PART ONE: THE GOOD DOCTOR. Chapter 1 - Too much Gravy.
"Let go of me." Amber heard Cecilia cry out from the other side of the door.
Amber yanked on the lock over and over but the hardwood structure maintained. She knew that every second she stayed locked in, was a second closer to death for the two in the other room.
Out of nowhere, the door flew open! She was thrown back and landed on the floor. There he stood, tall and angry. His eyes were dilated and out of focus. She shifted just in time to avoid a kick.
"Cecilia!" She ducked a blow. "Call Edmund!"
What had started off as a normal day had suddenly spiraled out of control. When she woke up that morning she had the slightest feeling that something was coming. Creeping up the horizon te reveal it's splendid glory. However, the only glory she beheld now was that of a mad man.
The man who was currently on a daze was her closest and oldest friend, Eric. A few weeks ago he came to her for help in kicking an addiction. It was an untested medical drug known as Tt-6.
Instead of weaning him off slowly, like a normal psychologist would recommend, she took him off all at once. Now three days later during dinner, he was suffering some homicidal withdrawal symptoms. Dr. Amber Brown wasn't phased however, the easy way was never any fun!
"I'm calling the police!" Cecilia cried, phone in hand.
"No! Call Edmund, he'll know what to do."
Eric was not in his wits and it seemed that every moment that passed, he became further removed. Every swing he made she easily missed.
"Cecilia!" Amber cried out impatiently for Eric's wife.
Just then, an aimless slap landed on Amber's jaw and sent her crashing into the leather chair. Eric was quickly on top of her. His hands did their best to choke her while she did her best to not get chocked.
"He says we give him a muscle relaxer." Cecilia's shaky voice entered the study. Amber could see the poor woman's petite frame shake.
"Well I don't see him swallowing any pills now!" Amber shouted amid trying to keep Eric's hands from her throat.
She took a lamp from the side table and sent it shattering over his head. The blow only afforded her enough time to dive for her bag.
"Could you keep him busy?" She asked Cecilia.
"How?"
"I don't know, you're his wife!"
Before she could finish, Cecilia was already in Eric's arms as the two wrestled on the floor. They rolled around the room. Dropping a sculpture here and a lamp there.
"Hey! I just bought that."
Amber's hands moved fast. She took out a syrange from one of her drawers and a bottle of Metho Carbon and filled it up to max.
"You guys have room for one more?" Amber said, to which Cecilia shot her a look of harsh reproach.
"Will you hurry up!"
She quickly sent the needle into Eric's fat neck. He began to spaz out from the slight overdose, frothed at the mouth a little then it was lights out. The two women fell together in Amber's study. Just then, John walked in.
"What happened in here?" He stood astonished at the mess in his house.
"Just your typical Sunday night dinner." Amber said still seated on the floor.
"Jesus! What's wrong with Eric?"
"Too much gravy." Was Cecilia's reply.

This was definitely not her usual spot. The room was smoky and hazy. Nestled in a corner where hardly anything could be seen save a broken ray of sunlight , sat the man she had come to see. The man who headed the asylum.
In the dark cigar bar, she made her way to the corner and took a seat. He was already halfway through a bottle of hot stuff. His dark skin made him glow in the man-made clouds.
"What'll you have? "
"Water is fine. " she said, looking around at all the men in suits. She coughed abit.
"I know this is no place for a lady. "
"It's no place for a man either. "
"I think John would come here. " he rasped.
"John, would be dead. "
"I know." the man laughed awkwardly.
Back came the waiter balancing a golden platter. He began to prepare Dr. Shepherd's drink then handed her the water she had requested. The waiter moved quickly and efficiently, fully aware that big decisions were made when men gathered to smoke. He gave her a curious eye before starting off.
Her stomach turned at the view of the man seated before her. His hands moved nervously as they rubbed against each other. From behind his thick glasses, his left eye twitched. She had never seen him like this.
"Are you okay? " she ventured after the waiter was out of ear shot.
"Of course, Dr. Brown. " he tried to smile but all together failed. She wasn't convinced but decided to move on.
"I was surprised when you asked me to meet you. "
"Has it been that long? "
"What do you need, Dr. Shepherd? " she had no time for small talk.
"I'm afraid to ask."
"I'm listening."
As he gave her his request, she wondered what John would say if he had been asked in her stead. She reckoned it would probably go something like,
"Ofcorse not! Are you bloody mad? My wife would do no such thing. Hunting for serial killers!"
Well she was bang on her money because that is what he said when he found out.
She tore from her thoughts and looked at Dr. Shepherd. His bald head gleaming in the afternoon blaze. His brown eyes were practically begging her to say yes. And that is what she did.
"I'll do it. "
