediately went on. "you know, haein dating jeno isn't the same as her dating jaemin. she could do a lot worse, considering."

what a little instigator... hyeri mentally scowled as she kept her eyes trained on the slick road ahead. "it still feels like a betrayal. those two are connected at the hip, which means haein is now one of them by association."

"oh, come on." renjun scoffed. "haein isn't turning to the dark side just because she caught feelings for jeno. and i guarantee she's not making life easy for that gojo-wannabe either."

despite herself, hyeri snickered. "that'd be funnier if i didn't hate him for ruining my life."

renjun smirked and looked out the dreary window. "you know, you can sound like a broken record sometimes, my beloved best friend."

"yeah." hyeri's grip loosened on the wheel as she slumped back into her seat. "you could say that again. make us a pair of records, instead."

"weirdo," he laughed without any real heat behind the word, the sound finally drawing a genuine laugh from hyeri. they changed the radio station until finding a song they could sing along to and screamed the lyrics until safely pulling into hyeri's dorm parking lot.
