Chapter Two-The Way the Day Goes
The day began like any other (no, really this time).
My alarm starts singing at 6:30, and I turn it off to sit and check my emails and social medias.
Ooh a coupon for ground beef... And my favorite apples are on sale!
Time to get dressed; I pull an outfit from the clean laundry doom-pile on the floor and put it on. Going upstairs, I tell Ash to have a nice day at school, then head out the door myself.
I remember to grab my lunch from the fridge but forget my coffee cup on the counter. Typical.
Getting to work is usually easy, I don't live too far from the preschool. Sometimes construction gets in the way, but it doesn't normally slow me down too much.
I pull in, take a breath, then unbuckle and walk to the door to punch in my security code.
Opening the door, I'm greeted with shrieks varying in intelligibility.
"Miss Olivia!" The toddlers chorus.
"Good morning, friends," I respond warmly. And then the ThunderDome begins— Andy yanks Neveah's hair because Neveah has all the magnet tiles. Jordan cracks Miles across the face with the airplane in her hand by accident, but it's difficult to explain 'on purpose' versus 'an accident' to a child who's only 18 months.
Singing songs gets their attention, let's try that!
"Come on and clap-y your hands!
Turn around and touch the ground right where you stand!
Stomp-y your feet, snap your fingers once or twice because it's so neat!"
Well, now half of them are dancing, and the other half are sprinting in a close-quarters classroom.
Yep, there's the kid who trips and now she's bumped her head on a shelf.
Shoving down my "I told you so" is hard, so I tell her "that hurt, didn't it? You tripped because you were running inside, and we need to use our walking feet."
She nods with tears down her face and asks for a hug. After giving her one, she jumps up and starts running to her friend to tell him what happened.
Don't worry, she doesn't trip again, but I think (for a split second) about putting my foot out anyway.
Outside recess, lunchtime, then nap is a blur. After these comes snack, then the parents begin trickling in to pick up their children.
Only when enough kids have left out of my class can I finally begin cleaning my classroom and take out the trash. I fold my apron, grab my bags, and head to my car.
I drive home, and then Ash and I play jackbox like I've promised them.
All in all, a good day.
